There were many and I know that I am not enough of a Trek geek to get but a fraction. (I’m a wannabe but that hardly counts.)
My personal favorite was Kirk’s copping a feel of Uhuru during the first fight scene in tribute to a famous outtake in which Shatner does the same.
From the other thread, the redshirt death, the green girl, and Pike ending up in a wheelchair are some fun ones …
What were your favorites? The ones that made you proud that you were enough of a geek to pick it up?
(Of course I also enjoyed the reference to the original In-Laws in the trailer for Land of the Lost … “Serpentine!” … cracked me up but how many in the audience are old enough to appreciate the refernce?)
Not sure if it’s really an in-joke but I enjoyed the bit where Kirk was ticked off at Spock and Bones said, “I like him.” Which of course is funny because in the original series Kirk and Spock were good friends while Bones and Spock were constantly irritating each other (if Vulcans are capable of being irritated).
When Kirk boards the shuttle craft he bonks his head on a low beam. In the Shatner directed film (insert title here), he has Mr. Scott bang his head in a similar scene. Which was stupid. So here, Shatner, by way of his younger incarnation, gets paid back.
I caught the reference, and it’s BLASPHEMY!!!111!!!
But then I saw the original In-Laws in the theater. A perfect comedy! Thank the FSM noone tried to remake it. (LA-LA-LA-LA-I-CAN’T-HEAR-YOU!)
We saw 6 trailers before Start Trek. Each trailer made me less likely to see the movie it advertised than I was before. The Land of the Lost trailer almost made me want to leave the theater before Star Trek. I might see Transformers 2, if my son wants to go. What the heck - it’s got giant robots and Meghan Fox. So Hollywood’s batting 1 for 6 in trailers. It’s going to be a long summer.
I’ve got nothing new to the rest of the OP, but wouldn’t it be very cool, and very 21st century, if the character Sulu were gay?
Oh wait, I got the reference to “Admiral Archer’s prize beagle”. Poor Porthos! (Sniff!) I hope there’s lots of cheese in the transporter confinement beam.
Kirk to Captain Pike: I relieve you.
Pike to Kirk: I… am relieved.
This made me snorfle in the audience because as I have always understood (and as a cursory internet serach confirms) the response is “I stand relieved.” Pike doesn’t stand to much at the moment, though, and it seemed rather like the man to make the tiny joke at his own expense.
I’m not sure if it’s an in joke or just coincidence, but when Leonard Nimoy as Spock Prime (as he’s billed on imdb) meets young Kirk he says “I am Spock”, the name of Nimoy’s second memoir. (His first was I Am Not Spock, written in the 1970s when he was a typecast has been and before the revival of the character made him a multimillionaire.)
Either way… fascinating.
Perhaps fellow 60s Jesus Max von Sydow will play deformed Pike in the sequel.
Except I think Sulu is the only one of the original characters who was married in the canon. Leastwise he had a grown daughter in ST Generations.
Speaking of marriage and daughters, I know there was a comic book (and comics are not canon) that mentioned McCoy’s bitter divorce and his daughter (Joanna). Was his ex-wife mentioned in any other sources?
His daughter is mentioned in the animated series, which also isn’t canon. She was also, before they changed it, going to be one of the space hippies in the original series episode The Way to Eden.
In STAR TREK IV Scotty shows the formula for transparent aluminum to a 20th century executive with the excuse “How do ya know he’s not the one what invented it?” In this one Scott receives his own warp speed transporting formula from future Spock.
I kept looking to see if any of the aliens from Star Fleet had three arms. If they did I didn’t see them, but I’d love to learn they did include one Edosian. (I thought this was the best job yet in ST of alien makeup.)
“Damn it I’m a doctor not a ____” (though I can’t remember the exact context).
How did you like Spock instead of new Kirk giving the “to boldly go” spiel? That seemed almost like a joke re: Shatner hogging the best dialogue in the original.
I thought it would have been funny continuity if at Kirk’s trial he had shouted out “Jim Kirk!” when finished (ala “Denny Crane!”). Or if Nyota (love calling her that) had told Spock when she kissed him that “it’s not like it’s the first interspecies kiss”.
Her mother is never mentioned, so he was never married so far as we know.
McCoy’s divorce prompting him to join Starfleet and Nyota finally being called such were the bits I liked most. Those have been key elements of fanon since the Seventies and it was nice to finally hear them on screen.
“Not a physicist!” Which actually makes a lot more sense than “Damn it, Jim, I’m a doctor, not a bricklayer!”
Spock has done the Boldly Go spiel before. I don’t remember exactly when, and if I’m wrong, I’m sure somebody will correct me, but it might have Wrath of Kahn.
I like the additional backstory of how Kirk got the name Tiberius, since AFAIK, that name is never used in TOS. It was added with the Animated series, wasn’t it?
