King of the Nerds wasn't horrible

Yay!

I have to say that, each episode where someone was nerded off, I’ve liked the person who left more during that time than in earlier episodes. Except Moo, 'cause I always liked her. But the others…I found myself missing Virgil, lol. Ok, and not Alana. Sorry, but she was either written or edited just…unlikeable, which makes me sad, but…yeah. The others, even the annoying ones, came off pretty cool, eventually. And part of me wonders if Virgil deliberately blew the last move in the dance, because the other girls though they’d work better together than with him. Somehow I could see him doing that; as he said, “I can always go back to MIT.”

Finally saw it. That was exciting!

Genevieve deserves to win it and only partially because she has the hardest name to spell. If only she wasn’t such an immature crybaby. I don’t know what surprised me more: the fact that Alana was married or the fact that Gen is 28. 28!!!

I hope one of the girls win. Even despicable, full-of-herself Danielle. Just to show up the producers for naming the she “King” of the Nerds.

I also hope they think up more twists and fun and appropriate challenges next season.

I cut Gen some slack for the crying. Reality TV isn’t Real life. She’s stuck in a stressful (albeit fun) situation, cut off from any support network, with editing seizing on any sort of drama. It’s pretty standard for reality TV to provoke some crying. Also, let’s not forget she’s a nerd, so not necessarily the most socially adept / emotionally normal. (I say with all due respect as a fellow nerd.)

Anyway, I was thrilled that she won the challenge. Sad to see Moo go, wish it was Danielle, but I hope Gen wins it all. That idea with the NES cartridges and the rulers was great out of the box thinking…

BTW, I do enjoy this show, but I preferred Beauty & the Geek, which was very similar, but I think better overall. My wife agrees. If anyone who enjoys KotN hasn’t seen B&tG, try tracking it down, if it’s available anywhere. Worth a watch.

Spoiler boxing the final result, just in case…
Well, that was some kinda bullshit. You’re voting for the person who was such a complete failure the entire season that she skated through the whole show because no one bothered to look at her as a threat? That’s your inspirational nerd?? “Keep your head down, fuck up every time you’re asked to do something, and fail your way to success” is the message you’re cool with?

Fuck that…Genevieve was the clear winner here.

I think the only way this could have ended worse is if Curtis said “We’ve tabulated your votes, and decided we don’t care about them. We’re just going to give to win to…ehh, Alana”.

Also, Danielle? Wow, you’re the most pathetically sore loser I’ve ever seen. I hope that was in some way taken insanely out of context to give you a bitch edit, but you came off really, really, really bad there. And btw, I knew the answer was Nolan Bushnell before they gave any multiple choice answers, so neener.
I agree with everything Hal said in his spoiler box. More comments below.

Celeste wasn’t a bad person but she was the worst nerd. She didn’t know freaking 12 parsecs?! She should have been eliminated just for that. Genevieve beat the comic book nerd at comics books and the engineering nerd at engineering. She was clearly the winner here. Bad call by the nerds who voted.

Still, despite my disappointment with the ending, I really enjoyed this show. looking froward to a second season.

I too endorse Hal Briston’s remarks, and the denouement seriously pissed me off. Firstly, ending on a popularity contest? I thought one of the main points of the series was to eliminate popularity as a criteria for success. I would have much rather seen another skill-based Nerd-off. Not to mention, basically all three eliminated finalists had a better record of achievement than the eventual winner.

Regarding the Nerd Bowl, “from very difficult to ludicrously difficult?” Hell, I’m a complete piker and I got five out of seven right, including who invented Pong. Kids these days…

And enough crying, already. Gaaaah, even Ivan was getting teary-eyed, FFS.

With all that said, I’ll be watching the next series. I’m helplessly hooked.

Dammit, Ivan. Your two-second reboot during the maze cost you the title.

The left-hand rule WILL work to get you out of the maze, but its NOT THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY. Open your damn eyes, and use them!

