A recent article in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology by Pace University psychologist Terence Hines affirms what many (including your columnist) have long suspected about that legendary locus of female sexual pleasure, the Grafenberg spot, also known as the G-spot. The G-spot supposedly is a small, highly sensitive area on the anterior (front) wall of the vagina that swells and produces pleasurable sensations when manually stimulated. Few today doubt there is such a thing. In one survey of 1,300 professional women, 84 percent agreed that “a highly sensitive area exists in the vagina.”

Of course, in that article, Cecil is arguing that current research tells against the existence of a G-spot. At least, the jury is still very much out.

In any case, the article you cited doesn’t say anything about whether there are literally two different kinds of orgasms.

Here is a summary on female orgasm research that I wrote for another thread:

Multiple orgasms in women were first reported by Kinsey in 1953 and was met with shock and denial. People said that those women must be sluts or nymphos. Masters and Johnson confirmed his findings in 1966 and found that all women are biologically capable of multiple orgasms. The text also describes multiple orgasms in men, saying that often men who have multiple orgasms will have dry orgasms before, after, or during ejaculatory orgasms. Right now, there is no way of knowing if all men are capable of multiple orgasms or only a few. There haven’t been many studies done on the subject.

Signmund Freud first proposed the difference between vaginal and clitorial orgasms. He also said that clitoral orgasms were immature compared to vaginal orgasms. Masters and Johnson (1966) monitored physiological responses to sexual stimulation and found that the same biological events follow no matter how orgasm is achieved. They then declared that there is only one type of orgasm, clitoral. However, in 1972, Singer and Singer declared that females have three types of orgasm: vulval, uterine, and blended. According to the Singers, vulval is the orgasm described by Masters and Johnson. Uterine does not involve vulval contractions but rather occurs in response to the penis thrusting against the cervix. This orgasm is accompanied by a certain pattern of breathing – deep breaths, gulping air, etc. While the blended is a combination of the two. This is still debated, as is the existence of the G-spot.

I never said (or even implied) that a woman can’t enjoy penetration. But porn actresses are actresses. If they’re not faking, what are they paying them for?

From what I understand a majority of porn stars are faking it, BUT some actually do make it to orgasm. SORRY to hijack, but I believe Jenne Jameson actually said she has climaxed numerous times during filming, but mostly from girl-on-girl action.

I think what I’m experiencing these days are orgasms via the G-spot, which I enjoy many, many times more than those from clitoral stimulation. I know exactly where it is now and it’s definitely the source, and it’s all about position for me, angle of my legs, his technique and staying power. Now that we’ve figured it out, though, we can ring-a-ding-ding every time.

The differences between the G-spot O and the clitoral O are several. First, the build with a G-spot orgasm comes on slower (well, for me-- slow is 10-15 minutes, usually starting in missionary and switching to girl-on-top), then peaks. The peak lasts about 10 seconds, and is damn near always followed by 2-4 more within the next 5 minutes. The most I’ve had is 6 in one go, 11 in one day. I would add that this is a recent phenomenon, in the last year or so.

With the clitoral O, I could only have the one, then I was maxed out. Maybe I could have another one later that day, maybe not. Also, direct stimulation almost always leads to soreness, whereas the hands-off approach of the G-spot orgasm leaves me feeling… well, fucking awesome all over, with no provisos.

And now I feel I’ve said too much. Why am I embarrassed to be having this conversation? I’m such an American. Screw it, I’m posting it anyway.

I’ve watched a few documentaries on how porn is made (strictly, um, academic interest, ahem), and the action onscreen is spliced together from several go-rounds. There’s a lot of stopping and restarting, which probably makes it harder for a girl to get off from penetration. It’s all about sustaining a rhythm, right?

I think some of your wife’s friends may fall into one category and some may fall into another. Personally, I can have an orgasm either way but a clitoral orgasm is much better. Also I orgasm very quickly and I have multiple orgasms. Just because I can be finished in a minute or two doesn’t mean that there isn’t more where that came from! I think the most orgasms I ever had during one sexual experience was somewhere around 30 and that was a combination of both vaginal and clitoral. (I am a 24 year old woman FWIW)
