So here we have a story on a “backlash” from viewers of a game show about the pronunciation of a response, whose entire substance is two tweets? I think there must be more substantial things going on in the world that CNN could pay attention to.
I think if a reasonable person would know to whom you’re referring, you should get credit (and that also lets the host then very sanctimoniously pronounce it correctly).
Ken Jennings is in, Mayim Bialik is out for the remainder of the season (20 episodes) due to the writers’ strike (Bialik is choosing not to work in support of the writers).
Best news I’ve heard today.
mmm
Keen!
I wondered if the clue creators were part of the Writer’s Guild. Found thiis:
Jeopardy!, which is produced by Sony Pictures Television, is a WGA show and features contributions from WGA writers, but the questions were written in advance of a season and the strike.
Brian
Bad look for Ken to cross the picket line, though.
Yeah, I’m glad to see less of Mayim, but I support unions, so I’m ambivalent about Ken’s position here.
Are other Hollywood trade unions honoring the writers’ strike on shows currently shooting (i.e., with completed scripts)?
For the most part, that seems to be the case. SAG-AFTRA members have been picketing alongside WGA members and other unions (Teamsters, etc.) have also expressed solidarity. A couple of shows that have tried to continue filming (Evil from CBS) have been successfully shut down thanks to WGA picketing. I have to wonder if they will try to do the same to Jeopardy.
My television guide’s boilerplate description of Jeopardy! Masters is kind of odd:
Jeopardy! Masters
S1 E4 ‘Games 7 & 8’ - It is a special event in commemoration of the Jeopardy, and will be organized on Primetime. (CC, HD) Game Show, First aired: 5/12/2023.
Anyway, please be enjoying special contest with feature strongest contestants.
NYT crossword #406 (in my local paper Thursday) has the byline “Sam Buttrey.” It’s got to be the same guy, right? I really like him, wish he was doing better on Masters.
My wife and I are really enjoying Jeopardy Masters. The masters are much more interesting to watch than the regular contestants.
Based on the ridiculous Celebrity Jeopardy, played mostly by idiots we’ve never heard of getting dumb-downed questions wrong, I wasn’t expecting much from this next attempt to expand the franchise.
So I hadn’t been paying much attention, and didn’t even know it had started until people started talking about it here on Tuesday. Fortunately, I found a way to see the one we kissed, and started recording the rest.
It’s a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I don’t see how it could become a regular thing.
They are planning a few more interseason tournaments for later in the year.
I watched a bit of Celebrity Jeopardy and find the questions much easier than the regular show. I don’t have much interest in watching more. But maybe I will give Masters a try, as I like the contestants better.
I remembered where I saw the news about the new tournaments next season:
… a “Champions’ Wildcard” Tournament will be instituted as part of this fall’s postseason play, in between Second Chance (whose return was confirmed today) and the Tournament of Champions. Every single player who wins a game in Season 39 will be invited to the event (if they haven’t qualified for the Tournament of Champions).
While full details of the event have yet to be announced, it is anticipated that the full postseason schedule is intended to take 10 weeks.
We’ll have to see how this plays out, but I’m not optimistic it will be better than regular season play. I suspect they plan to expand to another level, hence the “Wildcard” tournament. That seems to be the implication of this thread:

ETA:
should of course be “missed.”
Good lord. Was tonight’s (regular) Jeopardy the most one-sided ever?
The scores going into FJ were approx:
$29,000
$800
$0
Since Ken isn’t really an actor, he’s just a game show contestant that parlayed his 15 minutes into a hosting gig. He has no loyalty and not going to hurt his chances at further acting or writing jobs.
There have been cases where only one player goes to Final Jeopardy. I haven’t seen it happen for a long time. When it does, the procedure is a little different. Since there’s no suspense over who will win, the player’s wager is revealed first, and then their response.
The weren’t very good on the game show hosts category, tonight.
Over on Masters, Sam continues to amuse me.
“True that, K-Dawg!”
Ben! (who teaches at St Norbert College in Green Bay) is back. I missed the start, I assume they explained the situation (he had an illness and could not return after his third game)
Spoiler:
Today he killed it, earning $60,000
Brian
Bialik just said that he wasn’t able to travel. No mention of an illness.
Sad to see Hannah lose convincingly to Ben. A great competitor, I think she just wasn’t as fast on the buzzer and the selection of topics was unlucky.
