A few weeks ago, I interviewed for a job. It looks to be a great position, with a great company. It’s also in Vancouver, BC, so that’s pretty exciting. I thought the interview went well, and I really loved the town.
There’s still no news on whether I nailed the position or not, however. Supposedly, it was down to just me and one other guy, who they were interviewing a few days after they interviewed me.
Last Monday, I sent an email asking the HR person if there’d been a decision, but she said they probably wouldn’t decide 'til the end of last week. So here I am on THIS Monday, with no new email from them. I just sent another email, asking if there was any news.
Gah! I’m a nervous wreck. Part of me just wants to know- but the truth is closer to “I want to know that they’re going to offer me the position.” I haven’t wanted a job this much before- I’m trying to not get my hopes up, but I can’t help it.
It can be very frustrating when a prospective employer doesn’t let you know whether or not you got the job. This may be because:
- You’re gonna get the job, but the paperwork to approve the hire hasn’t reached the desk of whoever has to sign off on it.
- They’re doing more interviews but want to keep you as a prospect.
- They’ve hired someone else, but the person who’s supposed to tell you hates having to break the bad news to anyone.
- Some other damnfool reason.
Be polite but firmly persistent - hope they hire you. Good luck!
I am in the exact same situation this week. You have my deepest sympathies. Walked out of the interviews, somewhat handpicked, sure I had the job, with everyone involved thrilled with me but knowing there was one other candidate, and now 2 weeks later I’m certain that I don’t have it because Jesus Christ himself descended from heaven to apply for a one-year visiting assistant professor in a small town in the American midwest. Or something. Waiting is agony!
