My sister and I are coming to Vegas from Aug 1 -14 (don’t you know).
I tried to explain the Dope + Dopefests to her, and she said she’d give it a go.
I can do a pretty good English accent and burble on about chess, roleplaying + computer games.
I’ve only ever met the sister of a Doper, so it would be excellent to meet some of you guys.
I don’t know if you’ll be able to find my hotel though. Apparently there’s a 230 foot long Sphinx in front of it, but that’s probably nothing by Vegas standards…
You have to woo us, as we locals are rather selective and have exquisite taste and refinement - but usually the offer of a free beer in a dive bar works.
As they say, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” - so some of the people from the August DopeFest might still be in the bar when you arrive in November.
Hello all - just a quick bump for those of you who have to plan months ahead.
We just had some German friends visit and they got a great deal at Four Queens downtown - and although I am not a big fan of the downtown area, they told me that the Four Queens has renovated their rooms; all new furniture and flat screen televisions - and they still got a deal that averaged out to be about $25 per night!
The German friends do like most tourists - just go to the room to sleep. Otherwise, they were out and about all day - so for them, the cheap room was exactly what they needed and they had a great time - they went to see The Producers at Paris (loved it) and they also went to see KA at MGM Grand and loved it as well. They also went to see JUBILEE at Bally’s for the sixth time - they like the old Vegas feel of the show and I highly recommend the show for that reason as well.
At any rate, just another bump for those who might have to plan ahead and hope we can get a good group together in August!

When I came to Milwaukee for the excellent World Roleplaying Championships (GenCon), I travelled with a top English roleplaying referee (DM).
He told me that the previous years he’d been given good marks for running the game, but had the extra comment “lose the phoney English accent!” :eek:
Depending on which weekend everyone’s decided on, I’m pretty sure that I could go. And to the best of my knowledge, DiosaBellissima should be in Vegas a good chunk of August as well.
So, I’ll cut to the chase - has anyone decided on a weekend?
Well, my birthday is the 23rd so I suggest the 24th-26th. (I usually work weekends but considering I haven’t taken time off work since Christmas, and don’t plan on taking any more between now and then, it would be a good time for a break)
But if the collective decides on a different one I can still probably swing it.
As a local, I get visitors coming to visit Las Vegas I haven’t seen in 45 years (seriously). Our house rule of thumb is that “whoever comes the furthest distance wins” and gets priority.
That being the case, glee is schlepping in from England and will only be here the first two weekends (Aug 3, 4 and 5 and Aug 10, 11 and 12) - so I think one of those first two weekends would be only fair while he is in town.
As far as which of those weekends - well, when anyone gets serious and starts making a few phone calls regarding room rates and costs of flights, perhaps one of those weekends might be cheaper/easier to book than the other.
I will leave it up to the non-locals to figure out which of the first two weekends would be best/cheapest/most convenient.
(PS - a quick search shows no major conventions in town those two weekends which should translate into cheaper rates. The World Shoe Assoc. with 37,000 attendees ends August 2 and the Associated Surplus Dealers (?!?!) with 62,000 attendees doesn’t arrive until August 12th.)
Since I live here, I am always willing to meet up with any Dopers whenever they come to town. I am usually free most weekends and I rarely have any solid plans- just every now and then.
August sounds like a good plan. It is hot, but that is what the AC is for!
Last night a handful of us LV Dopers met up at the Crown and Anchor for dinner and a couple of pints ::waves to the other local Dopers:: Good time!
Yeah, it was fun last night! It helped that MadPansy bought the beer! (LVGeogeek: See email I sent you today).
And while we were together, we started to discuss some plans for VegasDopeFest07, so as soon as there is some consensus on which of the first two weekends in August, we can start shoring up plans from here.
Still awhile away - but will bump this thread the end of next month and if nobody still has a preference about coming weekend one or weekend two of August, I will just flip a coin to pick the weekend.
If RandMcNally is still state-side, then Drachillix and I will go.
Wait. It’s my 5th wedding anniversary that weekend, the first weekend in August. Do I really want to spend it with my nephew, Dopers, Spamalot, Jimmy Choo and margaritas shaped like the Statosphere?

I must have missed the memo on this one…I’m going to have to fire my secretary, I mean cat…
On Weds I’m kayaking down the black canyon, just below Hoover dam, so I’ll let ya all know how that is. In any case, I’m down anytime to get together with fellow dopers…as long as my cat lets me know where to show up.
Either weekend in August works for us. We’ll be coming off Comic-Con the last weekend in July, so we may be leaning towards the second weekend. Whatever works out best for everybody else.
