Kentucky beats LSU!!!

What a nice night for us long-suffering UK football fans. For the first time since before my 1st birthday we beat the number 1 team in the country. Almost makes me forget sitting in Commonwealth Stadium and seeing Mark Higgs be stopped 4 consecutive plays from 1 yard out. Almost makes me forget all the times when we have wrestled defeat from the jaws of victory.

I would like to thank the LSU receivers for being unable to catch open passes.

As a UK alum who was a student during both the “Bluegrass Miracle” and the seven-overtime game against Arkansas (I stood in the student section for the entire game, was stone sober the entire time and still don’t remember walking home), this is pretty sweet.

The question now is, can we turn around and beat Florida at home next week?

And OSU beats CAL. #1 and #2 go down the same weekend (following of course the UCS loss last week!). I was supposed to be down there watching the game but had something come up. I’m pissed I missed it.

College football is WACKY this year!

Wow. Is this the year of upsets or what? This week, #1 and #2 lost. Last week, USC lost. And so on…

My reaction was, “How can LSU, since the Billy Cannon days, be #1?”

What have they been rated the last 30 years?

So this means South Florida is probably going to be #3. Wow. Just in time for Rutgers to play them. And then the next week is vs. #8 WVU. Yikes.

That OSU-Cal game should have gone into overtime. That was an amazingly boneheaded play by the QB.

Perhaps this shows how…GASP…absolutely worthless the ranking system is? And that maybe the only way to crown a true champion would be with something wacky like…oh I don’t know…playoffs? Nah, who would want a legitimate means of naming a college football champion?

Communist! The ONLY proper way to pick a champion is to let sportswriters vote on it!

I mean, why bother playing Super Bowl 3, when EVERY journalist could have told you the Colts were way better. Who ya gonna believe, smart guys like Skip Bayless and Mike Lupica, or that lying scoreboard?

In fact, I don’t understand the point of March Madness at all. Why not just have Duke and and few other schools play exhibition games and then take a vote to see who looked strongest? Why be SURE when you can rely on guesswork instead???

WOO HOO HOO!!!

I don’t think it’s completely sunk in yet. I just don’t know how to process UK football wins. I … wow. Just, wow.

Wait. Does this mean Ohio State, with its weak-assed schedule (Youngstown State, Akron, Kent), is going to be number 1?

What bullshit that is. Cowardice should not be rewarded.

Ya know, it’s posts like this that make me realize how crazy some people out in the world are.

Playoffs in college football? What, you think the students have time for that? Don’t you get that they already have a hard enough time balancing their studies and athletic life?

I can’t believe you would ask these kids to play yet ANOTHER game(s). I’m sure if you asked each and every one, they would say TO A STUDENT that they prefer having a bunch of sportswriters (many of whom didn’t play sports at that high of a level) to decide who number 1 is each year. ( smilie included for the sarcasm detecting impaired)

Also, I just want to note that last year, OSU (not that stupid “the OSU”) beat USC when they were number one, and this year, beat number two. BRING IT ranked teams, BRING IT! I can’t wait untill Civil War so we can go ahead and knock off those stupid Quackers down in Eugene.

That was exactly my initial thought. I’m officially cheering for USF the rest of the way…I hate this system.

Football is the only college sport that doesnt utilize a playoff system.

And are you fucking serious? Balancing “studies” and their athletic lives? Do you honestly think these players have to put in even a third of the work as the rest of their classmates in order to skate through college?

And I can’t tell if your sarcasm was implied for the entire post or just that last part.

It’s not cowardice. OSU had a home and home with Texas the last 2 years. They start a home and home with USC next year. It’s just an off year. They did schedule an away game with Washington, which looked much better when they scheduled it.

If USC, LSU and Cal had taken care of the weak-assed teams on their schedule, they’d still be ahead of OSU.
Edited to add: I think this season shows that there’s a lot more balance in college football, and you really can’t take any team for granted.

What a bonehead play by the Cal QB, throwing away a sure tying FG. I’m sure Oregon State fans will cherish this one forever, a true Bear-Beaver classic.

Ohio State deserves to be number 1. Mind you, it may not last a week. Michigan State has beaten a number one OSU team in Columbus before (1998) so don’t be shocked if it happens again.

What a nice birthday present from the alma mater. It isn’t often that I long for my crappy little med school apartment at the corner of Woodland and Euclid, but I’d have given anything to be back there last night.

I was at Keeneland yesterday, and there were LSU fans everywhere. The ones I talked to were nice people–hate to see them go home disappointed. But not really.

Wait…you’re comparing LSU’s game with Kentucky to Ohio State’s games with Akron, Youngstown State and Kent? Did you notice Kentucky’s ranking, by any chance?

And I think Appalachian State showed us all we need to know about the Big 10.

Congrats to Kentucky fans, by the way. The Wildcats are having a helluva season.

Ohio State’s schedule has almost always been heavier toward the latter end of the season. The last two years were a bit of an exception–those two games with Texas were awesome, even though they were a general anomaly. We still have a game against pretty much every tough Big 10 opponent upcoming. The Buckeyes will eventually be tested to see if they deserve this ranking.

I’m not sure if I want my team to be #1 this season, given how it’s been a total jinx so far.

By whom?
