Joy Reid Says She Was Hacked (But She Wasn't)

Bullshit. I have friends on Facebook etc who are in no means a celebrity, but their accounts were hacked.

The Streisand effect strikes again. All she had to do was say “I was a different person back then. I deeply regret those quotes and apologize to the gay community. I will try to do better going forward.” The whole thing would have been forgotten about in a day and she would go back to being an obscure newsreader. But she had to come up with this hacking story, which is transparent BS, and now she’s a news story.

She now says that experts have not been able to prove that she was hacked.

If you watch MSNBC, you almost certainly have seen her. She is the person they use to cover absences for their on-air personalities in the evening slots.

I see the problem - “Hillary” doesn’t really lend itself to patter. Possibly if one loses the middle syllable:

Upset was he when sad Hill’ry failed to mount a vict’ry show

And even this has its flaws, and too much syllable-skipping feels like cheating.

Oh well…

Pianist and satirist Mark Russell has no fear of me
My poor efforts are amateur and prose flows clearly clumsily
It is quite clear I’d no career in writing for the cast of Glee
But I shall hope to cheer some dopes right here on the SDMB

I’m pretty liberal and I’ve never heard of her, but I don’t watch MSNBC, or any TV news. I basically get my news from the NY Times, NPR, and here. I figured this was the Joy from the View, but I guess that’s Joy Behar. I also know nothing of her, but I have at least heard of her.

Props to Bryan!

Sorry, I didn’t address the OP. It doesn’t seem like much of a debate topic, but I think she’s probably lying about the hacking. She may not remember posting what she did (just the other day, someone linked to a thread I started and I had no recollection of starting it), but she should own up to it.

I think that it has a lot of odd forced syncopation in it, but a lot of satire does and sometimes adds to the humor, even if the original G+S does not have it, so it’s all cool especially if you can nearly 100% carry the meter in relevant verse for 4 stanzas!

Already addressed. That’s typically an automated and untargeted fuckup by the person who was (not really) “hacked”. It happens all the time and now you’re spending spam. That’s not what supposedly happened here.

I like Joy Reid, and I know Republicans hate her because she isn’t afraid to call Republicans out when they lie their asses off on her show. It’s probably more than likely that she did post some homophobic things in the past, but she admits that she has progressed far on this issue and is now a big advocate for the LGBTQ community. She was brave and had members of that community on her show this morning and had a frank and honest discussion on how these things are hurtful to LGBTQs and she invited them to grill her on it, saying she deserved it. In other words, she had an open discussion with people liable to ask her tough questions, something that orangeanus would never dream of.

Once again, this episode exposes the complete and utter moral bankruptcy of the right wing, they see this as an excuse to shout from the rooftops, “HA HA! You have a mote in your eye, therefore I can ignore the plank in my own eye!”, all the while dislocating their shoulders by patting themselves on the back for their fine Christian beliefs.

Remember when a conservative Latino warned about having “a taco truck on every corner”? That was from her show.

Tacos. Yum.

I came in here to post that. While she wasn’t the main focus that clip got played all over the place for a bit so lot’s of people beyond the MSNBC audience have seen Joy even if they don’t recall her specifically.

Here’s a link.

I frequently watch MSNBC on YouTube, mostly Rachel Maddow, occasionally Morning Joe and others, but I’ve never heard of Joy Reid.
Thus I hope you find my claims hard to believe also. Frankly.

But am I outraged — outraged! — that somebody somewhere who is not a card-carrying Trumpist might have done something bad. Outraged! What is this world coming to?

What does Karl Rove think about Joy Reid? Sean Hannity, Judge Roy Moore, Paul Manafort, Paul Ryan, Alex Jones? I hope they are all giving this horrid woman the condemnation she so richly deserves.

I don’t know if she really wrote the things that have come to light recently. There have been some people who say that the screen grabs look like they might have been manipulated. So maybe hacked isn’t the right word but framed is closer if that is the case? One analysis I read suggested the wording was not like the rest of her stuff and the timestamps were at times when she was on the air and couldn’t be posting, for example. Now, I don’t know if that information is correct. And I haven’t read that anyone else used Way Back or whatever to verify these posts other than the original person who dug them up.

For me, I can’t tell if she really did write them or not. It’s so muddied now and there are so many people who seem overly invested in this that I can’t trust anyone’s take is unbiased. Some people seem determined to vilify her, some to exonerate her.

Some people have the worst take: not believing she might not remember writing them. Sure, you can believe she’s lying, but I can believe her not remembering every post she ever made a decade later. I’ve been here for almost a decade, some other sites longer, and if you pulled up stuff from years ago I might not recognize myself. I can believe that it’s possible that a decade ago she was in a mood and wrote something terrible or tried to be funny and failed and then completely forgot about it because the person she is now would never say those things. Again, she might be lying about forgetting, but I don’t see how that’s unbelievable on its face. No one’s ever read an old diary of theirs?

Anyway, I am not putting her on my personal boycott/avoid list. She may have had horrible views not that long ago, but what she’s doing now is different. She did own other things she said and has grown as a person since they were said/written. She gave a good apology. And I know she’ll continue to advocate for equality for the lgbqtia/etc community. For me, acknowledgment, apology, and changed behavior are good enough.

One last completely subjective thing is that I’m trying to listen to my gut. It’s not always right and I don’t think it’s the best thing for everyone all the time, but frequently when I look back, I find my gut was correct. I don’t base big decisions on just my gut but I do try to use that in conjunction with objective facts. My gut is saying that whatever happened before is not the Joy she is now.

I don’t know who Reid is, but Bryan Ekers libretto is brilliant.

I don’t know anything about this case, but more than once I have been reading a zombie thread here and discovered that a post I just read without recognition was in fact written by me several years earlier. So that part is certainly believable.

Heh my first thought was that it was Cruz.

(As far as MSNBC is concerned, I watch Rachel Maddow every once in a while, never go there otherwise. I’m mostly about CNN as far as TV news goes.)

I hadn’t heard of her until reading an article about her claim of being hacked, and until this thread, didn’t know that she is my ox or that she suffers from puncture wounds. Sending my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery!

Truth be told, my actual reflex was potentially warnable, as it would have been negative commentary on the OP and his tendency to start threads along these lines, i.e. not “this thing just happened and I think it is terrible; what do the rest of you think?” but “The fact that you aren’t discussing this already supports my dislike of you.” I don’t believe the OP really cares about criticizing Joy Reid, but he appears quite fond of criticizing this message board.

The reason this is significant, or in other words the reason Joy Reid is significant, is because of her reaction to Anne Coulter’s prediction a year out that Trump would win the election. Any bad news about her is very welcome to Trump supporters - shadenfraude or what have you.

In the case of the Crist stuff, she apologized for the insensitivity, but her “line” was that Crist was a Republican so she was only attacking Republican hypocrisy on gay issues, albeit in an insensitive manner. The newer stuff (at least some of it) doesn’t fit that line, so it’s harder to defend and undermines her earlier position.

These posts go back a while, and she gained prominence over time. She were pretty obscure when she wrote them.
