Skip, Thanks for the email. I would’ve missed this thread otherwise. Count me in for some of the fun (not all of the fun, I don’t want to be a hog). Though, Sunday might be out, it is my Dad’s B-day, and we don’t have plans for it yet, but we may.
No schedule yet. Here’s what I was thinking, though:
Friday Night
Dinner at some place where we don’t have to yell to hear one another; however, since we can’t control the noise levels, any bar & grill will do. We could also see Shai’tan if y’all are up for a magic show. (Of course, that’d leave out the underage dopers, as Shai’tan mentioned.)
Saturday
Lunch or brunch. Last time we ate at California Pizza Kitchen on the Plaza. I still like the Plaza idea, but I’m willing to go wherever. Since it’s usually not too warm during the 11 - noonish hours, we might even try finding a place to eat outside.
After lunch/brunch, maybe hit a local attraction (and duck if it hits back). Last time we bothered the nice folks at the Nelson. This year… maybe the Liberty Memorial? The Zoo (might be too warm, plus you walk a lot)?
Dinner: anywhere for dinner. Last time saw us at the City Market for a fun bar and grill place. Hey you! suggested it, I believe, and it turned out pretty well. We could also do the bowling/minigolf idea and eat the greasy and guilt-inducing food offered there.
Sunday
We hit Shawnee Mission Park and did a cookout that last Dopefest. I’m all for doing it again, if you’d like, because it’s nice, easy and relaxing. Any other ideas are welcome–I’m certainly not married to the cookout idea. (A few years back, thanks to the suggestion of Gary T, we ate a tasty buffet brunch at Figlio’s. We could do that or something similar, too.)
Our list has grown!

sweet! i knew living at the bottom of the bridge would be handy one day!
I guess I’ll request work off for the 15th, then.
How about lunch, then bowling/minigolf?
Baker mentioned a tour of the Steamboat Arabia. I’m not sure what everyone’s funds are, but we could do lunch on Saturday, hit the Arabia and then meet later that night for bowling/minigolf.
The prices for the Arabia are located ovar har.
Hey!
Sounds like fun, I will do my best to be there!
Excellent, The Unkempt One! We look forward to seeing you there.
Okay, here’s the plan for Sunday:
I’ve reserved Shelter #11 at Shawnee Mission Park (same as the one a coupla years ago). Here’s a link to the map of the park, including a listing of all the shelters. We have the shelter from 8:00 until 2:00, but I won’t plan on being there until probably between 10:30 and 11:00. We’ll bring the burgers, dogs, buns and probably chips. Please bring your food and drink of choice.
If you click on the “Printer Friendly Version” graphic, you’ll get a much larger map in pdf form.
Okay, that sounds like Mission Bowl. That sounds good to me. So, Saturday after brunch/lunch? Looks like mini-golf will be $6.00 per adult and $5 for kiddos under 12.
Bowling is $3.50 per adult per game, with shoe rentals costing $2.25 per person (no getting away with just wearing socks; looks like they require everyone to wear bowling shoes).
So where are we lunching or brunching on Saturday?
Auntie Em suggested that we eat nearby–to the bowling alley, that is–at a new joint called Bob-B-Que (I may not have the name entirely right). I’ve never been, but it’s certainly an idea.
What I was thinking, though, is that maybe we should meet for lunch, go some place (maybe the Arabia) afterward, and then break for a few hours (so people can rest if need be) and then meet up again that night for the bowling and mini-golf. If we’re hungry, we can do the good old greasy bowling alley food.
How’s that sound?
Also, any suggestions on where to meet and eat Friday night? Got a fun place you like?
I just saw Shai’tan’s magic show. HOLY CRAP!
We need to go to this
Well, we haven’t decided on Friday night. I’m game. (Plus, I read your thread about the show; it sounds pretty fun.)
One more try, this is the last time I’ll grovel. Is anyone else interested in sharing a motel/hotel room for this fest? I promise not to snore!
How’s this for a schedule?
Friday
Dinner and meet-up at the Quaff. Afterward, we’ll stick around for Shai’tan’s magic act. (Those of us who can, that is.)
Saturday
Lunch (maybe at City Market–any suggestions?) and then walk over to the Arabia. Afterward we’ll break and meet up again that evening at Mission Bowl for mini-golf, bowling and greasy food.
Sunday
Meet at Shawnee Mission Park at around 11:00 or so. (Probably the earliest I’ll be there is 11:00, but we have the shelter from 8 - 2.) We can start the food closer to noonish and gab and chat. For those of you who want to explore Shawnee Mission Park, feel free to do so. There’s even a nature trail close to our shelter for those who want to take a 6 mile (roundtrip) walk.
Saturday’s Lunch:
Here’s a list of City Market restaurants. If nothing else is chosen, I suggest we eat at Minsky’s (great KC pizza) or Hien Vuong (Vietnamese) or the Blue Nile Ethiopian joint. But I figured pizza would appeal to the widest group.
Minsky’s at the City Market is pretty group-friendly.
Rock on. Great minds and all, Hey you!.
I’ve received a missive from a lurker saying that the lack of dates in the later posts might be confusing to some. So, just in case (I’ve also added times):
Friday - July 14th - 7:00 P.M.
Dinner and meet-up at the Quaff. Afterward, we’ll stick around for Shai’tan’s magic act. (Those of us who can, that is.)
Saturday - July 15th - 12:00 P.M. (Lunch and Arabia) & 6:00 P.M. (Dinner and bowling/golf)
Lunch in the City Market at Minsky’s, and then walk over to the Arabia. Afterward we’ll break and meet up again that evening at Mission Bowl for mini-golf, bowling and greasy food.
Sunday - July 16th - 11:30ish A.M.
Meet at Shawnee Mission Park–Shelter #11–at around 11:30 or so. (Probably the earliest I’ll be there is 11:00, but we have the shelter from 8 - 2.) We can start the food closer to noonish and gab and chat. For those of you who want to explore Shawnee Mission Park, feel free to do so. There’s even a nature trail close to our shelter for those who want to take a 6 mile (round-trip) walk.
