Bert, Ernie, and Big Bird are all over 50, having debuted in 1969 and clearly not being newborns at that time. Elmo is over 30. While it would be scandalous were they to indulge in hookers and blow in light of them all supposedly being role models for young children, their age shouldn’t factor into it.
I think of them like Peter Pan, perpetually young.
