Jerry Falwell in Critical Condition

I don’t like Falwell any more than the next guy, but I don’t wish him any harm. Like us all, he will die sometime. Whether sooner or later isn’t up to us to decide or concern ourselves with. I think he’s morally reprehensible, but whatever his ultimate fate isn’t up to me. If he lives, he lives and if he dies, he dies. I take no joy either way.

And I don’t think you have read Falwell’s quotes that closely, this man deserves every bit of pain and suffering that comes his way.
“If you’re not a born-again Christian, you’re a failure as a human being.” – Jerry Falwell (attributed: source unknown)

"And, I know that I’ll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way – all of them who have tried to secularize America – I point the finger in their face and say, “You helped this happen.” "
– Rev. Jerry Falwell, blaming civil libertarians, feminists, homosexuals, and abortion rights supporters for the terrorist attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, quoted from John F. Harris, “God Gave U.S. ‘What We Deserve,’ Falwell Says,” The Washington Post (September 14, 2001)

“AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals; it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.”
– Jerry Falwell (attributed: source unknown)

“The idea that religion and politics don’t mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.”
– Rev. Jerry Falwell, Sermon, July 4, 1976

“It appears that America’s anti-Biblical feminist movement is at last dying, thank God, and is possibly being replaced by a Christ-centered men’s movement which may become the foundation for a desperately needed national spiritual awakening.”
– Jerry Falwell (attributed: source unknown)

“The Jews are returning to their land of unbelief. They are spiritually blind and desperately in need of their Messiah and Savior.”
– Jerry Falwell, Listen, America!

“I do not believe the homosexual community deserves minority status. One’s misbehavior does not qualify him or her for minority status. Blacks, Hispanics, women, etc., are God-ordained minorities who do indeed deserve minority status.”
– Rev. Jerry Falwell, USA Today Chat, quoted from The Religious Freedom Coalition, “The Two faces of Jerry Falwell”

“The ACLU is to Christians what the American Nazi party is to Jews.”
– Rev. Jerry Falwell (attributed: source unknown)

“AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals. To oppose it would be like an Israelite jumping in the Red Sea to save one of Pharoah’s chariotters.”
– Rev. Jerry Falwell (attributed: source unknown)

“When lawlessness is abroad in the land, the same thing will happen here that happened in Nazi Germany. Many of those people involved in Adolph Hitler were Satanists. Many of them were homosexuals. The two things seem to go together.” - 700 Club, 1-21-93 (source: People for the American Way Foundation)

“…What kind of craziness is it in our society which will put a cloak of secrecy around a group of people whose lifestyle is at best abominable. Homosexuality is an abomination. The practices of those people is appalling. It is a pathology. It is a sickness, and instead of thinking of giving these people a preferred status and privacy, we should treat AIDS exactly the same way as any other communicable disease…” - 700 Club, 6-6-88 (source: People for the American Way Foundation)

“[Homosexuals]want to come into churches and disrupt church services and throw blood all around and try to give people AIDS and spit in the face of ministers.” Pat Robertson, 700 Club, 1/18/95 - People for the American Way Web site

“This conduct [homosexuality] is anti-social, and it is a pathology. It is a sickness, and it needs to be treated. It doesn’t need to be taught in the classroom as a preferred way of life…” - 700 Club, 3-7-90 (source: People for the American Way Foundation)

“It’s one thing to say, We have rights to jobs...we have rights to be left alone in out little corner of the world to do our thing.’ It’s an entirely different thing to say, well, We’re not only going to go into the schools and we’re going to take your children and your grandchildren
and turn them into homosexuals.’ Now that’s wrong.” - 700 Club, 9-17-92 (source: People for the American Way Foundation)

“The radical left is doing everything they can to destroy the moral fiber of America. They want to do away with the family. I am absolutely persuaded one of the reasons so many lesbians are at the forefront of the pro-choice movement is because being a mother is the unique
characteristic of womanhood, and these lesbians will never be mothers naturally, so they don’t want anybody else to have that privilege either.” - 700 Club, 5-18-93 (source: People for the American Way Foundation)

“[Gays seek] to destroy all Christians.” - People for the American Way, “Hostile Climate,” 1994, p.9.

“[Vice President Gore] recently praised the lesbian actress who plays ‘Ellen’ on ABC Television…I believe he may even put children, young people, and adults in danger by his public endorsement of deviant homosexual behavior…Our elected leaders are attempting to glorify and legitimize perversion.” People for the American Way, “Hostile Climate”, 1998, p.9.

But surely those that believe all his “insights” should be happy he is off to heaven?

I suppose Obituary editors across the US are doing some updates, just in case. I wonder if editorial cartoonists are warming up also.

I wish him the best.

“To live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

  • St. Paul, Philippians 1:21

Maybe this experience will teach him some of the meaning of compassion, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Oh, no doubt the guy is a reprehensible pinheaded pigfucking slimepit of a shitstorm of Nazi hate. But nothing is served by dragging ourselves down to his level. Besides, give the guy a break. When he finally gets to Heaven, he’s going to spend the first half of eternity licking toilets clean. For the Lord.

And lets remember the cretin has family and maybe even friends who are probably going through a difficult time right now. We don’t know if they’re as miserable cruds as he is.

whoops, I just realized one of those quotes was Pat Robertson. My apologies.

Meh. Tomato, tomahto.

I agree. I really have no comments to make here, because I can’t think of anything to say that I’d feel proud of later. It sucks, but sometimes you have to take the high road.

Grrr! Pretend I quoted tdn’s post #47.

Whatever. I expect you’ve showed up to defend Johnny Cochran then, who is having far worse things said about him.

Meh. I don’t hate Falwell, but if he dies, I’m OK, because the world will be better off without him, as a practical matter.

Falwell had better hope that God doesn’t have a sense of humor. I can only imagine one of those “St. Peter shows Falwell around Heaven/Hell” type jokes. It would complete ruin Falwell’s day if karma were the controlling principle of heaven, no?

And you know, NOBODY can plug a toilet like The God Almighty!

If God is so Almighty, can He make a burrito so big that even He can’t digest it?

Jerry Falwell? The name rings a bell alright.

Isn’t that the guy who fucked his mother in a outhouse?

tdn & NotMrKnowItAll, you’re both going to hell in a handbasket (look me up when you arrive!)–thanks for the laugh!

I’ve always fervently hoped that karma does rule in heaven.
