Well, I guess it was obvious that Dat Phan was going to be challenged by the majority of the house but I was so surprised that everyone voted for him… including the great conflict avoider Geoff Brown.
Dat did good by keeping Geoff in and challenging a member the the coalition. It was sad to see Dave Mordal go, i thought he was funny (snide comments and jerky attitude included). I SO wanted to see Rich Vos or Tess go, but i guess Dat knew that he can have a greater chance to Dave because his delivery isn’t as honed as the other comics. Even the best writers need to have good timing and delivery to make a joke work.
It’s kinda weird what is going to happen in next week’s episode, there is going to be some kind of showdown to make it a “final five” and not six. I hope Dat stays in, his jokes aren’t that great but his heart and drive make him worth cheering for.
and man do I abhor Rich Vos, the self-proclaimed Don of the house. I hope this guy doesn’t win, he is so full of himself and his Mafioso shtick is so detestable. And not to be sexist, but the female comics aren’t funny at all.
Is it just me or is Ralphie’s montrous obesity just a tad bit sickening? Whenever they pan to him I kinda lose my breath and feel tired for the guy. I only weigh 140 lbs and was never obese and his weight just makes me want to breath for the guy. It must be horrible lugging all that excess weight around.
I think Dave has impeccable timing. He’s just a little more laid back. His material was much better than Dat’s. Dat really only does one joke if you think about it, the mom with the Vietnamese accent.
I thought Mordal was by far the best comic in the house and I was really disappointed to see him go. I like Dat on a personal level, though, so I wouldn’t mind seeing him win. He definitely seems like the nicest person in the house.
My favorite person in the house was Robert. His act sounded as if he were one of your friends and was just talking. To me, his act didn’t seem like an act.
Mordal’s act is not really TV friendly. It was shocking to see him go - but Dat, like Ralphie last week, used the tried and tried formula of cheap stereotype humor.
My guess it that, as old pros, Dave and Rich, are just doing the show for exposure. If they win, great, it not, no big loss. I think they both avoided really trying to win the contest so it would never look like they tried.
But that’s just my guess based on what I can see from the sofa.
I think the audience they’re getting must be comic newbies. For the second week in a row they ignored the more original set and awarded the more cliched one.
However it was very satisfying to see their plans blow up in their face.
I think my health would be more important than having pretty girlfriends. Man I need to breath huge gulps of air for his obese body.
Robert? oh you mean Rob Cantrell, the guy who got booted out last week. He was funny, but again, his delivery wasn’t that great. Great jokes, but he didn’t seem to warm to the crowd. I think Rob Vos is gonna die because of this and Tess is gonna go far with her shtick… God, I hope both of them get the boot ASAP. and include Corey in there too. I don’t have much to say about Geoff’s routine, because I don’t think I remember seeing it ever.
I hope that Dat and Ralphie make it far.
And wasn’t it weird how 70% of the crowd voted for Dat. That is quite a high margin of victory from the “rookie” to beat down the 9year veteran.
And what’s up with the look of disgust they were showing on the fellow comics when Dat was doing his (in my opinion) lame routine. Were they scared for Dave Mordal that Dat was getting laughs? Or do they just SO hate Dat that they can’t even find his jokes one bit humourous?
I am terribly dissapointed by the outcome tonight. Dat’s performance tonight wasn’t funny at all. It most definately was Cheap, and incredibly unoriginal. When they cut to commercial, I would have almost bet my life on Dave Mordal winning (glad I didn’t though).
The saddest part, for me, is that I"m not sure where I’ll ever be able to see his comedy again. If he came to Toronto, I’d buy a ticket.
As for my favorites still on the show…I’m going with Rich Vos and Dat Phan. Even though I disliked Dat’s performance tonight, I did find his others funny enough that I know he’s got quality in him. I am not necessarily a fan of how Rich conducts himself in the house, but I do find him very funny onstage.
Dave does have impeccable timing for quick snide remarks, off the cuff jackassery and simple put-downs. But for stand-up he doesn’t have great timing with his jokes. He’s better suited for insult comedy or improv insult comedy. Something in the lines of Mike Bullard who talks to the crowd, makes fun of them while not rehearsing with the people he interacts with.
I’m thinking Rich Vos has this same ability since Dave and Rich got some kind of “chemistry”. And Rich doesn’t have much interesting material. Ooo he’s a divorced father, big deal. His 20years of honing his craft seems pathetic, he needs to give rookies a chance. Arrogant prick is what he is. Just cause Rich Vos had to pay his dues for so long and not be anything, doesn’t mean that everyone else has to pay their dues for 20 years. He needs to get over himself.
Tess is a force with the crowd. She can get the crowd to laugh with her, which is annoying when the comic laughs at their own jokes. No idea why she has it in for Dat. Racist? hehe. just speculation not accusation. I hope she gets the boot next week. I want to see Ralphie take out Rich Vos.
Corey has no chance. She can be funny here and there, but she’s got lame jokes about her relationship with her daughter.
Geoff, no comment, as for reasons in the above post about not remembering his routine. He kinda reminds me (lookwise) of Tracy Morgan from Saturday Night Live.
Dat, don’t like the asian accent thing, but ppl can identify with mothers being nags. He needs better material, if that’s all he’s got, I don’t think he’ll go far. If that’s the best he’s got, he doesn’t stand a chance.
Ralphie, great stage presence, material and timing. Has got the “black” jokes, fat jokes, and more. I think he’ll win. Well I hope that Rich Vos, Cory or Tess don’t win is all that I care hehe.
