Jesus - REALLY Vancouver? It's a fucking hockey game.

Funnily enough I thought “sort of violence too often associated with Detroit basketball”.

In conclusion: sports are bad. So don’t do sports, m’kay?

There were reports the hooligans were looting the liquor stores, refueling for their idiocy. At one point, a CTV reporter caught a loser standing on the roof of the Bay, next to a burning car lighting up a bowl!!! What a black mark on something that usually mellow people out. I very much believe that drugs were involved, but probably cocaine, since pot doesn’t do this to people!!! I just hate how that was caught on camera. Hell, I’m sad (and angry) that the whole mess was caught on camera.

I’m not sure what you mean by this.

As a typical Canadian hockey fan I certainly wouldn’t be rioting in the streets: win or lose. Typical hockey fans in both countries wouldn’t do anything like this.

The few hundred assholes who did this (out of 200,000) are shit-disturbing fuckwads who have no place in society. They’re the same assholes who would cause this kind of shit at G8 summits and the like, while the vast majority of people are happy to protest peacefully within the law.

It’s shameful that these fucktards have now caused the rest of those paying attention to paint all Canadians, or all Canadian hockey fans with the same brush.

I’m embarrassed for Canada.

I would riot too if I had to sit through a soccer game.

Oh, we were talking about hockey? Sorry.

What next? Rioting over curling?

Only if you have the stones for it.

Curling rioters really get their rocks off.

They are taking this harder than I thought. Riots are bad enough but I just heard on the news that Canada is stopping mail delivery nationwide. I think we are seeing the earliest stages of perestroika. Stay safe Canadian Dopers and take care of yourselves and your families first.

I find it hard to believe just a few hundred idiots made up that large a crowd, and did that much damage. Maybe a few hundred hard core idiots, but there were, from photographic evidence, a lot more ‘hangers-on and enablers’ out there than just the enciters. It takes more than idiocy to start a riot - it takes numbers.

There are a lot of folks in Vancouver (a city I happen to love) who should be hanging their heads in shame this day.
I will note that there was one shot of a young couple laying in the street, right in the middle of things, locked in a full-on romantic embrace. That is the Vancouver I’d like to remember, and I would that more folks had followed suit - It would’ve put an entirely different face on the loss.

I don’t think it had much to do with the result of the game. The instigators were so looking forward to the chaos that they probably would have run amok even if the Canucks won the cup.

I think the mentality is “The cops are going to have their hands full - let’s break some windows and carry away what we can.”

That would be a comforting thought, but it implies much more intentionality than I think was present. I suspect sheer opportunism - i.e. a buncha assholes showed up for the game. When things went poorly, they were pissed, and things started to snowball.

Let me rephrase: Canada’s hockey fan base has a rowdier element in it than what you’d find in the US. Partly because hockey isn’t a big deal here, being overshadowed by the big 3 sports (football, baseball, basketball), whereas it’s appeal in Canada is broader.

Our own team, the Sharks, seems to made up mostly of Canadians, Finns and other assorted foreigners. Kids in the US just don’t play hockey much. We don’t live in a frozen wasteland for 9 months out of the year.

Yes, we’re done with the Arab Spring nonsense; bring on the Canadian Summer!

Well… The Canucks had more Americans on their roster than the Bruins, and the Bruins had more Canadians. Heck, one of the Bruins is from Vancouver.

Though, it is saying something when Vancouver is more destructive than Boston over a sporting event.

See, this is the type of behavior I expect from Canadians.

Inserted obligatory riot song here.

That’s fucked up. The cameras bother you?
To me, I’m looking at some AP photos thinking, Ha! Photographic evidence, they’ll be able to nail this asshole.

Yes, and if it was soccer it would of course have been absolutely understandable. Soccer is serious business. But hockey. That’s just ridiculous.

Not only that, but they’ve stopped flying Air Canada flights into and out of Vancouver!

I remember when Calgary damned near won the Cup a few years ago - our response to losing was to flash our tits on 17th Ave. (that’s not the royal “our”).
