Justified, Season Five starts tonight!

The producers agree, and plan to end it after next season. (The sixth.) Link

Will Justified go into syndication? Seems like it’ll be hard to do, since episodes have to be watched in order.

It will likely go to the 21st-century version, streaming. It used to be the golden number for syndication was 100 episodes (close to 5 seasons), but all the cable shows have short seasons of 12 eps or so. The model may have changed nowadays…

Oh please, if you can’t tell the difference between the violence level in the first couple seasons, and this season premiere…

I mean really? Blowing holes through people’s heads with the camera fully focused on it…a dude chopping people up with a chain saw for the sick pleasure of it…

It just seems like they shifted focus from the strength of the characters’ story to the nasty things they’re willing to do in advancement of their own agendas.

For me, no thanks. Violence is naturally going to be part of it, but I’m not into violence for the sake of violence. Guy gets shot in the face for crossing a criminal? OK - but I’d rather not feel like the blood may splatter on my face. What’s wrong with off-camera, or out of focus? I’ll keep my head firmly planted in the sand with respects to the nastier bits of criminal life, thankyouverymuch. This is entertainment, not “Criminal Docu-Drama Educational Series” for the mentally insane.

It’s just my opinion, and opinions are like assholes, so I’m sure mine stinks just as much as yours. We’ll have to wait for the ratings to see whether anyone shares our respective opinions.

Okay, I recognized Wood Harris – Avon Barksdale in The Wire – but who played his brother? I’ve seen him somewhere but he’s not listed in the credits for this episode at IMDB.

The kid that Loretta was involved with – was he the son of a cop? Art said something to Raylan about a cop blaming Raylan for getting his son involved with drugs.

It’ll be interesting to see how/if Boyd manages to get Ava sprung.

In case you hadn’t discovered it yet Justified Wiki is The Source for cast details long before IMDb updates things.

My understanding is that Loretta and the boyfriend (Derek?) sold pot to the cop’s son.

Thanks! He’s from Homicide:Life on the Street. I had no idea he and Wood were brothers.

Dewey Finn, thanks – that makes sense, since we didn’t see that cop again in the episode. I kept waiting for him to show up and do something about Derek.

Not a bad episode, although the actors seemed to be still settling back into the show’s groove and their roles. It got better toward the end of the episode, and I think we’ll see more steadiness and better plot development in next week’s ep. And no blood and gore, which should please our more squeamish comrade.

Just caught this episode.

Really? I loved that episode for it’s essential…Elmore-ness  Great dialogue - Raylan and Loretta, Raylan and Loretta’s Counselor/Amy Smart, the betrayed trooper and the Latvian hot wife*, hot wife and Boyd in the stairwell, Raylan in the showdowns with the black drug dealers and the redneck druglord, etc. Just great stuff. Plot-wise it was more of a setup episode for things to come, but if I get to hear that kind of dialogue and see that kind of acting, I will take it!

*anyone recognize her? It hit me afterwards - there was a car ad set in Europe maybe a year or two ago; a car (Fiat? VW?) drives past and she was featured, head turning to look after it - short hair with much more of an Audrey Hepburn vibe vs. here. It got some attention here I think, simply due to her. She is sculpturally beautiful.

Ah - here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfQPdNY3bXs

For the Acura ZDX - she is really beautiful. And she reaches up to tuck her hair back behind her ear - kinda Keira Knightly-ish - swoon.

Karolina Wydra - apparently she’s been on House and a few other things as well. Kinda has that Famke Janssen thing going - successful model with somewhat of an accent getting some cool acting roles…

Sorry - carry on discussing Justified…

They did beat up and kill that one guy (“You wanna go Seal Team Six here? Tightest grouping wins.”) towards the beginning.

That might just be the highlight of the series!

I was happy to see a little bit of Erica Tazel as Rachel Brooks this week.
I don’t think she was in the season opener, was she?

Now Jacob Pitts as Tim Gutterson needs to get some good screen time.

I have to say that I’m not buying Michael Rapaport’s character yet.

I am. I was skeptical at first but I think he’s doing a good job.

I’m warming to him. I think the writers are giving him good stuff and he’s trying hard to shed those earlier roles where he was weird if nothing else. I do keep flashing on Dick Ritchie, though.

Whoever is playing the owner of the mansion is doing a good job of being a ruthless creep. I enjoyed this week’s episode. Whup ass, Raylan!

Nah, when Raylan killed the hit-man dressed as a cop who was taking away Boyd & Ava, he said, “Damn I hope I got that right.” That has got to be the series highlight to date, and the highlight of whatever two shows bracket “Justified” as well, 'cause it’s just that good. Bonus points for great Boyd/Ava/Raylan banter just before.

“Seal Team Six” was entertaining, but no highlight of this series could exclude Raylan, and should probably include Boyd as well.

Amy Smart is becoming an interesting character. They’re sure making her out to be an ambiguously sneaky character.
