iTunes skipping

The future! The age of digital everything, and especially music. And having all that music digitally stored means no more skipping, like you would have on a CD player. Right?

Wrong.
So the other day, I finally update my iTunes to version 7.0. I’m running Windows XP and the old version worked just fine for me. Yesterday, though, the music starts to skip and stutter as I’m playing it, no matter what I’m doing. I have just iTunes open and it still shudders like a CD you used as a frisbee once.

At first I thought it was a speakers problem. Nope, those are fine, and audio sounds fine from everywhere else. Then, I thought it might be because I’d just downloaded myTunes. Nope, uninstalled it, and still nothing. Turned off the sharing feature in iTunes. Nothing.

Any suggestions? I’ve Googled and come up with the “change your Quicktime setting” option, but that didn’t work either.

This has been a commonly-reported problem with the new iTunes 7.0. An update is expected soon. I have this problem on my Windows machine but not on my Mac.

Wow! I had an iTunes question & I was wondering whether GQ or CS were the right place- so I’ll piggyback onto this.

A friend is using the iTunes which came with her iPod (60 gb Video), but when she puts music from her CDs into it, the beginning of one song overlaps with the end of the one previous to it (OR the end of one song overlaps into the beginning of the one following it). She just got her computer serviced, thinking the Disc drive might have been at fault, but it still happens. Any ideas what to do?

Yes, I am checking the iTunes site also but I was hoping for some personal experience here, thanks!

That’s a tweakable feature called Crossfade.

And why the Apple designers chose to have it on by default I’ll never know. It’s damned annoying until you figure out how to turn it off.

I had this problem on my wife’s computer, and it seemed to be helped by going to the options (I think it was under advanced, I could be wrong), and increasing the buffer size from “Medium” to “Large.”

Well, that’s just prime. Thanks for the info. Now I need to go have “words” with the person who convinced me it was a great idea to update right now.

:: bump ::

Does the skipping still happen if you use iTunes to burn CDs, rather than just listening through the speakers? I’d rather not waste CDs if I don’t have to.

An updated version of iTunes is finally available for download. I just installed it and so far it’s working well - no skipping so far.
