Their sales didn’t decline.
For reasons which no one at the company has yet seen fit to divulge to me, they just stopped making Jncos and instead shifted focus to a women’s clothing line called J&N.

This thread just keeps on giving.
:dubious: How do you know?
I didn’t know that JNCOs were even around in the first half of this decade or that they ever sold at JC Penny or for $25. They were popular in my area from about '95 to '97 and then dwindled down drastically for the next 2 years or so. By the time the 2000s hit they were practically just a memory as far as I’ve ever known. And they were sold only at specialty/skate shops for $60-$100. They weren’t cheap jeans. You must’ve got them cheap because you were really late to the party.
Looks like they’re rebranding themselves now as a competitor to Affliction. Someone probably bought the name thinking it’d get them a little attention. It won’t work. Probably would’ve been better off starting from scratch.
God what am I talking about, these guys are punking us anyway.
I know because I exchanged emails with the men’s buyer at JCPenney back in 2005 or 2006, and because I spoke with one of the owners of Jnco by telephone around the same time, after I couldn’t find their clothes at even the specialty stores.
No, that’s just what JCPenney sold them for. The retail price was $40-45 dollars, but JCP frequently had them on perma-sale because they sold such high volume. And they didn’t really become a nationwide brand until the late '90s. Until around '95 or so, they were primarily sold only in LA. Starting in 1998, stores like JCP, Kohl’s, and Pacific Sunwear started carrying them.
No, the Revahs still own JNCO.
Oh and I erred, the other brand isn’t J&N, it’s J&Company. I always get that wrong, and it always takes me a couple of minutes to realize it.
Well of course they’re not going to tell you sales dropped. Walk into any business in America and ask how sales are. “Oh, pretty good,” “Really? There was dust on your door handle.” It’d be practically taboo for anybody to tell some random caller that sales are down.
You can’t think they were selling as well in 2005 as they were in the 90s, can you? Businesses don’t stop making profitable products-- unless they replace it with something even more profitable, which they didn’t.
Yes, this doesn’t conflict with my timeline of them being popular and sold only in specialty stores in my area from 95 to 97. Fits right in, actually.
Ok, you’re definitely punking us. You think when demand is high price goes down?
JCP has no reason to lie. They were selling them just fine, and then the manufacturer just stopped making the product. What would they be covering up in the name of self-interest? It’s not their product, after all.
I don’t think anything. I said, the owners of JNCO have never told me why they stopped selling, only that they decided to do so and concentrate on a new line, J&Company.
I don’t think anything. I’m just telling you what I was told by the buyer at JCP. I have no reason to doubt her.
Wal-mart certainly seems to keep prices low by selling in high volume. So do many other retailers.
If I can move 100,000 units a month, I have leverage to get a better price per unit from the manufacturer. They have incentive to sell to me at the better price, because their overall sales volume goes up. Their margin per unit may go down, but their gross profits will increase. I can then sell at a reduced price compared to other retailers, thus keeping my sales count high. Win-win.
Do you wanna know why JNCO is making “emo skinny ass” jeans?
BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THE SKATERS WEAR NOW.
Sorry. Fashion changes. Big ass jeans are no longer in. Jeans that fit or are small as hell are in now.
Go check out CSS skate catalog even. I’ve seen one recently. All the jeans are boot cut or skinny.
Skaters etc used to be JNCOs prime market (when I was a kiddo and all my friends skated, they wore JNCOs and similar). They are just catering to their market. If you all have an aversion to clothes touching your body, some jeans can be found in loose/baggy fits at least still, try something new. Or go somewhere like makeyourownjeans and get some gigantic ones made how you like them.
Wild. Who would have predicted such a turn?
Perhaps it’s that Jnco’s demographic are the teens and twenty-somethings of today? If you were buying original JNCO’s back in the day, you should be pushing 30 by now.
It’s funny, 'cuz I wouldn’t mind a pair of these new styles. And I’m 36. (Yet, I could never stand the old-style JNCO’s)
Wait. Does that make me Emo?
No, cmyk,it makes you fashion-conscious of this decade.
The thing is, JNCO was the trendsetter, not the trend follower. They led, they got out of the way, I guess now they are following. It’s disappointing.
Word.
They are just trying to make money. If companies don’t make money they cease to exist eventually. Get on the fitted jeans train or abandon JNCO and find bigass jeans somewhere else. Multiple people on this board have used http://www.makeyourownjeans.com/ and liked the results.
The skaters and the like have been wearing the skinnier jeans for a few years now. Even Hot Topic, a haven for kids trying to buck the fashion of the masses, only sells skinny denim - if you want baggy pants from there you have to go for the crazy raver pants with hooks and chains and whatnot hanging off of them.
And psst…brands like Ecko and stuff still sell baggy fit clothes. I’m sure you can even find Levis somewhere that are pretty big.