Do you guys think the formation of a cabal was necessary or useful for this format? I mean sure, it’s pretty easy to organize a group to get together and vote for someone but that person they’re after has (or rather had) an ever increasing chance of getting an exemption. And if the victim doesn’t get that he still has the chance to take one of cabal leaders out instead. They’ve been trying to get rid of Dat for 2 weeks and have only succeeded in losing Rob and Dave, one of the main players in the coalition.
I can’t help but think that things would have proceeded in pretty much the same way without any acrimony if they just went ahead and played a straight game. Maybe if Vos weren’t there. I’ve despised him for quite some time.
Or maybe I’m just a happy-go-lucky optimist who wonders why we can’t all just get along?
I was totally flabbergasted that Dave got taken out last night – I was rooting for him to win the whole thing. I thought his set last night was hilarious – “I could have outrun the cop, but there was a really good song on the radio.” Yeah, it took a second to get that – which I guess was an insurmountable obstacle for an audience that was clearly composed of nothing but idiots. Dat’s set, on the other hand, was, as you have all already observed, cliched, racist stuff that just wasn’t funny. I don’t find it all that funny when Margaret Cho goes there, and she’s an infinitely better comic.
I thought it was funny as hell when Dat’s sitcom walk-on was just that – a walk-on. Hee hee hee.
I loathe Ralphie – I’m overweight myself, but geez effin’ Louise he’s grotesque – and again, not terribly funny. I don’t know who to root for amongst the remaining comics – I missed the first two weeks (the auditions), so haven’t seen Rich Vos or Geoff perform yet. I was so sure Dave Mordal was going all the way that I hadn’t bothered to pick a second-favorite comic.
I think we’ll hear more from him – he got some really good exposure in the time he was on (far more than Geoff, who’s still a total cipher to me), and suspect he’ll get a good gig from this, writing or whatever. He’s a funny, funny guy.
Just a quick chime in here. I caught the show for the first time last night and quite frankly think they all need to get over themselves. But Vos is the biggest schmuck on the planet. Talk about stereo-types: the miserable, pathetic human beings who are only likeable when on stage wears on me quickly. I think Dat’s whole thing is fake, he’s cultivating that nice guy image, but it isn’t any more real than Garth Brooks “gosh-shucks” country boy routine. Dat is calculating as evidenced by his scene with the female comic (I believe he referred to her as his “Mom” – pretty slick to put her down and praise her at the same time).
Plus, interestingly enough, I think the others all fear Dat – particularly Vos, who is too big a macho prick to face up to it. He hides behind his little facade of “pay your dues” blah blah blah, when what he’s really saying is: he’s kicking my ass and I can’t figure out why.
Look at how two episodes – by eveyone’s account here – have been all about Dat: the man’s an evil genius.
I’ll go on record as saying I find they all annoying self-absorbed jerks and will likely NOT watch the thing again. However, saying that, I react to most reality shows that way.
Boooo. Dat is boring and clichéd. That’s why he’ll win and be the star of some retarded sitcom called “Dat’s the Truth!” or something, which will still last longer than Freaks and Geeks or Family Guy ever did.
I was shocked that Dave left. I thought that either he or Ralphie would win this thing. He was my favorite comic. So, yeah, boo indeed. But I think his career can handle it. And I was happy to see Dat stick it to the “cabal.” I hate the way people on these shows overestimate their skills at manipulation. They lie to a person once and suddenly they’re Don Corleone. (Yeah, I’m looking at you, Rich Vos. Shut up.)
I don’t think Dat is cold and calculating. He’s just a nerd. He has this book where he’s cataloged every joke in every show he’s ever done. And ranked them all on how well they did. He’s the last “outsider” that the others decided had to go in the beginning. If this was a classroom Dave and Rich would be in the back together talking and Dat would be front and center and the cool kids are out to get him. Amusingly the game was set up where the target gets to choose who to take down. Plus the crowd is undeterminable. Who knows what type of comedy might be the favorite of them in any given night. Every challenge is a crap shoot. It’s just too bad it wasn’t Vos who got kicked out instead of Dave.
I think the one they’re all afriad of is Tess. She won the first two clemencies and did very well on her appearance on Entertainment Tonight (Made fun of Dat by putting him down. Another one of the cool kids) or whatever show it was.
Check out the accomplishments of all of the comics. Some of them are still performing at comedy clubs while the show goes on. Dat is. His last show was on sunday.
Jay Mohr has been pretty vocal about the fact that he thinks Dave Mordal was the best comic on the show and I heard him say somewhere (don’t remember where) that the network was interested in doing something with Dave regardless of he outcome of the contest. Look for Mordal to make some appearances on Leno and Conan…and possibly a sitcom pilot sometime down the road.
I’ll give you that everyone who is remotely talented and marketable in the group will come away with something, if not from the network they’re on from some other company.
I also think the “Cool Kids” analogy is spot on – that’s exactly like High School, which is a sad statement for a group of people in their 30’s and 40’s.
These comics aren’t too bright. You know, considering the audiences that seem to like the “humor you don’t have to think about” rather than voting for Dat and letting HIM choose who he goes up against, and risk losing someone like Dave, the cabal should have voted for someone they knew could beat him, like Ralphie, and make him choose to go against Dat. And even if Dat wins, they get rid of the competition of a real comic powerhouse. They win either way. There is no strategy in this competition. Too bad.
Dang, prisoner, remind me not to be on Last Doper Writing with you, because you’d definitely outwit, outlast, and outplay me. Excellent strategy!
What I was wondering about – do you think the people who were in the audience for the Dat-Dave jokefest watched the TV show last night and thought “what the hell were we thingking?”?
