June, no, NOTHING! (Monthly Mini-Rants)

At 3:30 am the smoke detector in my bedroom went off for 3 (VERY LOUD) beeps. Then stopped. I essentially levitated out of bed. Checked over the house. Everything was fine. It never went off again. It then took me abut 2 hours to go back to sleep.

I hate smoke detectors. The only thing they ever do is wake me up when the battery is going and go off if I cook at too high a temperature. Now I can add random beeping bullshit to the reasons I hate them.

A couple months ago I noticed a bunch of cigarette butts near my neighbors’ small travel trailer parked near the road on their vacant lot next door. I surmised someone had stood there and smoked a bunch and let them drop. It kinda pissed me off as I stood in that spot and noticed I could see into my kitchen window. Someone watching and smoking, fucking creepy.

So today I leave the house for a walk, and down the street I see an individual in shorts and a blue shirt crossing the road and entering the driveway of a seasonal vacation house 3 doors down. I know the family has been in town this week. I walk past the house and it looks all buttoned up, trash can at the curb, boat trailer gone, all is quiet. But whatever.

I return from my walk and as I near the vacation house I see blue shirt guy off a few feet in that yard practically standing in the bushes. At first I’m thinking he’s the owner and messing with the sprinkler system or planters, then I smell cigarette smoke. I know who it is , another neighbor, gotta be 70 something and he’s standing practically enveloped, hiding? in this big bush smoking. How fucking weird, I ignored him but now I know he likes to leave his yard to take up his smoking habit and spy on neighbors at the same time?

I’m definitely keeping my guard up now. It’s known and I’ve confirmed he has an older relative living with him who is on the sex offender registry. Is Bud trying to hide his smoking from his wife? Or creeping around?

If I come across him again I’m calling him out and insist he pick up his fucking butts.

The Lego Millenium Falcon is $850, over 7500 pieces, & when fully built about 2’ x 3’.
Part of me really wants to buy it; the rest of me is it’s $850, & then what are you going to do with it when you build it? It’s too wide to place on any shelf & I’m a bit too old to hang it from the ceiling in my bedroom, besides, one would probably need to anchor it from a joist given the weight of it. It’s cool, but I’m not going to spend that much money to build & then toss it.

SO sold her house & was renting it back…until today. New owner/landlord turned out to be flaming a-holes. They came over for a walk-thru & she said she’d clean up, run the vacuum, etc…& then the power goes out. Seem the 'lectric co decided to process her terminate order early in the day. Oh well, she tried to clean but I guess they’ll get it back with dust bunnies & dog fur on the floor from what was under furniture. Too bad, soooo sad :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

You can always Harrison Ford it.

Do you have a leaf blower? Blow those butts back into his yard.

Okay, explain this to me. I go to look up wooden embroidery stands online, they are like $800, which is not happening, so it looks like I need an alternative.

I’m looking at an alternative embroidery stand, which is metal and comes with an LED light and magnifier and pattern holder.

There are two options.

One is $170 and called “Stich Smart 2 Embroidery Stand.”

The other is $120 and is called “Art Deco.”

I can’t figure out the difference, so I get the $170 one to be on the safe side.

The product arrives and is cool and all, but there’s no LED light or pattern holder included.

I go back and look at the $120 “Art Deco,” and it shows the magnifier etc. I guess that’s the cost for those two accessories? But the item description says it includes the stand.

I ordered what I think are the attachments but may in fact come with another stand but if they do, why the hell is it $50 cheaper to get MORE stuff?

We’ll see what gets shipped to my door.

I find this very annoying because it wasn’t sufficiently clear what I was buying didn’t include the accessories, and because calling such a product “Art Deco” makes no sense, and because I was planning to spend $170 not $290.

Can you link to one - I’d like to see what justifies that astronomic price !
I did a google search for “wooden embroidery stands” and the ones that
come up are ~30-60 (£ not $ but they’re not that far off).

This is the one I looked up when I got a discount code on FlossTube:

Maybe I should have looked harder, I dunno. I went straight to Amazon from there.

So far I’m pleased with the one I bought, I just want the attachments too.

(The cool thing about the one I bought is that it rotates fully 360 degrees so it’s easy to flip over to the back - that’s a hard feature to find.)

Spiders… I had my smoke detector do that to me once in the middle of the night. After my heart rate slowed down I took the detector down to check the battery and found a spider web in there.

That’s hysterical.
I found a spider web between the back burners on my stove last year.
Clearly I do not use that appliance as often as I should.

So the quote bubble for comments disappeared again tonight.

I found it under the + sign - hidden.

Yep. Spider webs, dust, etc. can get in those and cause a malfunction. I found out we are supposed to vacuum our hard-wired detectors monthly to prevent this. Who knew?

I’ve never thought about it, but it makes sense. It needs to be able to sense smoke in the air, and can’t do that if it’s clogged up with stuff. And I could see it even reporting a false positive, if it mistakes something else for smoke.

I’m the same way with the Lego Titanic…$680, and 9,090 pieces. I actually have a space that could accomodate the model, but that just seems so extra. I also haven’t bought the Great Deku Tree yet because I haven’t quite figured out where I’m going to display it (and I think it retires next year, so I should go ahead and buy that one).

Great. Not me, I didn’t know!

I have only one hard-wired one, but it is mounted about 10 feet off the ground, high up on a wall with a vaulted ceiling and impossible to reach without aid of a ladder. I have lots of battery-powered ones that are much easier to reach, so the hard-wired one is on its own. If it dies a spider related death, so be it.

It occurred to me a few months ago that I can’t remember the last time I’ve changed the batteries on my smoke and CO detectors. I’ve got the batteries but I don’t trust myself to climb up a ladder. I’ve got an appointment for someone to come over next Monday afternoon to help me with that, as well as a few other household chores.

Hopefully not at 3 am!

I agree!

Call the non-emergency phone # for you local fire dept; many will bring & install new ones for free; some might even replace the battery, if the detector is not too old.

Heres my rant: June is over. Summer is almost over! Ju lie? Not really, I am honest.
