I’ll recognize it with the rational solemnity it should be recognized with; I hate grandstanding. I never watch TV news any more, but even so I’m trying to be extra careful of seeing even the smallest snippets of any media coverage of the day, especially the most dreaded cliche: Hearing soundbites of ‘Taps’ being played with a media’s talking head’s frenetic voice-over, as the camera shows a clip of people in a cemetery while old glory billows in the wind.
Unseasonably hot and humid. Too hot to even cook out. Got all my work done the past 2 days, I’m going to “veg out” in the air conditioning.
Howdy Y’all! We had quality cee-mint pond time and et a late N.O.L./early Sup of hot dawgs 'n fixin’s. I hauled the biiiiiiiiiiiiiiig trash can all the way down to the road for pickup tomorrow. Now 'tis chill in the a/c time. It’s HAWT HAWT HAWT outside!
OYKW had an uncle (one he never knew, of course) who died when the plane he was on (he served as a bombardier) was shot down over Germany in WW2. To the best of my knowledge I have no relatives who have been killed in war.
When you walk out my back door, you get hit in the face with the scent of honeysuckle.
When you walk out the front door, you get hit in the head with pieces of bird’s nest.
Two bird’s nests above the door, and when you open the storm door it breaks off little pieces.
We are planting the flowers in shifts.
Today we planted lavender, foxglove, and delphinium.
We still have shasta daisies, salvia, ornamental lily, and whatever the orange flowers are to plant.
There was no rhyme or reason to what I bought. It was just, you look pretty and you are a perennial, you will do.
The wild flowers are coming up, but nothing is blooming yet.
I finished off the ham for dinner, still hungry though, so I might make myself a hamburger later. Made tacos for my son.
Trash has to go out tonight.
I still need to order groceries.
Laundry is caught up except it still has to be put away.
I never did devil the eggs.
I told Ripple we will stop going to the dog park if all he is going to do is stand around, he can do that at home.
Over the years of doing genealogy on and off, I discovered that my great grandmother’s two great uncles served with Rosencrans’ Army of the Cumberland and were killed during the Battle of Stones River (aka the Second Battle of Murfreesboro) and buries in the National cemetery there. I found this out after I moved to middle Tennessee from Indiana. I go over a couple of times a year to pay respects and reflect.
On the way home, I stopped at Staples. they didn’t have my connector, given that it fits a custom graphics card. It’s doubtful that anyone really makes them anymore. I will call the little shop that has worked on my desktop tomorrow and see if he has at least some screws that fit it. Right now, I’ve hacked it so’s I have a monitor. The new printer is hooped up and prints, copies and scans well, I have a buyer for the fancy schmancy one without even putting it on CL. My friend is far more techy than I am and wants it for $125.
Supper tonight is turkey tamale casserole (Ole! to borrow from swampy) and steamed vegetation.
My sister, my mother and I drove to three cemeteries with family graves. One is my maternal grandmothers paternal grandfather, in other words my great-great grandfather. He was a POW at Andersonville during the American Civil War. He told his granddaughter, my grandma, that off and on, ever since, he had had stomach trouble, due to abuse by the guards, and by bad food.
One couple, childless, were related to my grandmother, and when she was a toddler, about three years old, they kept her at their house for a while, since her mother was busy helping take care of people during a diptheria epidemic. They spoiled her, which grandma still remembered, and actually offered to adopt her. That did not go over well so my great grandmother brought her daughter home.
The weather was warm and muggy but not raining. I hear that we will get more rain tonight though. NE Kansas is having real problems.
Evening all. My family is pretty much buried 600 Miles north of here, so I don’t get up to see them much. So let nappage become sleeppage this afternoon and then went to the Texas Roadhouse for a steak dinner (was a good one).
FCM, I actually did walk out to the mailbox and open it, then thought “well, that’s stupid.”
Sari, you are amazing in that you can make the mudane things of life so interesting. Thank you.
Butters, hope the Doc talked some sense into husband-unit about the hand…he’s risking serious infection/loss of hand due to the 'it happens to other people, not me" syndrome.
All my relatives survived serving in combat, physically anyways. Mentally it’s a tossup between combat, and having the family’s DNA.
I did miss the VFW flag retirement ceremony this weekend. I figure showing up for that, and donating to the Post means more than conspicuous consumption on the “support our troops” front
Butters, hope the hubby listens to the docs. Or likes the idea of the nickname “Lefty”
I decided I’d plant the poppy seedlings in front of the house between the two sequoia (?) trees. To do that, I had to weed. I was sitting on a folding step-stool like this one when Mrs. L.A. returned from an errand. She said, ‘How do you sit like that?’ I was just sitting on the top step, between the risers. She continued, ‘I have to sit on it crossways. I told you you have a skinny ass!’
Anyway, I finished the weeding after a salad break. I don’t know when I’ll transplant the seedlings.
I started out the day thinking of all the people who’ve died in combat and how sorry I am that war cut their lives short.
I went to a BBQ today (or I guess it’s yesterday now), but it wasn’t for Memorial Day. It was a friend’s dogs birthday. I helped make dog-friendly mini-cupcakes, which the pups loved. So much fun to see the 7 dogs romping and chasing each other. They had a wonderful time. So did I. There were mimosas, and I was thirsty. Turned out they were very strong mimosas. Whoa, Nellie! 'Twas but a short stagger home.
