Jan. 25 1994

I just recently noticed that when someone has an external link near the beginning of a thread, in the mouseover preview of that thread I’ll see “JAN. 25 1994” in tiny letters, twice.

What gives? I’m using Firefox, I’ve run spybot and adaware. This is weird.

It’s odd, all right. I’m using Firefox 0.9, and on the mouseover for that same thread you showed in the screenshot, I get two dark vertical bars instead of those dates.

Going to see what other browsers show …

In Mozilla, I get the black bars as well. In IE6, I get a full text mouseover box (Firefox and Mozilla abridge it) and no bars, nothing out of the ordinary.

Most odd.

For what it’s worth, that’s the date that J Allard, having seen a copy of Mosaic, wrote a memo titled, “Windows: The Next Killer Application for the Internet”, in which he recommended integrating a browser and TCP/IP protocals into Chicago (then the code name for Windows 95).

No peculiar dates or black bars here.

Your Shira browser must be similar to IE in some respects, AHunter3. It doesn’t abbreviate the mouseover text as Firefox and Mozilla does, and they produce the black bars/dates. That might be part of the connection, here.

I’m using the latest upgrade of Mozilla Firefox and get nothing out of the ordinairy in my alt-tag for that thread.
