Per WashPo, there are 14 identified victims to which he is to pay restitution. The big issue for him was using the internet and travelling across state lines to solicit teenage girls to have sex with him. He apparently asked one victim to help him find others, indicating that the younger the better.
The possession of child porn is secondary. Sounds like the dude he worked with was the one producing the child pornography, via hidden cameras in his home. Kids as young as 6. Dude then sent the pics and vids to Jared.
I do not wish death on the guy, nor that he receive any special extrajudicial treatment from his bunkmates. But 12 years does not seem like a lot of time to me. Of course, I’m a Public Defender. So I’ve seen people go away for much longer periods of time for much less.
It is in federal court which means he will have to do a minimum of 85% of the sentence.
They are federal charges. Whatever sentence he gets will be very close to the one he actually serves. The federal system doesn’t allow for many credits for good behavior or anything else. Inmates in the federal system typical serve 90%+ of their actual sentence according to a prosecutor I heard speak to that question.
Am I allowed to have a tiny bit of pity left over for the poor sandwich shop that is now publicly associated with a child pornographer? I know all publicity is good publicity, but it’s hard to imagine anyone seeing Subway’s name prominently displayed in these headlines and thinking, “Hmm…a sub sounds really good.”
I eat Subway regularly, but right now it’s hard to think about going there without thinking about this horrible crime.
And with no access to Subway, I can’t imagine how enormous he’s going to be when he gets out.
So as low as 4 1/2 years. I think that’s a light sentence under the circumstances.

Yeah it seems he did more than just look at pictures he shouldn’t be looking at. Which, given what happens in order to generate those pictures, is not a small matter to me. And that’s just looking at pictures.
He deliberately incentivized non-adults into having sex with him for pay and hooking him up with other kids for sex for pay.
That moves you directly from questionable/criminal to total scumbag in my book.
Wow. He was a success story that people looked up to. Some role model. He’s going to regret what he’s done, that’s for damned sure.
I’m very sorry for his family. And his victims.
Maybe he really will get aidesout of this.

Why do folks care about this guy more than anyone who commits the same crimes?
It was on CNN in the restaurant, and folks were standing around watching it.
Partly because of some fear he would get off easily, partly because the public likes to see successful people fall from grace, partly because the guy was annoying, and then finally prurient stories are always better when they’re about someone you’ve heard of before.
ETA: And then there’s the WTF aspect of guy hitting it big and then shooting himself in the foot.
Up to 10 1/2. Megan’s Law and supervised parole for life. It appears that he is also cooperating in order for prosecutors to get an even worse guy.

They will always give out deals with smaller fish to get bigger fish. Someone producing child pornography is a bigger fish.

You never know what will happen in a trial. The search warrant may get thrown out for procedural reasons. Witnesses may change their stories. Juveniles make bad witnesses and traumatized juveniles can be even worse.
It makes sense to give a deal.

I understand why they want to make a deal. Are you saying he has now been sentenced to 10 1/2, or is that the outside range?
The deal apparently is that he can’t ask for less than 5 and the prosecutor can’t ask for more than 12 1/2. So with the federal restrictions on early release he will do at least somewhere between 4 1/2ish and 10 1/2ish. There is no way I can predict how the judge will go and I didn’t hear when sentencing will happen. It will probably be a while. It seems like his next court appearance which has not been announced will be for him to officially enter the plea. A sentencing hearing will be some time after that.

On the serious side, fuck him. Paying for sex with a minor and then finding more underage girls for more underage prostitution? Yes, jackass, it’s illegal and amoral for about a thousand reasons.
It appears that each of the 14 victims will receive $100,000 from Jared’s fine. I hope it helps them out and gets them away from getting involved with grownup sickos.
Given how people feel about rapists, why exactly do they want to let rapists rape people in prison with impunity? Rape is bad, even if you don’t care about the rape victim, why would you allow the rapist to keep on happily raping with the guards winking and nudging and turning their backs?
The fantasy of the rapist getting raped in prison might seem like poetic justice, but it requires that we allow a rapist to get away with rape in prison. Or do we need a third rapist to rape the guy who raped the rapist?

Even with the sentence we don’t have all the details so there’s no way to tell if it’s a square deal all around yet.
His wife announced she is divorcing him. I hope any visitation will be supervised. Poor kids.