Basically, I stopped watching when he left. I went in the other room, and listened to all the bitching. And the “ludicrously” difficult trivia… wasn’t.

Good series, bad finale. Grump, Grump, Grump.

Ah yes, the Maze of Terror, where Genevieve once again used the best strategy possible.

You’re in a maze. You must not be the last one out of the maze. You know this maze will not be insanely difficult – there will only be a handful of possible paths. Should you try and be the first one out? No – you’re putting yourself in potential danger there.

Genevieve simply followed Danielle. If Danielle was correct, then yay for Gen – she comes in second. But if Danielle was wrong at any point, then Gen would know it as soon as she saw Danielle turning around. Gen could then immediately turn around, and she would then be in the lead.

Another winning strategy (even if she didn’t clearly mean to use it) by the actual deserving winner.

I thought that Danielle would have to win so that I can see her pink head grow larger and larger and explode with undeserved ego. But I saw her pink head go poof anyway. Yay!

And, like I said before the finale, Gen deserved to win.

I’ll 4th it, or 5th maybe. It totally should have been Gen who won. She took risks and fought tooth and nail to win the game. Celeste just kept her head down and didn’t lose, she didn’t win, she just didn’t lose. Bah!

Celeste didn’t deserve the title for one reason: she couldn’t convert 7/8 to decimals!

I’m not usually one for reality shows (I pretty much only enjoy Survivor, and watch Amazing Race with the fam) but I stuck with this one. I thought some parts were tinged with a bit too much “nerds are losers, we need to prop 'em up” sort of thinking, and didn’t like some of the casting (Genevive and Danielle were both drama queens, Alana was horrendously annoying) but overall wasn’t bad.

But man, going with a Survivor-style jury vote at the end by surprise? That’s kinda bogus. Social skills are the antithesis of these contestants, and making it a surprise (rather than something you need to take into consideration, which I love about Survivor) makes it kinda bull. Celeste basically played a very good game of Survivor - she made an alliance, was never weak enough her own team wanted to get rid of her, and was never strong enough that the other team wanted to get rid of her for being a threat. And she pissed off less people than Gen. So she wins! Dumb.

And yeah, those questions were pretty easy… I consider myself decently well-rounded in multiple aspects of nerd-dom but expert in none, and I got them all. (How do you not know what 7/8s in decimal is!?) The questions in the superhero round (which were almost all about relatively obscured Golden Age stuff) were much more difficult.

Yup, I’ve been behind Gen to win for weeks, and it sucked to see her lose a popularity contest.

It was delightful to see Danielle lose, though…

Another one who knew Bushnell without hearing the choices. (though I did not know the other guy, Alcorn) “5th Gen and later…” sorry Danielle, there were nerds before you.

I was embarrassed to miss the Wolverine question. I thought it was Giant-sized X-men. Incredible Hulk? huh. did not know that.

I’ll still be watching next season, even though they crowned a “King of the somewhat nerd-like.”

You could figure out 7/8s even without the math since you know it’s almost but not quite 1 so only one choice could have been the answer.

I will admit I did not know who invented Pong but I did know Wolverine started in the Hulk (didn’t know the issue number though).

Finally saw it, and add me to the list of those surprised/dismayed at the end result. I’m not at all racist, but tell me she didn’t win 'cause she was Asian and cute and ‘oh don’t hurt me’? 'cause at least that reason makes sense. Gen should have won. Gen DID win; the other nerds gave her title away.

Yep, Gen was robbed, even though Celeste was much more likable. If they bring it back for a new season, I’d love to see some kind of reunion special. For all her whining, did Danielle really believe she had any chance to win in the finals against either of the other girls? I think she may have been shut out of the popular vote against either one.

Enjoyable show, but it makes me yearn for a return of the far superior “Beauty and the Geek”.

I keep hearing of this Beauty and the Geek.
So…I am off to acquire it…somehow, lol.
I’m sure I’ll find a way. Thanks for the suggestions!
