I never got into Smallville, but I may have to catch this episode.
That looks very cool. I never got into Smallville, either, but I’ll make sure to record that episode. Thanks for the alert.
Well, I thought it was done rather well. I kinda wish we could have seen Alan Scott and Jay Garrick, but I imagine TV rights to Green Lantern and The Flash are tied up.
Really, really hated Amanda Waller. They had clearly cast a non-fat actress and she was trying to make herself look fatter by tucking her chin into her neck. It just didn’t work. Such a shame they couldn’t get CHH Pounder who basically recreated Amanda Waller for Warehouse 13.
I liked Hawkman, but everyone else was Blah.
Waller is played by Pam Grier, who is nowhere near as slender now as she used to be.
Pam Grier, two years ago. Only difference between her there, and how she played the Wall, is she was a lot stiffer as Waller.
My only complaints with the actors were Stargirl and Hawkman - Stargirl’s acting was…bad - so bad, in fact, that when she first showed up, in tears, I wondered if she wasn’t supposed to be acting (and badly) in character. But then she flipped out at Clark, so apparently not.
And Shanks should have just used his regular voice, even in costume - the fake voice he used when he suited up was distracting as hell. (If it could have been justified, having it processed like Green Arrow’s would have been better.)
(I did have an issue with Icicle’s makeup, but it would have been hard to make it better than it was…maybe cg enhance it.)
Skyman and Doctor Fate were impressive…and, yeah, it would have been nice to see more of the JSA - including Sandman managing to get a line or two in before he was iced (sorry, had to). Although seeing Ma Hunkel in the filmed footage was a pleasant surprise.
I’m wondering whether they’re planning a New Gods appearance somewhere down the pike, or whether Geoff’s just being a terrible tease with Waller’s ‘this…apocalypse’ line.
(Writing wise, I have a problem with Stargirl, too…she took too fast a turn from her early Stars and STRIPE era personality to current personality. I usually LOVE Courtney under Geoff’s pen, but she was the episode’s weak link - bad acting, iffy writing, horrible costuming…)
And played her in Justice League Unlimited.
About Dr. Fate
No way Icicle kills Dr. Fate. Could never happen. Heck, even Star Man should have been able to handle him. It’s not easy to take me out of my suspension of disbelief, but that did it for this comic geek.
I thought Pam Grier, who isn’t a “non-fat actress”, was acceptable for Amanda Waller. If not her or CCH Pounder, I don’t know who gets the role. We did get a brief glimpse of Alan Scott and his ring.
So this season will see even more groundwork for the Justice League and Suicide Squad/LexCorp liaison, which I predict will end as Suicide Squad vs LexCorp, but I didn’t get who will be the ‘big bad’ for the season. Still Doomsday?
Doomsday’s been buried at the bottom of an oil well, or something like that. I suppose it will take a while but he’ll be back.
A resurrected Major Zod and his army of de-powered Kandorans are the big bads. They are trying to build a tower that will somehow turn the Sun red and counteract the blue kryponite they had been saturated with.
Not a Badhnesian in sight. Sigh.
What did you expect? Were you in Metropolis Friday night? Don’t feel too bad, Icicle would have gotten you too. Grrrr.
I kind of liked it. I enjoyed the hinting of the “training the next generation” direction so I am wondering if this is a backdoor pilot.
One thing I really could have done without was the “I saw the batman movie,” voice for Hawkman.
The characterization wasn't bad for the bird guy, but they proved that it is very hard to do Hawkman without the outfit looking like a kid using a pair of leftover Christmas play angel wings (yes I did go trick or treating as Hawkman when I was a kid, why do you ask). ;)
I think they’ve been heading that way for a while. Green Arrow now has Speedy, though she hasn’t put on a costume, yet.
Even with a larger than usual special effects budget, Smallville was going to be contrained by CGI-ing Hawkman flying. So they went the Flash Gordon route.
Hey, maybe they could have gotten Brian Blessed to play Hawkman instead.
I saw that Inza Nelson is in an upcoming episode, focusing on Zatanna. I’m sad that I missed the last 2.5 seasons since they started introducing the DC Universe and that I’m just now catching up.
Speedy, Stargirl… Maybe they can introduce a team of teenaged superheroes? What would they call it?
Hmmm. Titanic Teens? Young Justice Society? Justice Minor League? ![]()
Say, you’d think that a founding member would have garnered a bit more respect.
