I was actually disappointed in the episode. As soon as the sheriff asked Raylan where Eva was, I got suspicious. When he showed up at the courthouse and escorted her away from Raylan’s ex-wife, I knew he was up to no good. I’m sorry to lose that character, too. It was good for Raylan to have a local LEO ally.
The only thing I liked about the episode was Art chewing out Raylan for continuing his relationship with Eva. In a law enforcement bureaucracy like the Marshals Service, you just can’t be sleeping with a witness after being repeatedly warned not to… but that’s Hollywood for you. I actually think it’d make a better drama if Raylan had to struggle with temptation more, wrestling with the clash between his duty and his heart, rather than just being her boyfriend.
If it does, I haven’t figured out how to use it.
Elendil’s Heir, I was disappointed at how easily Raylan succumbed too, but I can rationalize it. I think it helps make the character more believable. He has some history with Eva and he has some feelings for her and controlling his behavior isn’t always easy for him. Sometimes he doesn’t even try.
He *does *have a little problem with impulse control, doesn’t he?
On our set the captions controls are under a menu item called “advanced features” and there are a whole lot of options for what sorts of captions you can get. Trial and error has convinced me that ours works best with “CC1.” That may be nowhere near common terminology, but it works fine here.
When you set things up on a DVD for subtitles, do you have problems with that? Or do you just not use them there either?
No problem there – there’s a button on the DVD remote that says Subtitles. I don’t even know where the TV remote is – we use the DirecTV remote and there’s no option in the Menu for subtitles.
Where have I seen the guy who played Daddy Crowder? He looked familiar.
Was he Sabretooth? That just came to me…
Checked: Nope. Should have been though!
Extra edit: It’s M.C. Gainey - M.C. Gainey - IMDb - Last edit, I promise: I recognized him from Con Air. Put the bunny back in the box!!!
Was Ava shooting back? I counted twelve shots before I heard Raylan’s pistol.
Oslo, I don’t think Eva had a gun, did she?
I haven’t seen anyone mention it, so I thought I should. You can watch Justified on Hulu now. They have the trailing five episodes.
I watched the first five episodes in one sitting. Pretty good stuff.
Mr. Friendly from Lost - also apparently a Sherrif in Happy Town.
SHe went and got her gun and I believe fired atleast one shot - into the ceiling I believe.
I have a hard time believing Raylan had a hard time fighting Red - I’ll admit Red had the element of surprise, but sheesh.
I liked the twist of the local sherrif being bad, but also would have preffered Raylan have atleast one friend that isn’t.
My only complaint is a very small amount of Studio 60-ish overselling. One of the reasons I hated Studio 60 so much is because every episode had several characters extoll the comedic genius of Sarah Paulson’s character, like she was the funniest person ever. And yet her character was never funny. Super grating.
Eva is hot, but I’m getting tired of every character going on and on about how she’s the hottest woman who ever lived. This hasn’t bothered me anywhere near the amount it bugged me on Studio 60, but I have noticed it. Very minor annoyance at worst, but it could get more tiresome if they keep doing it.
Not in his first scene in the car, but almost immediately in his second scene at the cabin.
If this were set in Miami or LA, Eva wouldn’t raise an eyebrow - in Harlan Ky she’s quite the unique individual - has all her teeth and knows how to use a shotgun.
In the scene in jail between Boyd and Raylan, I got a vibe that Boyd is totally bullshitting his religious “changed ways” to get out of jail more quickly. There was a close-up of just his eyes, and I had a “ping!” moment. We’ll see…
I’ve figured that all along. He’s running a scam of some kind.
<old joke>
You know how to tell when Boyd is lying?
His lips are moving.
</old joke>
Definitely. I doubt that he’s fooling anyone. Does anybody believe a con who says he’s found Jesus (or Buddha or Allah etc.)? It might have worked once, for what, 20 minutes in 1952?
I think he’s doing it because he’s bored.
Or maybe finding religion still works with parole boards in Kentucky. ?? Nah.
In the latest episode, when Olyphant is sitting on the porch talking with his ex-wife, he says, “Losing someone like you just eats at a guy” but I can’t make out what her response is. I’m watching on Hulu so no captions available. Replaying it three times gives me no clue…can someone help out?
I don’t remember that line - sorry.
Just read Leonard’s short story “Fire in the Hole,” from which this series is derived. It’s pretty much, word for word, what we saw in the pilot episode… except that Boyd is well and truly dead at the end. You can find it in the 2002 EL collection When the Women Come Out to Dance.
“That’s the first you ever said that.”
