Knights of the Old Republic - Technical Problems - Some Spoilers

Dunno where to post this, but video game threads usually go here.

I love “Knights of the Old Republic.” I’m just enjoying every minute of it, even though everyone in my party has some huge personality problem. (I left the depressed Wookiee behind, I got so sick of his crap. But “The Bipolar Wookiees” would be a great band name.)

However, the game is giving my XBox fits. It starts to slow down after long playing sessions and last night it just gave up entirely. Maybe it’s overheating to play it as long as I have - the box is not poorly ventilated or anything - but I’ve had it crash just out of the blue, too. On 4-5 occasions it has gone belly up when I tried to level up.

Last night I was just in the process of breaking into the bridge of the interdictor cruiser (and if someone could tell me where to find a space suit I’d appreciate it) and the game just totally gave up. It ended up with the black screen saying “Your disc may be dirty or damaged” which, at least on visual inspection, it is not. Now, at that point it had been on for 7-8 hours, so maybe it’s a heat issue.

Anyone else experiencing these issues? What do I do?

I believe your best bet would be to head over to swforums.bioware.com and ask. There’s been at least one major game-crashing glitch, as well as several random crashes.

There should be a couple open threads at any given moment on those issues.

My KOTOR crashes ocassionally as well. Whenever it does bug out or crash I just turn if off for a few hours and do something else in the meantime.

The game crashes, which is a shame. Just have to accept it I guess. Maybe hope for a free patch?

Rick - I bought the game for my 13 year old nephew and he was immediately addicted. I only got it for him because they guy at the gaming store said it was the best game ever. So far the kids beat it as a good guy now he’s going through as a member of the Dark side.

Back to the OP. I bought another copy of the game for myself because the nephew insisted I’d love it. (I usually like splinter cell/ metal gear type games).

I am about 8 hours into it as well, I have a psychopathic droid who just lloves killing anything. And I have noticed my machine crashes sometimes as well. I think we can eliminate over heating because I simply don’t play very much. Usually late at night If I can’t sleep. maybe an hour at a time.

Great game though.

I just hit the HUGE plot twist. Had to admit, I saw it coming.

However, right after that I crashed in the Big Crash that apparently everyone gets. Shit.

RickJay, the way to avoid that is to replay that particular level without using Juhani or Mission, as it is their cloaking abilities that screw things up during the cutscene. I recommend HK-47 (if you’ve repaired him- he’s absolutely devastating when fully upgraded) or Jolee (for his healing, if nothing else). The level isn’t really that difficult, anyway, so it’s not as if going without cloak will impair you significantly.

Of course, that is all incumbent on you having a saved game prior to the selection of your character. If not… you’re out of luck. :frowning:

Personally, I didn’t encounter any significant bugs. The cutscenes had a tendency to chug a bit, as I suspect the game engine preloads levels during cutscenes, but otherwise the game went flawlessly. From what I hear, that’s generally how it’s working out- some people never have any difficulties, while others are being driven mad by bug after bug.

Is there something you have to do to upgrade him after you find out who he really is? He told me that his assassinations functions could one day be restored but I just finished the game today and I never noticed anything different about him.

I’ve already started over and I’m playing through as evil as possible this time so I would really like to spend some quality time with the bag of bolts this time around (even though, as far as I can tell, every non-jedi character in the game is next to worthless once you can assemble a full-party of jedis.)

You have to fix HK-47 before the big plot twist, while he still gives you the option of attempting the repair manually. Afterwards, he claims to be fully restored, but lacks the stat improvements that you’d get from repairing him yourself.

He never would let me do that, he always told me to try later or something.
