It’s official.
Story here.
They made him an offer he could refuse.
As a fan of the Yankees, I thought I’d be more upset by this. I wish he would have stayed, but maybe it’ll work out better with someone else.
Maybe they’ll make him another offer that he’ll accept.
::sigh::
I don’t think so. The radio report I heard on the way home from work cited the management as saying they believed it was a fair offer, and that no further offers would be made.
Goodbye St. Joseph of Brooklyn. Thank you for your years of upright service. Thank you for 4 World Series.
However …
It is about damn time!

I liked Torre, never thought he was responsible for the Yankees’ recent post-season failures, and would have been fine with bringing him back.
On the other hand, I never thought he was a genius, never thought he was responsible for their string of championships, and would have been okay witha clean break.
But this… geez, could the Yankees possibly have handled this ANY worse? Either re-hire Torre or tell him candidly, “We’re grateful for all you’ve done, but we’re going another direction.” Instead, they’ve let him twist in the wind and then insulted him with an offer they KNEW he wouldn’t accept.
Again, Torre is a good but not brilliant manager. He’s not irreplaceable (no manager is). But… now what? Are the Yankees going to make REAL changes? If all they do is promote Don Mattingly to manager and keep the rest of the coaching staff intact, I’ll be wondering what the point was!
If anything, Cashman needs to go. I have been shouting this to the cruel, empty sky for years now.
Cashman has done an amazing job rebuilding our farm system in what amounts to two years time.
Sheffield, Damon, Giambi and even Pavano were not Cashman’s choices.
Wright and Farnsworth are two where he deserves the blame.

12 years is a long time with one organization. Might be better for both parties. Yankees will do fine. As will Torre.
I do not think the Yankees will make the playoffs the next 12 years in a row.
Of course that may well have happened with Torre at the helm as well… But I fully expect that The Torre Era will be looked back upon as a Golden Age for Yankee fans (even more so than it is already) when that 12-for-12, with 6 AL pennants and 4 WS championships in that run, is appreciated for how remarkable it was, mega-payroll or no.
At least that will shake out some of the bandwagon fans, who tend to be the most annoying. The “of course the Yankees win, that’s why I root for them” types, versus “I root for the Yankees, that’s why I want them to win”.
