Get rid of the strawberry. At least with the vanilla you can add chocolate syrup and get something edible.
Just so. Strawberry is the odd man out for me. Works out pretty well with my wife. She eats strawberry but no chocolate, I eat chocolate but no strawberry. I don’t think I’ve ever had Neapolitan that had good tasting strawberry.
I still call it Metropolitan because I’m weird that way.
Strawberry shakes and bowls of ice cream have been my favorite since childhood. The best has pieces of strawberry in it. DQ Shakes are like that.
I voted to eliminate vanilla.
I like the Italian version better and would change my answer based on that. I know someone who only eats one flavor out of the box at a time.
Get rid of the strawberry
Had to get rid of the chocolate.
My thinking was of rating what I would prefer of the resulting 3 combos.
Chocolate/Strawberry: Not so much. Like them both solo but they both get dragged down when paired with the other.
Chocolate/Vanilla: Okay, but they don’t really compliment each other.
Vanilla/Strawberry: Good combo. A light vanilla sweetness can compliment a strawberry very well.
You can haul away the lot of them.
It probably exists, but I’ve never encountered Neapolitan that was made from quality ice cream.
mmm
No contest. As a child I’d sigh and reconcile myself to eating the strawberry portion when I came to it, it being by far my least favorite. And between then and now I moved from sigh to absolute NOPE. I don’t like the taste of strawberry in ice cream, syrup, soda, or umm fresh strawberries. Just no.
This would be my vote, but imagine if we went back to original cherry? Black Forest ice cream.
I concur!
Ordinarily, I’d prefer strawberry over vanilla… but the Aldi store brand Neapolitan, which is what I eat most often, actually has really good vanilla in it, while the strawberry is merely OK (and chocolate, of course, is chocolate). So I think that my vote is to ditch the strawberry.
That said, I didn’t know that the original was cherry, vanilla, and pistachio-- I love pistachio when I can (very rarely) find it, and cherry is also excellent. Is there some country with a red, brown, and green flag? I’d get all of my ice cream from there, if there were.
This. I love a good vanilla ice cream, and most vanilla ice cream isn’t good.
Agree completely. I annoy my family by always creating a Neapolitan three-pick at ice-cream joints rather than, say, a chocolate medley. Even high-end strawberry never works, but there are so many other good red flavours around to boost your selection.
Go to hell, strawberry. Seriously, if you have ice cream in a bowl, and this includes chocolate and vanilla, what the hell do you need any strawberry for???
There’s a number of major national brands that have pistachio. Maybe where you’re at it’s hard to find, but here I can find Ben and Jerry’s and Haagen-Dazs at the very least, plus a few fancier gelato-type brands that come in something that looks more like a jar. (The Haagen-Dazs is by far my favorite, just being sweet cream ice cream – not vanilla – and pistachios. It actually tastes like pistachios. The Ben and Jerry’s is good for what it is, but it tastes overwhelmingly of almond to me, not pistachio. It’s good pistachio ice cream if you want almond ice cream.)
ETA: Oh, and bye bye strawberry in the poll. This “original Neapolitan” mentioned – isn’t that just spumoni?
I’m not a fan of strawberry in most forms so it’s not a hard choice for me
I love a good strawberry ice cream.
I’ve never had good strawberry ice cream in Neapolitan ice cream. It usually tastes vaguely chemical, and not at all of strawberry. I don’t eat it. So I’d leave it out.
That being said, a mix of good strawberry ice cream and good chocolate ice cream would be awesome.
Yup. Just bring that one back.
Here is a question. Is the American Neapolitan ice cream based on sundae flavors i.e. vanilla ice cream with chocolate/strawberry topping. If so, wouldn’t it make since to replace strawberry with either caramel or butterscotch flavored ice cream?
