Getting a triple stumper is always fun, but when you get a triple stumper in Final Jeopardy, Tournament of Champions, you can crow. Caw! caw!
Did anyone else think that the wording of Yesterdays FJ was confusing? It could easily have been interpreted that the answer phrase they were looking for was something that generally meant “unfulfilled promise”.
Yeah, I never thought of it meaning that, but I got it anyway.
That’s exactly what I thought they were looking for so I didn’t how the answer fit.
The clue was: “Andrew Johnson vetoed a bill that gave reparations to formerly enslaved people, hence this phrase for an unfulfilled promise”
I can’t see how to read that as anything other than looking for a phrase that means an unfulfilled promise.
At least I got today’s correct!
As a white kid educated in the 1960-70s, I didn’t learn about it in school. I first heard the phrase in 1989, because it’s the name of Spike Lee’s production company, and that year he released Do the Right Thing, the first of his films I saw. It was some time later that I somehow found out about Sherman’s order (that Johnson vetoed).
I didn’t realize that it is now commonly used as an allusion to a broken promise made to a minority group.
The phrase “40 acres and a mule” has come to symbolize the broken promise that Reconstruction policies would offer economic justice for African Americans.[251][252]
I was a bit confused as well, but apparently it does mean “a broken promise,” at least sometimes.
This entry in The Free Dictionary gives “A promise or assurance that proves to be false” as the second definition of “40 acres and a mule”
Well, I thought people did actually get 40 acres and a mule.
Chalk up one in the loss column for my grade school education.
(no I didn’t get that FJ)
I may get yelled at, but i found that winner of Second Chance Tournamant VERY annoying. I’m glad she didn’t win. How can it be possible to be so perky and still be grating?
Was that Rowan? I didn’t like them either.
Well, you won’t get yelled from this household. We found them far too annoying. I found them even more annoying than What’s…Amodio, and that’s a high bar.
And a shame, because they really were the best of the second chancers. Good knowledge and buzzer skills.
I was wondering how they were going to handle Amy and Matt in the ToC – answer: they and Mattea got a first round bye and are in th3 semi-finals along with the 6 winners of the quarter finals.
3 semi final games, the 3 winners go to the finals.
Finals is first to 3 wins wins the ToC

I agree with you.
I don’t want any contestants to feel uncomfortable while they are on the show but for me at least it’s clearly possible for them to be so comfortable as to be offputting. There was just something about Rowan that telegraphed that they thought they were the star of the show, with the previous 38 seasons merely setting up the Rowan storyline. I always got this vibe from Mattea, too. I consider it bad form on my part criticizing these folks based on how they come off on TV; there’s no reason to believe they aren’t lovely people in the real world. But for Jeopardy! viewing purposes I’m glad Rowan is out and I’m hoping Mattea gets bounced in the semis.
Rowan originally appeared on Jeopardy under a different name and gender, presumably the ones given at birth, and for the Second Chance Tournament chose to use their current ones. This was apparently a big step for them.
I think that accounts for a lot of Rowan’s exuberance on the show: it was a very public affirmation of their true identity. I can find overly chirpy people annoying, but Rowan didn’t bother me much because I sensed that was the reason.
I was not drawn to the chirpiness, either. But in my view there have been contestants who were even more annoying than Rowan.
The whole ‘being on Jeopardy!’ thing must be very stressful for a majority of contestants; I’m willing to be understanding. But it’s always a relief when we encounter contestants who are NOT ‘personality plus’ in their manner!
I’m kind of sorry that Rowan lost, because I thought a match-up of Rowan, Mattea, and Amy would have been great; it would have been interesting to see them interact. It would have been a huge statement about what is the new normal. On the other hand, it might have caused a few people to throw stuff at their TVs or rant about the downfall of America; good grief, get used to it.
Sincere question, not snarking: What’s “new normal” about Mattea?
(Mattea) I just googled her and see she’s gay. That in itself strikes me as “old normal”, but I see your point about the statement an Amy-Rowan-Mattea game would possibly make.
Tiny hands,
All my imaginary money on Amy in Tuesday’s exhibition game!
