Maybe it’s like saying ‘a plague o’ both your houses?’

I don’t get the comparison. Please explain.

I hope I can live my life in such a way that no one wants to gloat over my dead or dying body.

A good start on that noble goal would be not popping the corks in champagne bottles when you learn other people are terminally ill.
(Noted that you yourself haven’t exactly done that in this thread.)
That was my point, really. I may not like the guy but I can’t dance to this one.

I was being flippant; nothing more. The phrase ‘a cancer on this board’ struck me as oddly poetic and very much like a curse: “‘A cancer on this board!’ quoth he.”
I’m not feeling the joy, myself, even though I never was a fan.
Ah, got it! I’ve just confirmed my comment to QED in another thread that occasional stupidity is hopefully a forgivable crime.

No fears - my comment wasn’t germane to the topic at hand.
Oh, wait, this is the pit, right? Sorry. My fucking comment wasn’t etc.

Really? Why?

Good people and bad people get brain tumors in equal numbers as far as I can tell, and celebrating it when the bad people get it doesn’t make up for anything they did or for what happened to the others, so what the fuck is the point of doing this?
I don’t think Novak is any kind of a good guy, but suggesting he deserved this by being a conversative or even by being a total asshole speaks poorly of the cheering section. I wonder if the Prince of Darkness ever wished anybody would die of a brain tumor. Or maybe he’s got a little more class than that.

Hey! Don’t get carried away, here!!
I really dislike Novak, in a way I never disliked Tony Snow, but I’m not happy he has cancer. If Joe Wilson had punched him in the face, I might have been happy, but Cancer’s not something someone “deserves” just because they’re a jerk.
But today I smile. I may think I’m lost, but compared to you miserable motherfuckers I am an innocent babe, safe in his mother’s arms. I am still a good enough person that I would never take or joy in such misfortune, especially over something as petty as political differences.

Scylla, you might take notice that some other posters here feel the same way about this thread as you. And we didn’t even need climb up on that horse. How’s the weather up there?

There would be a nice view if it weren’t for all the smug pollution. Smells like farts.

One of my tin foil hat theories (more of a hope than a theory) is that it’s not entirely coincidental that Novak “broke his hip in the shower” soon after the Plame outing. But, he probably broke his hip in the shower.
No joy in his tumor. No real grieving either.
I don’t believe in karma. Too many bad things happen to good people.
But if this is true … it’s terrible. My sympathies to him and his family.
I say “if this is true” because so far this story seems … kinda odd. So far we just have him making this announcement on his own. Aren’t there usually doctors who make comments and such after these sorts of announcements? I remember when Kennedy’s tumor was announced, the hospital made a statement and whatnot. Here, things are awfully lowkey.
Woo-woo conspiracy theory: he’s just trying to weasel out of the consequences of his hit-and-run. Considering the friends in high places Novak has, maybe he’s able to get some backup for a fakeout! That would probably take some serious maneuvering, but if anyone’s connected enough for it, he is.
Back to reality: like many others, I have plenty of contempt for Bob Novak. I think he’s a first-rate shitheel whose sleazy decisions put at least one CIA operative’s job, if not her life, at risk purely for reasons of political treachery and sucking up to the Bush administration. Not to mention possibly putting her contacts in harm’s way.
But I don’t wish cancer on anyone, so I hope if this is really a tumor, that it turns out to be benign and not malignant. I’m not one of those ‘dancing on graves’ types. Too empathetic and scared of death myself to get any vengeful pleasure out of the suffering of others, even the evil ones.

Woo Woo my ass. The* instant * I saw this I knew this was some weasel move to try and wiggle out of the consequences of his hit and run. He’s in some seriously deep shit with the hit and run and he’s scrambling to try and make it go away. I’d want the MRI and an affidavit by two impartial doctors believe I’ll believe a word of this self proclaimed “illness”.
Well, Astro, I was covering my ass with the “woo woo.” A solid 30-40% of me doubts his story. I’ve just been slammed before for being a conspiracy nut so I must preface this theory with the knowledge that it’s pretty out there, even for a raging cynic like me.
It’s eight hours later and we still haven’t heard a thing from any hospital representative or medical expert – or indeed, anyone other than Novak or his representative. And there’s been no biopsy on the tumor, so hell, it may turn out to be benign even if it does exist. I’m still putting this in the “unconfirmed” category, myself. I mean what would be the one thing that would excuse his hit & run? A brain tumor! And he has one! Allegedly.
Again: I really hope these doubts are right, for a number of reasons, first and foremost because then he wouldn’t have a potentially fatal or at least extremely debilitating disease, and that would be wonderful for him and his family.
Second because then I wouldn’t have to feel sorry for a putz like Novak the way I do right now.
And third because the truth coming out about such a heinous lie would be totally awesome.
If he’s faking, it’ll come out. And once it does he’ll be ruined. Even his supporters will desert him. He won’t ever publish another column or be on another TV show.
I don’t think Novak is so stupid that he thinks he can fake something like this and get away with it indefinitely.
WSJ:

I’ll observe that even this miserable little thread contains a few gems. Personally, I’m sick enough to chuckle over jailhouse humor. And I think Scylla’s plea is worthy of note.
Some rejoice when truly vile individuals whom they do not know and are not directly affected by are put to death. I think less of such people.
To wish serious harm on another individual for purposes of revenge is a form of evil, though there are worse varieties.
I enjoy misplaced modifier humor as much as the next guy, but I don’t think you can parse the sentence that way, given the “people with” part of the noun phrase. What in the hell would “people with cancer on this board” mean if “cancer on this board” is the noun phrase? And who says “cancer on” in that context? Weak and reaching, if you ask me.
My point was that “The scorn and disrespect for people with cancer on this board is sad and unsettling” was a non sequitur. Novak hasn’t been diagnosed with cancer - or if he has, we don’t yet know about it.
And at the time you said that (post #10), only one indirect reference had been made to that possibility in this thread (post #6), and it hadn’t evinced scorn or disrespect.
IOW, you were an idiot, but I decided to wisecrack instead of rubbing your face in your idiocy. Sorry that approach bothered you; hope this repairs some of the damage.
RT, the thing is, this is like the third thread of this nature. See the one about Tony Snow, for example. So yes, people have actually reveled in other people having cancer.
