Left 4 Dead - PC or Xbox ?

So normally I wouldn’t touch an FPS on a console, but I do like the sound of Left 4 Dead on split screen, and nowdays the PC is the “poor relation” of games platforms even for FPS (in terms of developer effort, at least).

So what’s to opinion of the assembled zombie killing Dopers ? How well does the co-op multiplayer work over the regular internet ? Which should I put on my christmas list ?

I don’t have a 360, but I’m happy with the PC version, and the dopers I’ve played with are pretty nice. Getting into an all doper game is pretty intense. The SDMB Steam community group is pretty big, and there is usually at least a half dozen people online playing various games. I like how you can jump right to games your friends are on.

I believe the x360 version of L4D doesn’t support playing versus. Also, remember that PC’s are wildly configurable so it’s pretty easy to configure a PC that displays better pictures than a xBox (though it will ABSOUTELY cost you a lot more).

Personally, I’ve never been a great fan of hand held controllers. I’ve owned almost every console system at one time or another and I just prefer mouse/keyboard. I’m sure you can have great time with consoles, I’m just an old PC fuddy/duddy.

Nope. The 360 has Versus mode. It’s the same game, but it comes down to whether or not you prefer mouse/keyboard or a controller.

Fair warning: you cannot play split screen 4-player on the 360 version. My friend tells me he specifically bought the 360 version so he could play it when he had people over to his apartment. Upon learning that 4-player would only be an option if he were to subscribe to x-box live (he doesn’t), he promptly returned it for the PC version.

I’ve got the PC version. I’m a fan of fps on PCs in general, but in Left 4 Dead, there is a single reason to go for more precision: Friendly Fire.

You spend a lot of time aiming at zombies that are very close to your friends. The extra precision of a mouse is very useful, particularly on harder difficulty levels where a single shot can incapacitate.

…Or you’re already precise with a controller and it’s not an issue.

Really, guys. It’s possible to be precise with a controller.

For what it’s worth, Lost Planet is having PC-console competitions soon.

There’s supposed to be downloadable content coming at some point. It might be worth it to research if one platform might get more than the other. The same scenarios over and over can get pretty boring.

Given the developer, I doubt Valve will favor one platform over another with additional content. That’s just a guess, but is seems reasonable.

It’s possible to drive a car using only your feet, too. Just sayin’.

Next time, say something that’s true.

With the PC version you can play split screen too. There is a console command for it.

You can also play with a controller if you want to. Just plug in an xbox 360 controller or some other third party controller and play with that. Both steam and left 4 dead will automatically detect and configure your xbox 360 controller.

The SDMB community on Steam is pretty big, and there are at least 6 or more people playing Left for dead in any one evening. If you’ve got buddies on the xbox though, and they don’t have the PC version of left4dead then xbox might be a better fit.

That is true, actually.

Next time, do some research before you post.

True for you and Cuckoorex.

One.
Two.
Three.

By the way, I play FPS games with a gamepad and prefer it to a mouse and am able to use it perfectly well, but your dismissal of a fact was based on ignorance. Blarg.

No, it’s based on preference.

If I’m reading this right, you’re both talking about two different things.

You can drive with your feet. That’s a fact, and I believe it’s the one LOUNE is being accused of dismissing. LOUNE on the other hand is refering to the fact that you can be precise with a controller.

Controller vs mouse is a preference. I’m sure controller junkies are out there that can do a good job hitting their targets. I certainly can hit what I aim for with my 360 controller. But compared to my mouse, it’s kludgey and slow. YMMV.

Possibly. I’d rather not get into a Pit and/or GD style discussion here, but the original claim was that Cuckoo’s joke about being able to drive with your feet was not “true”, not that it wasn’t an accurate analogy. Boring old ignorance fighter that I am, I objected to having a fact called an un-truth.

I’d have agreed that it’s not an accurate analogy, as after years of console gaming I’d say that I can pull off from-the-hip headshots with the same degree of accuracy with the 360 controller as I ever could with a mouse. I also find it much easier to lead the targeting reticle and hit moving headshots with a gamepad rather than a mouse, as I like to take a while to line up my shots and get a feel for my target’s speed of movement, and keeping my thumb pushed a bit to the left/right has more ‘flow’ and is easier for me to fine tune than moving my mouse across its pad.

And anyways, ironically, a disabled person with a properly rigged car can drive just as well as someone using their hands. Which is why they’re allowed on the road in the first place.

Increase the sensitivity.

Yes, you can drive with your feet. Yes, I’m better with a controller. Also, I like long walks on the beach and holding hands and puppies.
