More than 40 countries have their own version of “Pop Idol”, or as it’s known in the U.S., “American Idol” (which means Simon Cowell is a very, very rich man). Recently, a young woman named Valentina Hasan, performing on the Bulgarian show “Music Idol,” had her own take (in Engrish) on a classic pop song she called “Ken Lee.”
For those of you who were wondering what exactly she was singing, it was Mariah Carey’s remake of the classic Nilsson song “Without You.”
I always tell my kids that they have to pay attention in English class if they want to go on Music Idol and not make complete fools of themselves, as MANY MANY MANY people do in the first couple weeks of the show. (People make fools of themselves on American Idol, too, but the “total butchering of the English language” adds a special dimension to Bulgarian Idol.)
Now I get to add: and you don’t want people ALL OVER THE WORLD to see you making a fool of yourself.
Thanks, YouTube!
ETA: BTW, the stamp graphic at the end of the clip that says “HE” means “NO”.
This reminds me- what ever happened to that “I Am Your Brother” guy from the American show? I was certain he was going to be a big novelty like William Hung. I mean, if Ken Lee can have a fan base…
