I would think that the fact that he came in here unprovoked, insulted me from out of nowhere, and (deliberately, IMO) tried to paint me in a dishonest light would be sufficient justification for the way I responded to him. You’ll notice however, that I didn’t suggest his kid would be better off without him in his life, or suggest that the authorities keep an eye on him when he’s on the road because he might be drunk, or that the police should be notified of his attempts to encourage various and sundry Dopers to meet up with him for a rousing bout of fisticuff.
Therein lies the difference, IMO, between acceptable insults by way of fighting back against a deliberate, unprovoked, devious attempt to portray me as a (and I have to roll my eyes as I say this) ‘homophobe’, and as a result, an ‘asshole’ ever since. Think I’ll go shower now. These threads are illustrative; they let me know which posters are capable of reasoned thinking and which seem to be unable to muster intelligent thought or argument. Generally, someone who thinks that vicious invective and abuse hurled at people is acceptable communication is not someone I’m interested in knowing and not someone whose opinions I can respect. So seeing how some people responded in this thread has been much quicker and more accurate than checking post counts and reading others’ reactions to posters to figure out whose posts might be worth reading.
