"Justified" - new FX series - anyone watch?

just bought the pilot last night on itunes. It blows.

Sez you!

You’re right. Don’t watch any more episodes and definitely don’t read or participate in any threads related to it! Whew, glad we got that sorted out.

Good observation. I watched the earlier episodes on Hulu along with the behind the scenes clips. In one of them it’s clearly noted Matt Dillon is a model for Raylan.

Thanks, cstamets!

I’m in love with the show and with Olyphant in particular. I saw him years ago in **A Man Apart **and have had a thing for him ever since.
The show is much different than I thought it would be, much better…

We watch and like it - although I am starting to notice that some of the writing is a bit “too cool” for normal people.
How can I put my finger on it - sort of like everybody is in on the joke and instead of being threatening or scary, they all sort of just allude to the moment when someone is about to be shot through the head with a sly wink and a cute snarky comment.
There is some kind of moral or ethical vacuum in there, but can’t quite put it down in words.

Do you mean that no one’s reacting normally to all the people who’ve been killed? Eva did, in the last episode.

I’m enjoying the show a lot, but it seems that the Problem of the Week is always resolved rather abruptly when the episodes themselves tend to meander. A couple of dénouements left me saying “wait, what just happened?”

I’ve never read any Elmore Leonard, but Justified has a similar vibe to Get Shorty in that regard, that it has a “too-cool-for-word, sly, insider wink.” From what I’ve heard other say of Leonard’s work, this is sometimes his “tone?” “Schtick?” Depending on what he’s writing.

Nice to see W. Earl Brown again (Dan Dority from Deadwood). We’ve seen Ray McKinnon and the dead husband from the horse episode (forgot his name, the guy who played with the whore’s boobies in the bathtub). Anyone else?

We had a thunderstorm and lost power for a few minutes. I missed whatever happened between Wynona finding Wynn Duffy in her house and Raylan talking through the door at Dan.

Nice that Raylan didn’t have to shoot anyone, and nice that the guy in charge of the SWAT team was only a little bit assholish. I wondered how they’d get chicken in 15 minutes – nice that they showed that.

The scene in Art’s office with Vasquez, Art, and Raylan winding down was very well-written and realistic. It was almost like they didn’t have a script.

Wynona is clearly upset and a little scared to find a strange man in her kitchen. He says he’s there to make a presentation to her and her husband about a home security system. He gets menacingly close to her but finally leaves when she specifically asks him to. She then calls her husband, who rushes home, and denies knowing who Duffy is. She says she read his email and knows better. They fight over that, and he leaves angrily after she begs him to tell her what he’s up to.

The black female deputy marshal shows Raylan some prison booking photos of Dan, revealing the tatooed name “Simone” on his chest. Raylan asks who Simone was, and Dan gets choked up and says it was his daughter, whom he hasn’t seen in 15 years. He says, “God, do you think you could get her here? Could I really see her?” before dropping the act, scoffing and saying it was really the name of the first man he ever killed.

You knew FX immediately repeats new Justified episodes on Tuesday night, right?

I agree with your other comments about the episode. And I was glad to see some legal consequences to Raylan’s reckless and against-orders relationship with Eva.

Thanks for the synopsis!

Yeah, I knew about the repeats. Maybe I should record both showings. I think they repeat it on Friday or Saturday too – I’ll check that out.

I wonder how long Raylan will be able to stay away from Eva. It was dickish of him not to answer the phone. What’s it gonna hurt, now that Boyd’s out of jail?

What’s up with Wynona’s husband? I don’t think of real estate as an opportunity for criminal behavior.

IMDb.com will also, on the page for the show, give you the next air dates.

Real estate offers any number of opportunities for mischief:

For some reason, every time I see someone from Deadwood I think “Hey! It’s that guy from Deadwood!” But I never seem to remember it’s probably b/c of Tim Olyphant.

Speaking of Deadwood, I’ve totally forgotten the Harry Manning character, played by Brent Sexton, the dirty sheriff on Justified. Who was Harry Manning? IMDB has him in four or five episodes. Was he the guy running against Bullock for sheriff?

Yep - he was Tom Nuttall’s bartender who wanted to run against Bullock so he could be first deputy and then become the fire chief.

Trivia: The word “justified” showed up in 76 threads before this one.

Tense episode this week. I was worried for Toby, especially after the snitch described Duffy as “mercurial” – the two-dollar word for “crazy”. I suppose the only reason Toby didn’t call the cops was to protect Gary?

Ending in the box:

I liked the resolution – Raylan just watching all the shooting, and Gary helping.

I think I liked this episode better than some because there weren’t so many characters – just one story line, no distractions.

ETA: Anyone recognize the song on the jukebox at the start of the show? It sounded a bit like Mona Lisa but that’s not it. Was it Conway Twitty? Roy Orbison? Someone with a voice I’d like to hear more of, anyway.

I just checked on the DVR, and whoever was singing, it was neither Orbison nor Twitty. I didn’t recognize the song at all, although it was hard to pick it out of the dialog.

ETA: Was that Malik Yoba playing Toby?

It’s not listed in Yoba’s IMDB credits and the picture didn’t look right – Yoba has a narrower chin and he’s not so beefy, at least in the photo. I looked at Justified for this episode and it doesn’t say who played the guy.

I’m calling him Toby and it’s supposed to be T-Bone. Oops!

I’m gonna browse around and see if I can find out about the music – I really liked what little I could hear of it.

Something else I liked about this episode was that Raylan was less of a superman. I thought he might win that fight when he distracted the guy and got in the first punch.

The song was “Stand By Your Man,” wasn’t it? But not the best-known version by Tammy Wynette.

I really enjoyed the episode. I liked that Raylan lost his fight with the two guys outside the bar; he’s not Superman. He was drunk and a bit too overconfident, and he paid the price (although he got his hat back too easily at the end, IMHO).

I liked the Duffy character a lot. Smooth, a smartass, but amoral and not afraid to use violence for his own purposes (to say nothing of “mercurial”); reminded me a little of an evil Dennis Miller. A very Elmore Leonardesque character; I hope we’ll be seeing him again.

Couldn’t quite understand what happened in the shootout at the end. The players:

  1. Raylan
  2. The in-over-his-head realtor
  3. Duffy
  4. Duffy’s goon, the ex-boxer
  5. Duffy’s (putative) boss, who took the papers for the shopping mall
  6. Duffy’s boss’s goon

1 and 2 just wanted to leave, but an angry 3 drew his gun and told them to stay. 3 demanded payment from 5, who told him to calm down. 6 drew his gun and pointed it at 3. 4 then drew his gun. Then… I dunno. 6 shot 3? 4 got hit, too. I don’t think 5 was hit, was he? Was anyone killed, or don’t we know?

Best line, as Raylan steps on Duffy’s hand to keep him from grabbing a gun: “Hey… I’ve shot folks I liked for less.”