Hubby couldn’t get the had sewn up so he has instructions to try not to use it too much. The infection is cleared up which is a blessing in and of itself. The Dr. seems to think it will eventually get well if he stops using and abusing it so much. I just gave him another lecture about it so we shall see.
Back to the old grindstone today. I don’t wanna go. I have been awake since about 4 am since I went to bed so early. Tis gonna be a long day.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 73 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 96 and mostly N.O.S. for the day. I shall do laundry and spiff da cave a bit today. Also at some point I will head over to the church house. A mower died (lost a belt) and the folks at the mower horsepistol are supposed to pick it up this mornin’ at some point. They will call me so I can meet them there. They want somebody to sign a form when they pick it up which I suppose is a good thing. Sup shall be tacos (OLÈ!) and fixin’s.
Now I need more caffeine and rumbly tummy demands sustenance. Then, onward into the day. Rah.
No Memorial Day here, but last weekend was the RANA, which aside from meaning FROG is the Reunión Anual de Navarra y Aragón: alternating organizers every year, Mensa Aragón and Mensa Navarra organize a weekend get-together. This year’s was next door to a large botanic garden, Bertiz; I was able to join the group on Saturday for a trip around Baztán which included visiting the ruins of the castle of Maya or Amalur (same village, Spanish/Basque). The castle is where the last fight by a Navarrese Army took place, in 1522. After that, our southern part was owned by Emperor Charles V and his descendants; the northern part absorbed France (but politely kept the name “France”) at the end of the century. Two of the guys who defended Amalur were the elder brothers of the guy we call the Universal Navarrese on account of being the one guy from around here that pretty much everybody has heard about, a Francisco Jasso aka Xavier.

I was going to sleep with Mel last night, but I forgot. Not that it mattered - I was unconscious before 9. I woke a bit after midnight with a coughing fit, so I took a shot of nyquil, and went unconscious again till nearly 6. Yay!
On the other hand, it was a messy shot. I didn’t want to turn on the light when I poured it, so I over-poured a bit, and the nasty, dark red liquid spill was obvious, even by night-light. I used a small cup of water to rinse it. Or so I thought. This morning, I saw dark pink-ish spots all over the sink and the adjacent wall! I bet there are spots on my sleep shirt. too! But it’s all cleaned up now.
Today’s plans include a trek to WalMart and Kohl’s with Roxy. I need on skein of white yarn to finish an afghan for AARP, and I want to try on some of my favorite jeans at Kohl’s to see if they fit yet. It’s going to be interesting, trying on jeans with the baby there. I hope the changing room doors go all the way to the floor…
Last night, I helped **FCD **install the door to the kids’ “living room” downstairs - it’s a weird installation because of the low ceiling and the location of the ventilation ducts, but it doesn’t look bad, all things considered. Daughter was painting down there after we got done - I need to check it out.
Morning all. The long nap yesterday afternoon equalled waking up before 6am today. I’ll try to avoid being horizontal during the afternoon and get a regular night’s sleep this evening. Out of clean underwear so laundry is also on my list today.
Nava, sometimes we here in the USA forget there is history others have that pre-dates the entire USA. Hope it was a good weekend for you.
reporter, sounds like a good party, and at least you had the sense to do it in staggering distance.
LA John, be thankful for a skinny butt; mine is the direct opposite of skinny and finding comfortable places to park it can be a chore at times (especially during chores…)
FCM, even if the light was on, there would be a mess. I think it’s something in the Nyquil receipe that allows the smallest drop to make a stain somewhere.
Back from erranding. I got what I needed at WalMart, tho the packing tape dispenser was missing its cutting edge - dammit! I sent an email off to the manufacturer - we shall see what happens. Meanwhile, I’ll have to use scissors.
Then we went to Kohl’s so I could try on a pair of my favorite jeans in what I hope is my new size. Except they didn’t have any in that size. Dammit.
Memorial Day in Chicagoland featured a Super Cell that carried with it strong front line winds, a tornado, damaging hail, and torrential flooding rains. The sirens went off in my community around 2:30, I believe.
The Deep Tunnel, which can handle 2.6 billion gallons of water, was at capacity. I have friends who had 3 feet of water in their basements. The large, electronic marquee sign in front of our main office entrance was ripped away and sent I know not where. All that is left is the support structure and some hanging cables.
For a nation obsessed with laicité, the French sure love finding holidays to celebrate. Next Thursday we’re off because it’s the Feast of the Ascension; I’ve got plans to go to an antiquities show nearby. The show will go on all weekend, but on Friday I’m taking my car to the garage because its makers have issued a general “bring your cars to one of our garages to be checked before the sky falls down!!!” warning. I got the warning in Spain (courtesy of the Ministry of the Interior - the letter didn’t even say Transportation, it directly said MotI) but not only is it also possible to do it in France once the receptionist and I were able to find all the data she needed in my Spanish paperwork, but the campaign even has the same code.
On Thursday I heard the Director of Spain’s Transportation Department talk about a EU-wide road sign system which was officially being adopted one of these days. Now if we can come up with a EU-wide version of Vehicle Papers which doesn’t seem to be in Kree, please?
I think people who see having their own traffic signs, power plugs and so forth as a sign of sovereignity should stop using any items they own that charge through a USB cable. That would teach the rest of us!
