I may join you all if it’s on the second weekend, but it depends on my job situation, so don’t change weekends on my account. I’ll know more in a couple of months.
All you non-Vegas dopers are in trouble – with DMark, MadPansy, LVGeogeek, and me ALL working on plans…
I had a great time, even if I did pick up the tab
At this point, any weekend in August is good for Giant Freakin Marine & me, so I vote for someone else to make the decision.
Is it too early to start tossing out suggestions for places? Lotus of Siam is great, of course. So is Toby Keith’s “I Love The Bar and Grill” at Harrah’s. Or maybe the brewpub at Main Street Station? Or maybe the Crown & Anchor?
How about that Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville place that **newcrasher **mentioned in his tequila thread?
Look at me, assuming I’m going to make it… still up in the air (after this morning, nothing’s changed!) but I want to come!
The problem with Margaritaville is that it’s gonna be packed unless we hit it at some odd hour. They also have zero accomodations for large groups. It’s a nice place, but it has its limitations.
UPDATE JUNE 2, 2007
Hello All!
Plans are forging ahead and the Las Vegas Dopers will be getting together soon to shore up the details. It seems the second weekend in August is starting to look the best for most people, so let’s go ahead and set the date:
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 10, 11 and 12.
So far, the people who have expressed some interest are:
Silenus
Least Original User Name Ever
Cyn
Triskadecamus
Scuba Ben
Mad Pansy
Rick
Rigamarole
fetus
Glee
Yeticus Rex
Ems
Tashabot
DiosaBellissima
RandMcNally
LVGeogeek
Kinoons
Cowgirl Jules
Kurilla
We still have over two months to go, so check your calendars to see if you can join us!
Currently, the tentative plans are a meet-and-greet on Friday evening (perhaps at the Brew Pub at the Monte Carlo Hotel Casino again - good central location, not wildly expensive and large enough to handle bigger groups). Perhaps a Saturday early afternoon pool party/BBQ/drinks at a private home in Las Vegas. A Sunday morning-ish breakfast/brunch. There might be some free or cheap show tickets involved (depending on availability and the reliability of the local contact person) plus some other optional events and a few other suggestions that still have to be hashed out.
(LasVegasDopers - email me for info on the day and time for our July get-together - and Happy Birthday to LVgeogeek!).
Keep us posted on your availability to attend the Great LasVegasDopefest07, and if you have any suggestions for events, specific locations, questions or whatever, let us know. (And no, we will not be supplying hookers in the gift bag, but can point you in the right direction.)
Hope to see as many of you as possible this August!
I’m in!
Count me in. My sister, for whom I will (very soon, promise) pay a membership fee*, will be joining us. While she’s accompanied me to a couple of other 'fests, this will be her first as a bonafide subscriber.
fetus, I will be sending you a PM shortly.
*It worked! Talk about the boards enough and it’ll spark some interest eventually. My first recruit… I’m so proud of myself.
Please not if we are going to eat. I ate at the one in Orlando. The food was at best a horrible disappointment.
For drinks, fine. For food no. It is also fairly loud, so conversation between dopers would be tough.
DMark If we do the private home BBQ thing, I would be happy to either run or assist with the grill.
I would be VERY happy to have you do that! Thanks!
You do know you have to wear that French maid’s outfit, but we’ll talk about that later…
Great!
Also glad to hear Cyn is on board as well!
We’re in!
How about The Crown and Anchor for the meet & greet? I’m not too happy with the Monte Carlo after last year. With advance notice they can handle a crowd (we hit them with 25 home-brewers a few years ago), and the beer is a helluva lot better than the Monte Carlo. (Did you know the Monte Carlo’s brewing equipment was bought by a new microbrewery opening at the airport in Redlands?) Margaritaville doesn’t have the room for all of us at one time. We’d have to hit it at 3am to get seats for everybody.
Add me to the list of grill-masters if we do the BBQ. I also weild a mean cocktail shaker.
Great!
And I am more than happy to turn over the grill to those of you who like to stand next to a BBQ in August weather…really! You and Rick can share the grill duties!
Regarding Crown and Anchor…it is OK (the last local LasVegasDopers meeting was there) but it is a bit of a schlep for out-of-towners without a car. I just thought it might be better to find someplace directly on the Strip (where most people usually stay) for the first night as it makes it easier for people to find and get there and back to their rooms.
How about Quark’s? Reachable by monorail. Or Toby Keith’s in Harrah’s? Gordon Biersch? Ellis Island? 9 Fine Irishmen?
Just my $0.02
The Crown & Anchor is fine for a meet and greet but they do not take reservations and on a Friday night the crowds can be unpredictable for a large group. The service is notoriously slow. I just got back from there now, and had to wait out a drunken English rugby team for a place to sit. There were 5 of us.
Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville: Good drinks, bad food. The drinks are pricey. I went there in October. Two margaritas cost $28.00 without the tax or tip. The staff was enthusiastic. Seating is limited for large groups from what I saw (I could be wrong)
Quarks is cool, even if you don’t like Star Trek. I haven’t been there in years.
9 Fine Irishmen I have heard that it is very overpriced for what you get but I have never been there.
I haven’t heard anything about Toby Keith’s place, good or bad.
Ellis Island, used to have karaoke on the weekends. I am unsure if they still do that. The last time I was there the place seemed really rundown and dirty, but the ribs/barbecue is pretty good.
Gordon Beirsh, I don’t have strong feelings about.
Hennessy’s Tavern on Fremont Street is decent, and has live music on Friday nights from 9 to 1.
I also agree with Silenus, that the MC brew pub would be OK with advanced notice, but with a huge group of people just showing up creates a bit of a problem.
Well, it sounds like we LasVegasDopers have some pub research to do…and in the name of research, I suggest we try several places to determine the best…geez - making us go out to different pubs and trying them out; what we don’t do in the name of Doper research.
Silenus, perhaps you can make an early trip here to help us in our efforts? I know it is asking a lot, but maybe you can figure out a way to come here and help us with this difficult task? How does an early July foray to Las Vegas look for you?
Actually, we are planning a weekend getaway for mid-June, I think. I’ll check with the wife and let you know.
Toby Keith’s is a nice place, with very large cocktails. It’s downtown, but I remember the brewpub at Main Street Station as being large and reasonable. Don’t know if they could handle a large party without advance notice.
The main complaint I have about the Monte Carlo is the fact that the pub turns into a disco and gets too loud to talk. If we schedule the meet & greet for an earlier hour this might be avoidable.
Thanks for being so hospitable - does this mean you’ve forgiven us for taxation without representation?
My sister and are are staying at the Luxor and won’t have a car, so we’d really appreciate something on what you native call ‘the Strip’.
Our plans are:
Aug 10th—night flight over the city
Aug 11th—‘float trip’ down some river (well she’s going - I’m hanging around the city)
Aug 12th-- ‘Love’ at Cirque du Soleil
So I’m sure I’m in and my sister might be…
I shall be in town the evenings of the 17 (of June) to the 20th. I must stay the Hilton (as the Suncoast has no rooms at the inn). I am just stopping to show my mother the town and to renew my driving license. Still if anyone wants to see what I look like, I am available.
