Get the fuck out of here with “We don’t know”. You don’t know because you’re an idiot, but the rest of us have actually been paying attention to trends in social consciousness over the past fifty years. What happens in childhood not only affects one’s childhood, but it affects their adulthood, and the lives of the children they bring into this world. We’d be a much better society if abusers and those who enable them would just die already. They are a disease.
Someone who “turned out great” doesn’t molest their siblings.
Perhaps they should be attacked.
And what IS the best solution? Sweeping it under the rug? Sending their kid off to do construction work, like it never happened before? What would have happened if one of YOUR kids were molested? My dad would’ve fed the guy his own teeth. Parents are supposed to look out for their kids and protect them. Which the Duggars failed to do.
“My dad would’ve fed the guy his own teeth.” His own son? Really?
There are no set answers when a family is faced with this. What does any parent do when a child they deeply love does something terrible?
I will say the worse thing the parents did was not anticipating something like this happening. Granted parents always have a habit of thinking “this will not happen to my kid” and they probably never thought their son whom they love would ever do something like this. However I go by the philosophy “expect the worse, pray for the best” and they should have been looking for things like this as the boy went thru puberty.
His own son? Well, I don’t have any brothers, but if I did, and he were to do something like that to me, there’s no doubt in my mind that my father would make him regret it. Would my parents go to the police? I would imagine so.
Hell, IIRC, these people follow the whole, “spare the rod and spoil the child”, don’t they? (I can’t remember if that’s a Gothard teaching)
Wait, so you think that all parents should watch and make sure that their sons don’t molest anyone? I’d ask where the HELL you got such an idea, except perhaps I don’t want to know.
See, the problem is …how does one best protect your child from your child? If you have a sister Guin, imagine instead the molestation was coming from that corner. Would your dad knock out the teeth of your sister to protect you? Or vice versa? Would he call the cops on you if you fucked with his other daughter? I absolutely do NOT want to agree with UR, but its a a horrific place for a parent to be. The Duggars should have done a hell of a lot more to protect their kids, but Josh was one of those kids, too.
I sure as hell wouldn’t have gone on TV as a ministry to promote my Godly lifestyle though. I would have far too concerned with repairing my family to worry about camera angles.
If I molested my sister or vice versa? I would imagine so. I don’t think us being girls would have stopped him. (BTW, I don’t mean my dad would’ve literally have knocked anyone around. But would we have been sent to some “camp” and had it swept under the rug? I don’t think so.)
Interesting mental exercise; “If it happened in your family…”.
I did have an older brother (five years, not ten). He was the be all and end all to me and my parents’ golden child. I’m quite sure there would have been a huge “eww, ick” response from me which I’m pretty sure I would have shared with my parents. I seriously doubt though that they would have called in any outside ‘help’ to deal with it, definitely not any ‘authorities’. That being said, although sex wasn’t something openly discussed (my mother was a bit repressed*) it also wasn’t considered massively taboo. I think they would have had a major talking to with my brother but not much else.
This was 50 years ago so I’m pretty sure the mindset was different as to how to deal with something like this. I have no idea if there was ‘therapy’ available then. But the idea of involving outsiders in a family issue would have been unthinkable to my parents, and I think would still hold true today. Of course, the idea of offering our family as a moral guide to all and sundry a la’ Duggars is just a hysterical concept and would never have crossed their minds either.
she handed me a pile of ‘as you mature’ pamphlets when I looked like I might be hitting puberty and nothing further was said. I saved them and they still crack me up.
No, I am definitely not. His statements are here for everyone to read. He objects to the claim–that means he thinks it is untrue. When other people have assumed he thought it was untrue, he did not clarify otherwise. I’m only saying he thinks exactly what everyone else has said he thinks.
And asking someone if they meant what they said is kinda silly. Why would I do that? I am not at all uncertain about what Bricker thinks–because he’s told us what he thinks. I don’t do that thing where I say, “Do you really believe that?”
If Bricker was playing Devil’s Advocate, it’s up to him to tell us.

This is just the sort of situation for which the four magic words “I HAVE NO SON” were made.

That seems excessive for the actual situation - what was he, 15 years old? The parents’ responsibilities can’t be avoided as easily as that. By all means do the right thing (including therapy, I hope, as well as police) but are you advocating throwing a 15-year-old kid out because he did this?
For the record, I think what he did was sick and needed to be thoroughly dealt with. But I hope any teenager would be worthy of at least one second chance.
Agreed, Guin. And it makes me wonder, what if it was a Duggar girl that was infatuated with boys’ bodies? It’d probably be at least a month in her room with a chamber pot and only allowed to drink holy water to drive out the demon, then never married as she has allowed satan in her thoughts.
But, FUCK! This still is just so obviously such a retarded situation for the dumbest reasons, mainly that stupid storybook that inspires this “righteous lifestyle” and somehow gets the legal hand wave. Socially, these people are perceived as “noble, hard-working Americans”, but it’s nothing more than a outdated, cave-like cult that refuses to adhere with progress, and they still get a fucking reality show. What reality? Where?
