January 6th Hearing-Adjacent Discussion Thread

They have postponed the hearing due to the hurricane.

Are there any FL representatives on the committee?

Seems like, if not, that Congress has jack-all to do with responding to a hurricane. The American inability to do two things at once is very annoying. But I guess they want the TV coverage (and that is important to keep banging on what a criminal Trump is), so they needed to postpone so we can watch people standing outside in the rain.

I’m glad they postponed it, for selfish reasons.

I don’t have a busy life. I don’t have lots of plans, lots of appointments. Yet, it seems like almost every hearing conflicts with one of my rare scheduled outings. I have a “girls day” with my niece tomorrow, it’s a free day in the middle of her exam week and it’s been planned for a long time. So I’m glad I won’t miss it. (ETA— I mean the hearing, I never considered cancelling on my niece).

I tend to miss the good stuff, like a couple of years ago I decided to take one day and get a lot of stuff done, doctors appointment, car inspection, meeting with lawyer. What day did I pick for this? January 6th, 2021.

I feel ya, sister. I rearranged my schedule a lot this week to be sure I could take care of the January 6th thread.

But honestly, I’m glad they postponed. I’d rather have a more engaged electorate in advance of the mid-terms.

Plus even those of us who don’t live in or around Florida have friends and relatives there who are vulnerable to this hurricane’s damage, and I’m glad I can spare my attention and energy for them tomorrow.

Your mature, grown-up reply has made me ashamed of my puerile popcorn pettiness. So I just went and popped some for myself. :innocent:

I had a client who wanted to book an appointment tomorrow, smack dab when the hearing was scheduled. I said I couldn’t; I had an important meeting. Of course, I planned on meeting with my TV, and with you folks in the Follow-Along thread.

The client was fine with another date and time, so we set one for later this week.

< Making arm farts and stealing popcorn… >

Oh. Yes.

I hate when work interferes with important online events! I hope the Committee reschedules for a day next week so we don’t have to wait too much longer.

I hope so too, but I think that the Florida hurricane and subsequent cleanup/damage control will dominate the news until at least midweek. But that still leaves us with a few days next week.

As I understand it, they were ready to go tomorrow; so everything’s in place to reconvene at fairly short notice. Perhaps we won’t have to wait an unreasonable amount of time.

Hah, I’m getting my bi-something or other booster and the extra special senior flu shot during the hearing. Now I’ll have to schedule my shingrix and tetanus booster for the new date.

(I’d rather read the summaries written or referenced here on the Dope than be bored live)

I had my latest booster the other day. I had no reaction at all, not even a sore arm, which I did with every other one. I’ll get my flu shot next week.

Stephanie Murphy is one of the Democrats on the committee and she represents Florida’s 7th District.

Mrs. Thomas under oath said that the election was stolen.

I don’t doubt it, but do you have a link?

Here you go. Not paywalled since it is a gift link.

Thank you! I was interested in reading more about that!

She acts as though she was acting only as a concerned citizen, and she never discussed any of it with her husband the Supreme Court judge.
However, the only reason any of this was possible:
“Ms. Thomas exchanged text messages with Mr. Meadows, the White House chief of staff, in which she urged him to challenge Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory in the 2020 election, which she called a “heist,” and indicated that she had reached out to Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, about Mr. Trump’s efforts to use the courts to keep himself in power. She even suggested the lawyer who should be put in charge of that effort.
Ms. Thomas also pressed lawmakers in several states to fight the results of the election.”

Is because she is married to a Supreme Court judge. Yer every day concerned citizens get no such audience.

So what use is her testimony?

I wonder how the barges off of Gitmo are handling the weather?

My take is that Ginni Thomas is a nutjob of little intellect or importance. She seems to honestly believe that the election was stolen, so she obviously isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer. Nutjobs who dream up ways to ignore the will of the people and overturn the election are a dime a dozen. But this nutjob has connections, so people in power took her calls who ordinarily wouldn’t give her the time of day. She likely didn’t think of anything that those who were plotting the coup hadn’t already thought of, so her rantings were of no consequence. She had her fifteen minutes of fame, time to give her all the attention she deserves- namely none.
