Justified, Season Five starts tonight!

Except that Raylan getting revenge isn’t what Art would want. I guess he might feel differently after being shot, but Raylan not following the rules is what drove them apart. Raylan needs to bring Daryl in to get back in Art’s good graces, not kill him.

Exactly, that was the point of the talk between Tim and Raylan. Tim was pushing for a Raylan-style resolution, and for once, Raylan wasn’t on board. Instead he did it Art’s way. And like Daryl said, this is one of them time-will-tell situations.

It seemed like the Marshals bought Kendal’s story too easily. Wouldn’t the social worker’s (Amy Smart’s) version of events have conflicted with Kendal saying that Art drew first? I know she didn’t see what was going on in the hallway, but it seems she would have seen that Art drew and fired in reaction to the shot from the hall.

SimWife and I both said that - even shell shocked, she knows that the firing started from down the hall - she was in the hall, then Art pulled her back inside - then Art went out and the firing started - then after ducking back into the room, Art drew and returned fire.

Largely irrelevant, though, since Kendal’s story included admitting the possibility that Kendal shot first.

Kendall has no history of violence, unlike for example Daryl who has a massive history of violence. Why would the authorities believe his story–vs the alternative that he was making it up to coverup Daryl…

Well, of course we saw that Raylan wasn’t fooled. But it does seem implausible that he’d be the only one with doubts.

For one thing, I couldn’t buy Wendy’s reaction as she sat there listening to Kendal–the immediate reaction of complete belief in Kendal’s story. She’s certainly smart enough, and certainly knows her brother well enough, to have had some misgivings from the get-go. But that’s not the way it looked.

I don’t understand anything about Kendal. He hated and feared Danny, and yet he’s supposedly grieved and angered by his death. And the last couple of things Daryl has done for him were stealing the money Raylan gave him, and then savagely beating his mom. So now he’s throwing his life away for Daryl?

He’s clearly not stupid. He saw through his father in about ten seconds, and his father was not as obviously twisted as his uncles. So what’s his motivation? I know Daryl said it was time to step up and be a Crowe, but why would he want to be a Crowe?

Because now they’re blood brothers, silly!

Daryl might have threatened Kendall that Wendy would suffer if Kendall didn’t play along.

Also, he’s 14.

I think he’s afraid of the consequences of saying he doesn’t want to be a Crowe. He knows that he knows too much for Daryl to just let him go. And Kendal knows that for all Daryl’s talk about family, he isn’t above hurting his own. I think Kendal’s actions are purely self-preservation.

Wendy is surely in on the lie. Her reaction in the Marshal’s office was a performance. She knows very well who shot Art.

Is it possible that Kendall did shoot Art? It would be very unlikely for him to do so.

When I saw the preview last week that made it look like Art was just shot from ambush, I thought it might be Kendal. But when I saw the actual gunfight this week, no. It was a fairly prolonged exchange, with some very accurate shooting from Art’s assailant. It’s just too preposterous to believe that a kid in his first gunfight would be that cool under fire.

I hope she does know. It would be a violation of that character as it’s been established, to have her be so gullible.

But if she DOES know, then she’s implicitly agreeing to the incarceration of her son (in a juvenile offender facility) as a means of saving her brother. That seems unlikely.

Possibly, though, she’s playing for time until she can get some assurance of safety from Daryl’s revenge if she denounces him as the real shooter…?

I’ll be glad when this season is in the rear view mirror. It feels like the show has been all over the place – maybe too many places – literally and figuratively.

Detroit, Mexico, Texas, Kentucky, Florida, Ava’s first jail, the women’s prison, the men’s prison, the whore-trailer camp, Boyd’s bar, the Wynn-ebago, Hot Rod’s place, Avon Barksdale and his brother’s place (forgot those characters’ names), the Dixie Mafia motel, the two (three, four?) places the Crowes have hung out, the social worker’s house, Raylan’s place (did we ever see him at his place? I forget).

It was hard to get a sense of time as the action moved from one location to another, so it was hard to know if all those timely encounters made sense, like tonight, with Dewey showing up at Daryl’s place.

And again with Ava in that prison and another inmate dead. There was no lockdown after Judith’s murder? Those women all just continue to bunk together like they’re at a girls’ camp?

Individual scenes have been very effective but overall, it just feels like a mess.

So there is one more episode left in the season? How many and whose dead bodies are we going to see in it? Darryl, Jimmy, the Mexicans?

The way things have been going for Ava, I’m afraid she may not make it out of prison. That angle would certainly make for a truly ‘clean slate’ for Boyd.

Even though Jimmy killed the old man, hoping Carl will be the one to go instead.

Wynn Duffy is pushing his luck but such a great character I’d hate to see him go.

Suicide or murder? Either would be fine with me. Boyd feeling guilt about something would be interesting to see.

Art - he can go, we already have his replacement.

Cold! (I would miss Nick Searcy. He has a way with a line.)

Once again, special guest star: Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens. Guy’s a guest-star in his own show.

Yeah, I think Ava’s only getting out of prison feet-first - if we’re lucky. If we’re not, she’s not getting out, and this godforsaken plotline will continue into next season.

I don’t know where all this is going. Maybe Boyd will go nuts after Ava’s eventual and well-deserved shivving. Maybe next season is Boyd trying to survive with no friends, money, or backup, with both Detroit & Mexico wanting him dead.

Whatever it is, throw Boyd and Raylan together a lot, PLEASE! Those guys are gold.
