I have invited him to come and share his perspective. Here are some snippets of what he said. In no particular order. This might be a troll, so…

From what I remember: He seemed to have managed to get a few good hits in, but overall his fighting was what you might expect from someone claiming to have been trained by Jesus. I… can’t really bring myself to watch it again, so I can’t say any more.

Yeah, the “I was trained by Jesus.”, the stilted way he talked, the way he rocked back and forth, the way his style was all fluttery and expansive with no sense of guard at all told me that the guy was not mentally right. I mean there are A LOT of clues that the guy isn’t mentally right.

I have been in similar situations. When I was teaching a class many years back, a “kung-fu” guy came in and was watching. (This was in a college gym.) He was in uniform, and I noticed him watching and asked if he would like to join the class, which was pretty informal - just me and some of my brown belts sparring. He said No, because it wouldn’t do any good - judo didn’t work against his style because his ch’i caused him to stick to the floor and made him unthrowable.

Well.

As is common amongst judo students, all my brown belts’ eyes lit up like sharks on Christmas morning who find a hemophiliac under the tree, and there was a general clamor of “Ooh! Ooh! Can I play with the new toy if I promise not to break it?” But, rank hath its privileges, and I got first shot. I didn’t kill him, I didn’t even hurt him very much, but after he got up he said he hadn’t been ready. So we gave him a chance to get ready, and meditate or whatever, and my senior brown belt got the next crack at Bruce Lee v2.0. Also not a ringing triumph for the power of the ch’i, and the brown belt was somewhat less concerned for the well-being of the gentleman in question.

You’re lucky that guy didn’t make you kiss his Converse. You never know who is going to come into your dojo.

The difference is that now there is a huge community of martial artists who are all connected by the internet, and when something like this happens, it can be assured that those who do take the art seriously and have moral integrity will do the right thing and tell everybody about it.

Pfft. One local news anchor’s breathless “just wait until you see this shocking footage” = 1,000,000 responsible martial artists’ “no, seriously, most of us aren’t like that”

Not really - In paging backwards through the thread there appears to be one person posting claiming to be present at the scene of the fight and also claiming the stompee survived and was pulled out of the dumpster by the police the next day. The police have the tape and the ID of the instructor. It’s up to them at this point. If it is determined he did survive I’m not sure what the authorities can do given the time that has passed.

I really wish I wouldn’t have watched that video. I mean, I’ve seen a guy die from a car crash that happened right in front of me, and I’m not as upset as what I witnessed in that video. It was hours ago that I saw it, and it still depresses the hell out of me when I think about it. So needlessly brutal and potentially fatal. And not a single person did anything to help. I hope something can be done legally to at least the instructor and the asshole who beat and possibly killed the guy. It would be nice to think of them rotting in prison for the rest of their lives.

So it’s not strange that police ignore investigating a beaten up and possibly severely injured man, just because he is poor? That sounds like a very corrupt police force.
