It's time for my yearly Tuba Diva bashing again...

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=201599

It seems that TubaDiva has a really, really hard time with sick humor. I guess there are some people that do - though I’m not sure the net is a good place for them, as in the last ten years of my experience on it, the place can get pretty free-wheeling. And I think that’s a good thing, frankly. But anyway…

I have, in the past, expressed my disgust and diapproval for TubaDiva’s actions, even though I would tend to agree with them myself. Last time she got all worked up over a tasteless joke (do a search on “llamasex rape”) I stomped off in a huff. This time I figure they’ll have to ban me if they dislike me talking about why I think she’s over-reacting - and wildly.

Hell, why am I trying to sugarcoat this. Let’s get brutally honest here:

In my considered opinion, TubaDiva is a goose-stepping fascist with no sense of humor, and a tolerance for differences of opinion that it would be chairitable to call “fair weather.”

I would also like to take a cheap shot here, and say that by all apearances it happens to be “that time of month” for her. (Was that tasteless? Yes, I believe it was…)
Now, as for the follow-up post by Sr. Zotti…

Looks like it’s time for another rule. If we read anything that in our opinion is too appalling to see the light of day, we’ll close it immediately.

Fair enough. It’s your message board, and you get to control the content here. I disagree with your particular tastes, but hell, I’m free to set up my own web board if I don’t like it.

  • Persons posting such stuff are subject to having their posting privileges revoked.*

That’s a bit draconian, don’t you think? What if they didn’t know they crossed the line? I understand that you think your standards are very clear and precise, but unless you write them down or give some kind of guideline, that line between acceptable and unacceptable can be very thin. Depending perhaps on nothing more than the mood of the mod at the moment s/he sees the posting. Is that really how you want to run things?

  • Please don’t ask us to define what is and isn’t revolting - we’ll know it when we see it.*

Oh, my bad! Indeed, I AM supposed to read your mind, and just automatically know what’s acceptable or not, even though you’ve never told me, and apparently can’t even define it yourself. Thanks for that clarification. Nice to know that “arbitrary/whatever we feel like” is the stated policy here at the SDMB.

Well, again, “your board, your rules.” But I’m afraid I’m not going to give you any points for attempting to make your own or anyone else’s life easy by having clear, consistent standards for… well, anything apparently.

If you’ve read the SDMB for any length of time, you know we’re pretty tolerant, but even we have limits.

Having limits is not the problem. Telling people "don’t do bad things, or else, and by the way we’re not going to tell you what “bad things” are!"is the problem. Let me say this flat out: you’re being unreasonable. And again, while it’s your board and you certainly have the right to be completely and totally unreasonable, I would expect a reasonably intelligent person would not act that way. (Which I find ironic, as this board is ostensibly about fighting ignorance and fostering intelligence…)

I have to agree. I didn’t think the thread was so unquestionably revolting that it needed immediate closure and disciplinary action. It was a pretty cruddy joke, but was it really that much worse than anything else in the Pit?

Yearly?

When you’ve only been registered for a few months?

I agree that the thread was revolting and in bad taste, but “we know it when we see it” isn’t exactly strong leadership.

Ha ha Mikey, you’ve really stepped in it now. Just you wait.

Believe me, I know firsthand that while you can fight ignorance, you can’t fight fascism. Better to join us instead. Assimilate yourself into the Uber-Mind of the Great And Holy SDMB. ONE OF US! ONE OF US! ONE OF US!

(Hey! What was in that powder I stirred into my morning coffee…)

I think they are just saying use common sense.

Honestly, no one else’s skin crawled when they read that? If you think something you are about to say is that obnoxious, maybe you shouldn’t post it here.

Kindly define “unreasonable”. Precisely, please. Given this quote, you must be able so to do.

The joke was simply not funny, and it was in extremely poor taste. Anal Scurvy even posted that the “joke” lacked something outside of an exchange between his girlfriend and himself, and apologized to the board as a whole.

Personally, I was not offended by it, but I can totally understand where many would consider it extremely offensive. Abortion is a very touchy subject. It is not a joking matter, and the post in question made light of it. That’s probably what turned off Tuba Diva.

I’m siding with Tuba Diva, if only on the grounds that if Anal Scurvy and his girlfriend find this type of material funny, that’s fine, we all have different tastes. It does not belong on a public message board, however.

The bolding of “unreasonable” in my last post was my emphasis of course.

The definition for bad taste “humour” isn’t well-defined, no.

Neither is the term “pillock”. I think most of us here know one of them when we see one.

TubaDiva isn’t the only one having a hard time with “sick humour”. Sounds like you’re having a hard time not sounding like an over-inflated twit, though.

That’s a pretty dumbass rule, but not the most important arbitrary “we’ll know it when we see it” rule around here. Don’t be a jerk is. That’s also a dumbass rule, by the way.

What Mockingbird said.

I don’t agree. I think the forum was part of the problem, it wasn’t in the pit, it was in MPSIMS. And what disciplinary action? ‘You’ve been warned’? Get over it.

Nothing to see here, move along.

Ed Zotti’s definition of “sick humor” sounds a bit like that Senator’s definition of porn.

“I can’t define it, but I know it when I see it.”

Dear Mike, having done your search as requested, I would like to refer you to the following, contained in the registration agreement

I’m just curious whether or not the administration is aware of your name change, is all.

If you think that’s bad, you should see the board I left to come here. The SDMB is the biggest breath of fresh air. . .

Be glad that, if there had been a word filter here and you had written the name Di.ck Van Dy.ke so the words would show up and people would know what you meant, you would not be edited and admonished for “fooling the word filter.”

Seems the OP has more posts under this name than he did for the whole time he posted as ‘llamasex’.

Well. That’s just not right.

You have a grand total of 142 SDMB posts under your belt at this point, and yet you feel qualified to call Ed Zottie and Tuba Diva goose stepping retards because their sense of humor is insufficeintly capacious to make room for a little jesting about inducing abortion in a pregnant girlfriend by beating the fetus to death?

How old are you 13, 14?

MikeRochenelle concluded

So, let me be sure I have this right: Restricting jokes about punching a pregnant woman with the intent of killing her fetus is detrimental to fighting ignorance and fostering intelligence how?

I thought the joke was funny, and it was quite obvious it was a joke.

Too bad some people can’t just let other people enjoy their gallows and morbid humor in peace.
