You know, I’ve been thinking about it, and there’s too much about my country that I love to leave that remark out there. The American people aren’t responsible for this, the government is. The American people didn’t even vote for this assclown in the White House. I’m actually proud of the amount of dissent that there has been. I’m proud that so many Americans can see through this act of corruption for what it really is. I won’t let one bad president destroy my faith in America.
I amend my first post. I love my country but I’m ashamed, deeply ashamed of my government.
My country right or wrong.
My operating system, running or corrupted and crashed.
My clothing, clean or dirty.
I do my laundry at appropriate intervals, I rebuilt my Desktop and zap my PRAM now and then, and…
…I’m thinking I should do more than just vote?
::AHunter3 mulls possibility of running for office::
To paraphrase Lady McBeth—if this is to be done, let it be done quickly.
Amen, Dio.
Man, how do you make it through life? Were you ashamed and unhappy for most of a decade during Vietnam?
I was a little kid during Viet Nam, but my dad was over there, so mostly I just remember worrying about him and wondering when he would come home. I wasn’t poltical yet. My dad was actually against the war in Viet Nam, but was ROTC in college and chose to serve a commission as an officer. My dad is against this war too.
huh… I guess I’m not an American then.:dubious:
I fully agree with DtC, but now we must support the troops, now is not the time for more anti-war movements. Now is not the time to be stopping traffic. All these war protesters are is proving how childish they will act when they lose their debate.
Especially when they keep eschewing their rhetoric, “Over half of Americans are against war.” Umm no. Have you seen the latest polls, over 65% of Americans support the war.
Do you have a right to voice disgust? Yes. Does that mean you have a right to disrupt other people’s lives? No. Now that war is inevitable, who knows…
Alien2022, I fail to see how stopping traffic in the States is going to hurt the troops in Baghdad. It may be an irritant and a nuisance to us civilians but it doesn’t hurt the troops. I don’t want to squelch any dissent back here.
(in case anybody is wondering, I am not a participant in any of these public anti-war protests. I limit my protesting to posting on message boards, writing to newspapers and yelling at my television)
“Great is the guilt of an unnecessary war.” - John Adams
Let’s at least hope it’s over quick.
I’m with you. I was against the war, but now that it’s going on, let’s all hope it’s over quickly. And let’s hope that a new government is put into place quickly and that USA has the brains to pull the hell out of there afterwards.
That’s just the problem. We can’t pull out quickly. Some of those troops are going to have to be there for a long, long time.
Alien: “but now we must support the troops, now is not the time for more anti-war movements.”
These are not mutually exclusive pursuits. We can support our troops as we partake in anti-war movements.
Does this “war” seem a little ham-fisted so far?
What happended to the “awe” we were supposed to experience when it began?
Heres hoping it hasn’t really started yet.
I slept last night. When I awoke this morning I saw that:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. official said on Thursday the United States was drawing “no conclusions” as to the authenticity of a defiant speech by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein following the launch of war against Iraq.
Is there some reason to think that the speech would’ve been faked?
Alien, I have some sympathy for your position. There are no good choices, all the good choices have been tossed into the dumpster.
But this is precisely the reaction the Bushistas are banking on. Its is thier fondest hope to squelch dissent by wrapping themselves in the flag at every opportunity. You’ll not see them at any time without some maudlin and mawkish reference to thier support for “our troops”. They will be quite content to have us who dissent be silenced, while they lavishly praise Our Leader, to concoct an utterly false image of universal support.
You ask Dio if he was ashamed of his country for ten years of Viet Nam, and he was not of an age. Well, I was, and yes, I was ashmamed for ten years. And an ugly ten years it was, too. They tried the same crapola then. To this day, there are still people who lay out the tired old lie about returning soldiers being spit upon by shrill and hairy peaceniks.
Now there is no choice. I have no option but to pray that it is the Iraqi soldiers who suffer and die, thiers, the widows and orphans, thiers, the armless and legless men cast into the streets to beg for bread. Thiers, and not ours.
But I will not forgive the men who forced this upon me. And I will not permit them to forget. To suggest that my dissent somehow undermines a soldier’s committment to his duty is to dishonor my intentions and his/her intelligence. But even if it were so, our fear of being misunderstood is not, must not, be sufficient to silence us. We have our duty as well.
It would appear, as regards the Viet Nam era, that those who will not learn from history are doomed to make the rest of us repeat it.
The AP and Fox are reporting that Iraq has fired at least one Scud at our Marines and 2 other rockets (perhaps surface to surface). Mmm.
Saddam said he had none of the above.
Nevertheless, I, too tremble at this moment. I fear for our troops and for the innocent Iraqis. I fear for our country.
I cannot think of a more vile and dangerous idea that once a government starts war you have to stop protesting it. Hauling out the “supporting the troops” chestnut is a dictionary-quality example of a strawman, one I’m sure we will be seeing a lot the next weeks. One can protest the war without denying support to the troops.
My SO is a veteran. Several members of my family are veterans. I support troops. I support PEOPLE.
I’m against bad ideas.
