By the way, there are about a kabillion other members of the board who have not given a damn about this current pile of threads (either largely unaware or totally apathetic to the drama), who have been posting instead about, oh, cabinetry and Mozart and gardening and red shift and the female orgasm and tarantulas and such. 30 individuals on this current obsession doesn’t completely define the character of this board, any more than the 15 participants on either side of the great SDMB atheist wars do. A limited number of jackals, and I suspect the jackals du jour vary in rotation. Just for, you know, perspective.

I just spent the better part of an hour composing a point by point response to your thoughtful and eloquently worded post, and danged if my computer/browser/whatever didn’t freeze just as I was working on the final paragraph. I couldn’t copy, couldn’t paste, couldn’t capture a screen shot, nothin’. I had to restart my computer and now it’s too late and I’m too tired to try to reconstruct it. Let me just say that many of your points are well taken and that I agree very much with you in the main. However, I would say that it’s more difficult to forgive (although certainly possible) when posters are being deliberately and viciously hurtful on a level aimed at another poster’s psyche. Insults and criticisms of this type can truly traumatize someone and have negative effects on their lives that continue to reverberate long after thread and/or poster in question has been long forgotten.
Qadgop, I appreciate what you’re saying about troubled people needing to confront and deal with the consequences of their actions. What I’m objecting to is vile, hurtful insults, and wishes being expressed to the effect of other posters wanting to see that person’s life and self-esteem virtually destroyed, i.e., the “I hope your husband finds out, you lose your job and your kids, that you become the laughingstock of your town and that you’ll be banished from humanity for all time, you lazy, conniving, cheating worthless, rotten, no-good, lying two-faced bitch!” type of post, which was plentiful in the other two threads.

You are quite right, of course. However, those people won’t see the generalizations the OP and I are so carelessly flinging about so it’s pretty much a wash wouldn’t you say.
But kidding aside, you are quite right. I tend to spend most of my time in the Pit and the people who post there have more or less come to represent the Dope to me. It’s easy to lose sight of that fact and to lose perspective along with it. Thank you for the splash of cold water in the face. I needed it.

I wish people were capable of understanding degrees. Some pittings go way, way, waaaayyyyyyyy over the top. Doesn’t mean all do. Doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy a well-written Pitting. But the narsty vicious ones are, IMHO, unnecessary.
But I guess some people just can’t conceive of any area between ‘black’ and ‘white’.

I think some of us can’t conceive of why you think you’re the arbiter of which pittings go way over the top, being that
A) you’re pretty new
B) you’re not a mod of any description
C) people who’ve been her much longer than you have indicated that you’re incorrect.
