“announcements” don’t even appear on the screens of people like myself who access these boards by “show new” unless we also happen to visit the individual forums and get exposed to their menus;
When the content of an “announcement” changes or is updated, we simply have no way to know about it unless another poster points it out.
I don’t know whether it’s even possible under vBulletin to post a “sticky” announcement visible to everyone no matter HOW they log in. If it IS possible - without too much recoding or expense - can we implement it?
You want an announcement to appear on every page, because you choose not to view the Forums directly?
Well…there is a solution, but AFAIK it involves coding. If you see how announcements are done on my site, they are shown on every single page, in the area at the top-right (to the right of the banner .GIF). The SDMB could do the same thing, but it involves some template changes. And, it’s no longer easy for the Staff to post announcements anymore, although someone smarter than me could likely figure out a way around that.
I used to just access the ‘new threads’ page, too, but especially with all the new forums, that meant that something that I might have been interested in from GD I’d miss it 'cause 18 post count parties were going on in MPSIMS etc.
So, at least once in a while I access an individual forum.
HOwever, that being said, the point about ‘update’ in the announcement was well made. I wouldn’t have known that Ed updated the last one had I not been haunting the applicable thread in the PIt.
Any way you can add a word to the title? like Update? then Update 2vB? etc?
reprise - One argument is that no longer how visible you make an announcement, some people will ignore it. And we try to minimize the amount of work we have to do, so having to put the announcements in more than one place would not be out first choice.
I recommend that everyone that frequents the SDMB should always make ATMB their first stop, and go to the forum list in ATMB to see if anything is new. And before you post a question in ATMB, read the FAQ another time (even if you just read them last week) to see if something has been added.
