I was blissfully unaware of this whole fooferaw until it began taking up about half the first page of the Pit. So I opened one of the threads, which linked to another, which linked to yet another…
When I saw what the general subject matter was, I realized straightaway that there was nothing useful I could have said either way, so I didn’t. Trainwrecks being trainwrecks, however, I kept on reading far past the point where anything new or original was being said. In the end, I think I can truthfully say that I completely wasted my time. And now, I guess, I’ve wasted a bit of yours.
Problem is that it went far beyond ‘criticism’ and to call what was there and has been in other such recent threads ‘criticism’ or ‘just voicing my opinion’ is ludicrous. It was balls-out, vicious, hate-filled vituperation.
I agree, Polycarp, but I don’t think there’s an issue with criticizing the folks who take their criticisms way, waaaaay over the top. Unless in so doing, the criticizer utilizes the same amount of venom. So, perhaps, Auto,
might be a petard upon you now find yourself hoisted.
Watching the train wrecks (there have for sure been more than just the one of the last two days) is spooky - people get horrible, vicious, scary-mean. I can’t help but picture a mob scene in which people keep hurling stones with all their might - not content the victim is wounded and bleeding, they want the individual crushed to a pulp.
I can’t imagine where people manage to find that much venom in themselves to muster that much hate - on a frippin’ message board! It’s distressing and depressing. And yes, Giraffe, I know people are people, even here. That’s what’s depressing.

Here’s a suggestion, dude: next time you get an idea for a post, hold off for a bit before posting it. Go make a snack, watch some porn, take a nap, read the newspaper, look at some YouTube videos, go to bed, come back three days later and then see if you still really want to post it.
If you still do, then cool - it’s probably going to be a good’n. But if you don’t allow for any time between thought-keyboard-submit, well that is when people start wanting to beat you about the head.

Autolycus, my poodle. You know I think you’re the bee’s knees, but lately you’ve been sort of…Junior Mod-y. It’s kind of annoying. I don’t want to ignore you, 'cus lots of times you say really funny shit. But the whole “This board would be way better if you guys would just listen to meeeee” thing has kind of lost it’s charm. You’re not the only person doing this lately, but you’re certainly the most fun, so I think it would be swell if you would just cut it out.

I don’t agree with Starving Artist regarding politics, but he’s far from ignorant and he does have a point. I like to consider myself to be tolerant and open minded, and I was just as guilty as everyone else for flying off the handle.
He was the first one that pointed out that she probably had emotional problems and to go a little easy on her. He was probably right.

When dealing with addicts/alcoholics, one must be careful not to shield them from the consequences of their own actions. Having to deal with the reality created by what they’ve done is generally one of the most therapeutic actions such people can take.
While the vituperation coming from some corners was, in my opinion, so extreme that it reflected more on the person posting than on the postee, I also noted lots of wise and loving counsel offered up.

Oh come on. There are some very witty Pit threads with creative insults. They are about strangers or about family or about inanimate objects or about bureaucracies. However when it comes to directly Pitting a fellow Doper, one would (at least I would) hope that ‘reasonable’ would not have to be imposed from on high. I am just not buying that the worst of human behaviour ought be tolerated just because it’s the Pit.
