Interesting how there’s a chance the show could come back without Braff and Lawrence if the ratings are high enough. Not sure how I would feel about a J.D.-less show.
I also wonder what Lawrence means when he says he “compromised” on J.D. and Elliot ending up together. To me that suggests something of a vague resolution, letting viewers draw their own conclusions.
I’m not looking forward to it at all. I’ve been watching the reruns and got turned off when I realized:
J.D. is the biggest asshole on television.
Turk is number 2.
The scripts try to pretend that J.D. is some lovable lug, but his actions makes Gregory House look like an altruist. At the end of each episode, of course, JD realizes he’s been a jerk, but that’s always way after the fact and the next week, he’s at it again.
The key to enjoying Scrubs is realizing and accepting that you’re supposed to hold J.D. in boundless contempt. He’s not meant to be lovable to the audience; you laugh at him, not with him.
JD lost me quite a long time ago. I spent time wondering why the show isn’t a long stream of people he knows kicking his ass for the stupid shit he does.
Oh, Cox is an asshole too, but at least his assholery is (a) explicable and (b) tempered by competence. A big irony of the show is that he starts out actually liking JD but merely pretends not to so that he can be a better teacher to him. If JD weren’t so damn needy, they’d be friends by this point.
I’ve been watching Scrubs for a while in reruns. And for the longest time I didn’t even KNOW that it was still getting new episodes. Heck, when I saw all the ads now on ABC,I was a little confused since I thought it had been canceled years ago. The fact that it had lasted so long on NBC with little to no advertising is pretty impressive. I’m hopeful that this season will be good since it’ll be the first time I’ll be seeing it in prime time.
As far as J.D. being an ass, I actually never thought that. I always saw him as someone who just was just a bit too needy and who made very very poor life decisions. I actually liked him and felt sorry for him more often than not.
The problem is that many of his poor life decisions have a strong impact on others, and there’s usually very strong hints that he knows he’s making the wrong choice but he does so anyway. He has a tendency to jerk people around, particularly Elliot.
Being that you’ve been watching reruns, I’ll spoiler the next bit. There’s nothing terribly spoileriffic, just talking about broad story arcs that you may not have seen yet:He crushed hard on Elliot when she was seeing someone else, then when life finally threw him a bone and they got together, he cast her aside. Then when she finally recovered from that blow and started seeing someone else again, he suddenly wanted her all over again and was jealous enough to try to sabotage her relationship. He lacked the introspection necessary to realize how unhealthy this was, which is ironic considering how much time he spends in his own head. This whole pile of BS was what made me dislike JD intensely. I’d kill to be with Elliot, neuroses and all, and he just tossed her aside because suddenly she was no longer unattainable.
Edit: And Turk is all right. He sometimes succumbs to JD’s insanity, but for the most part he’s a cool guy and is happy just going with the flow.
When they got to the point that he was passing out every time he took a dump, I decided I was watching the show for the other characters.
I think I know where Lawrence is going with the “I compromised” bit.
For JD and Elliott to grow up and have positive dramatic arcs as characters, they would have had to do exactly what they didn’t do - Elliott should have married Keith, and JD should have tried to make his relationship with Kim work - and both should have gotten over each other. By not doing that the two characters regressed, hurting others and turning themselves back into children. Any resolution now is going to seem lame.
I must have missed the memo, because that certainly wasn’t the case in the first two (good) seasons. He was a goof and a dork, sure, but his only real flaws were that he was a klutz and cared too much about his patients.
Having stuck with the show even til now, I can’t remember the last time he even treated a patient. The show in general has drifted way too far from the original premise.
