Jeopardy! 2022-23

Yes, the expression “less than” without an object is very much a thing, at least in the world of online victimhood. I was confused the first time I heard it, because of how ungrammatical it is. Somebody posted something like “this makes others feel less than” and I’m thinking, “less than what?” But I soon noticed its use more and more. Here are a few examples:

Before and actors. I hope they don’t do this again. “Quality and duality” may have been the very difficult clue, which I did not get.

The final question was easy, a rotated V can only be three things, and exponents make little sense.

Yes! I thought that was a very tricky one.

Not, as @Arcite points out, if you’ve never heard the expression used without an object, as is apparently becoming more common now. I was a journalist, writer, and copy editor for 24 years, and have never come across that usage before now.

Fair enough. I got it right away, but the usage was odd enough I questioned if it was the answer although there were no real alternatives.

I didn’t read it literally. I thought “rotational velocity” and the only thing I could come up with was “what is spin?”

I didn’t actually see that show, but read the clue in this thread. In the proper context, who knows if I’d have gotten it right.

Yes, that was the one Ken commented on as being very difficult, and it triggers my vocab-Nazi tendencies: quality originally meant the degree or rank of something’s characteristics. A thing can be “high-quality” or “low-quality.” It bothers me that, through use of the phrase “high-quality,” just plain “quality” has become a synonym for “excellence.”

It helps to know the category: Symbols. It seemed obvious the correct response would be the name of a symbol itself, not necessarily the concept a symbol represents.

If it was possible to give partial marks for the final question, the answer “inequality” was not actuallly wrong.

My wife and I both had the FJ before Ken finished reading the question, and were also surprised only one contestant got it right.

For the quality/duality clue, I guessed “gift” and “rift.” In my imagination, the judges would have accepted it and adjusted my score during the commercial break.

For those worried about spoilers: why in the world would you even click on this thread before you’ve seen the episode? That’s just asking for spoilers.

In general I agree…but…

If someone on the east cost see the new game hours before us on the west coast, we might think the thread is still discussing yesterday’s game.

I believe the earliest the show airs anywhere in the United States is sometime in the morning, so any posts might be discussing that day’s game.

I can sympathize with wanting to participate in the general discussion without having tonight’s episode spoiled for you if you are on, e.g., the West Coast.

But I think considering revealing categories to be spoilers is a bit much.

Sometimes I get two or more episodes behind. When that happens I just keep an eye on the date of each post. When I get to the date of a game I haven’t seen yet, I stop reading. It’s not that hard.

Here in Hawaii, the show appears at 4:30pm, which this time of year is 11:30pm EST. We’re lucky enough that this March Madness crap can mean they are able to show it earlier instead of preempting, and they’ve run it at 12 noon a couple times. I really only read the Board once a week now, just don’t have time for it, but I still think spoilers are a good idea.

I got the < less than symbol easily, since it’s a common term in programming. I thought it was obvious, but it obviously wasn’t.

I was surprised they didn’t allow powwow as a rhyming phrase, when hobnob was the answer. Maybe the previous champion will be back, but I doubt it.

If I remember correctly, because I can’t remember where I read it, Jeopardy airs at 11 or 11:30am Eastern Time in one of the Southern states. Don’t quote me.

I too thought the < symbol was commonly understood. I thought that was an easy one.

Obviously I cannot vouch for the accuracy of each market, but I do know that this timeslot is correct for my local station.

Another fascinating FJ betting situation in the March 28 show. With DJ coming down to its last two clues the scores were:
Nicole - 9,600
Mara - 4,200
Lisa - 4,600

Lisa got the second last clue for 800, and time ran out leaving the last clue not used. This prevented Nicole from having a runaway. Going into FJ the scores were now:

Nicole - 9,600
Mara - 4,200
Lisa - 5,400

Nicole’s dilemma was: if she covered Lisa’s double-up to 10,800 she would have to bet 1,201. But that bet would put Mara into a win situation when Mara doubles to 8,400.

In other words, Nicole could bet:
1,200 - will tie Lisa (if both get the FJ clue correct). Mara can now tie (Nicole and Lisa do not get the FJ clue correct, but Mara does)
1,201 - will beat Lisa (both correct). Will lose to Mara (Nicole and Lisa not correct, Mara correct).

A couple of tidbits from The Jeopardy Fan:

Buzzy Cohen will be hosting a new podcast about the show’s history, titled This Is Jeopardy! ; the first episode will be released on April 26.
