At least for the time being. I found her running across 6 lanes of traffic on a busy street. Put up fliers in area where I found her, and have ad in local paper and craig’s list, have gotten a few calls, but mostly offers to take her if the owner isn’t found.
We will most likely keep her as she is working her evil puppy charm on me and Kevbabe.
Please speculate on her parentage: I’m thinking maybe Schnauzer and Sheltie? Or maybe this is a recognized breed? Pretty much a dead ringer for Benji from the 70’s Disney (IIRC) movie.
She still had 4 milk teeth when I found her, which she has lost over the last couple of days. She’s most definatly teething, so I think that means 6 +/- mos.
Still VERY MUCH the puppy. She’s become quite mischevious as she has gotten more comfortable around us.
No issues with the dustmop comments. I’m fortunate to be able to bring her to work with me (not in the long term though). Yesterday the cleaning lady was here and was mopping the floor. The puppy was trying to get the mop to play with her, so she’d probably agree with the sentiment.
After about four weeks of becoming attached, the owners called me last night.
We’ll probably be keeping her anyway.
She belonged to an 8 yr. old little girl…sort of. Og, how I hate drama:
Mom and dad are estranged. Mom and girl are living in friend’s apartment. Dad brings little girl puppy. Of course little girl loves puppy, but puppy can’t stay at apartment. Puppy is kept at grandfathers place, who hates dogs. Grandfather gets angry at puppy and throws her over fence to fend for herself. Twice in a week. (they found her the first time he did it).
Dad first called me (from alcohol rehab) and it sounded like I would be giving the puppy up. So I called mom to get directions, and got “the rest of the story”. No they really can’t care for the dog, and would I please keep her untill she has a place, which will be like a year, as initially she will only have an apartment.
Well, no, I don’t want to do that. We are attached after a few weeks, and no freakin’ way are we going to want to give her up after a year.
Mom understands. Agrees to convince little girl that a good home is the best thing for the puppy. Agrees to allow me to put that in writing and give up any future claim to the dog.
With all this drama, I’m real glad these folks don’t know where I live…especially the dad who is probably feeling like I’m stealing his little girl’s puppy dog.
Poor kid. Her dad ought to be kicked for getting the kid a puppy when the family had no way of caring for it. What an idiot! “Here, kid. I got you something that you’re immediately going to fall in love with, but, aw shucks, looks like you can’t keep it. We’ll give it to someone else to take care of. How about your grandpa? I hear he hates dogs.”
What blows my mind is that after the first time Gramps threw the puppy over a fence to fend for itself,* they brought it back to him!*
Thank goodness the puppy ended up being found by you. You’re good people, Kevbo.
As thee owner of a once-abandoned pup (a vet [thankfully] found an entire litter on a streetcorner), I despise people who think dogs are cheap/easy/etc, and then can’t take care of them.
What a cutie. I’m sure it’s best for all involved for you guys to keep him - good luck.
Kevbo, thank you for saving that gorgeous little sweetheart from what would have been a horrendous life.
I agree, NinjaChick, the father needs a reality check on how to be responsible. I’m so utterly relieved that this story has a happy ending, when a lot of the time, people who have no idea how to take care of a dog end up ruining one’s life.
I’m so glad you managed to talk them into letting you keep the pup, it’s such an adorable little scrap.
My friend has just been to visit a local cat breeder (she runs the cattery we both use) who has a litter of Maine Coons. Oh, that’s so wicked. She has already picked her kitten from the litter, and has offered to take me over with her when she visits as they won’t be ready to leave the mother cat for another 3-4 weeks, but she wants some pics while they’re still at the impossibly cute stage.
So we’ll be off to see the kitties soon, and she knows fine well that I’ll want the only one left in the litter without a home. A little silver girl with red flashes. Oh, she knows…and they’re being sold at just below market value too…so if i postpone replacing my bathroom suite, I could have a kitten.
I need to unload the digicam. The neighborhood where I found her is called Princess Jean, so that is her name: PJ. We have two other dogs, my termally ill lab that is doing the energizer bunny impersonation, and a lab/chow (?) cross (also a foundling) named Sheba…actually Queen Sheba, so we now have a Queen and a Princess.
PJ’s having a rough patch this week. I think she just over played after taking a big drink and got a case of stomach cramp that has her whole GI tract in an uproar. I gave her a little kibble mixed with yogurt and some pumpkin, a while ago which seems to be staying down.
I understand that parvo #2 is really stinky, and that is not the case, so that’s a good sign. She also seems able to keep water down, so not getting dehydrated. She had the first of here shots a couple weeks ago, which included something for parvo. Not sure how long that takes to offer protection (incubation period for parvo).
