The cave is the only shelter we know of so far, so let’s step back into the entrance (out of the wind) and try to keep an eye on Antinor (the Impulsive) and Santo.
Hopefully they won’t get lost.
(some survivalist I am…went off to investigate the sunrise…or set…DOH!)
“The light was…well the sun. Maybe we should get some rest until morning. At least the cave will protect us from the worst of the elements. Who wants to stand watch first?”
I think we are pretty safe, since nothing attacked us while we were helpless, but I like your caution.
I’ll watch for a bit and concentrate on what time of day it is.
I suggest if it’s the morning, that we set out to find civilisation.
Tdn, can I remember if I can read or write?
I’ll ask NAF to say some more words in the other language. Was there singing in the Church? Was there a hymnbook?
You try scratching the alphabet onto a rock with a chunk of coal, and with a bit of effort you are able to remember your letters and a few words. Basic syntax comes back to you. You are even able to spell out such phrases as “My name is” and “I was born in”, but can’t think of what to write next. It’s a total blank.
NAF can piece together a few phrases in his other language, both spoken a written. All of you know a few simple names and words in that other language, which seem to have a religious connotation. They make about as much sense to you as Latin does to me – that is, you know the sounds but not the meaning as much.
There are definitely a few songs (think plainchant) and simple prayers that come to mind. And you remember the names of some gods and saints. Larani , Mendiz the Lion, St. Ambrathas, St. Perelyne, the Knights of Tirith. Peoni the gentle goddess, Agrik the god of Fire and Torture, Save-K’nor the god of knowledge.
The light to the left grows brighter. You are in mountains, some of which are snow-capped. They are higher to the right, and slope a bit to the left. The wind is still high but is dying down a bit.
One thing you might want to give thought to is your feet. Walking in bare feet is sure to result in your deaths.
“Ok, looks like morning is coming so we might as well do so looking around. Who knows how far we’ll have to travel so let’s see what we can do for shoes and some more food since what we have won’t last forever.”
Searches around the area for anything of use, especially anything edible.
Gathers up some grass and attempts to weave it into moccasins
You have a surprisingly easy time finding some berries. Good eye! Unfortunately, they are quite young and unripe. Strawberries, if they grew here, would look much like green peas. Clearly, it is springtime.
How are you going to weave moccasins out of grass? Not to be snarky, but when I Google on “alpine grass” and “mountain grass” I get links like this:
Being that I’ve never tried to make footwear, I wouldn’t know. Is this possible? What skills and materials would one need?
Your environment looks not unlike this, but with more trees and undergrowth. Less shale, more granite, and the odd chunk of coal. A good bit of the soil is red.
It was worth a shot. I was thinking along the lines of reeds, but that would be more of a lake thing. They have woven grass baskets, placemats and the like. Was just trying to think outside the box for something to protect our feet.
Interesting, would I be able to tell if it is clay that is making the soil red? Maybe someone else in our party would be able to tell. If it is we might be able to fashion some items from the clay, not now necessarily but maybe later.
As it is morning I say we get exploring the countryside while we keep asking each other question trying to figure out how to jog our memories.
The redness of the soil is not due to its being clay. To prevent you from spending time on the wrong things, it’s iron oxide. And no, don’t even think of smelting it!
As far as shoes go, let’s take a second look at what you have around you.
Wool clothes
A bag containing bread, cheese, and slated meats.
Cloth wrappers for those foods.
Wineskins
Wine
Small chunks of coal
Lots of green wood and some dropwood
Leaves
Rocks, mostly granite
Dirt
Various grasses, some of which are pretty fibrous, but would not hold up well as footwear
removes the wrappers from the food and puts the food in the bag. Attempts to wind the wrappers around his foot as a temporary shoe and looks around for anything else to add inside the wrapper that would provide some extra protection
That’s where grass might come in handy.
It ain’t Prada, but it might just have to do. It seems to be far better than barefoot.
As the sun comes up, the wind starts to die down and you can actually feel a slight tinge of warmth.
Woohoo! shows the others how to fashion a temporary shoe from the cloth wrappers and grass. Also keeps an eye out for a decent pair of Prada slipons
No doubt asking each other questions and interacting with the world will help to recover some memories.
What, where, and how do you want to explore?
Well I don’t know. Antinor, did you seen anything of interest up the hill when you went to explore the phenomina of sunlight?
I don’t like the idea of trying to head down a steep hill in makeshift shoes (btw I will make some shoes) but a little trek up the slight rise might give us a better feel for the land.
While we are doing it we can play 20 questions with each other. I will go first.
I have no memory, but speak another language (a little) and sing (a little) and have some medical knowledge but little knowledge of battle or fieldwork. I came from the city.
Who am I? 20 questions to jog my memory then it is someone elses turn. The person who asks the largest number of usefull questions goes next.
Trees and rocks.
I will follow Antinor’s lead and make some makeshift shoes.
NAF, here are some questions for you:
- are you married?
- do you have children?
- do you own a dwelling?
- how big is your bed?
- who is your best friend?
- which is your favourite pub?
- which is your favourite meal?
- do you remember any of your teachers?
- can you play an instrument?
- how old are you?
I think we should always head downhill, unless there is a vantage point uphill.
I will make memory rolls for each of you on these questions. Some roll may be more difficult than others based on their nature. (That’s my disclaimer as to why I might seem like a mean ol’ GM!)
Since merely asking these questions will necessarily make you think about your own life, everyone gets answers on these. (I can’t ask you how much money you have in the bank without wondering how much I have myself, right?)
- are you married?
This brings up an interesting question. As I don’t wear jewelry, I honestly don’t know the answer. If you wear a ring for several years, then take it off for a few days, does it leave a mark? Let’s assume that you don’t have a tan.
NAF - Don’t know
glee - Yes
Santo - Don’t know
Antinor - Oh hell yeah, and she fills your every thought. Too bad you can’t remember a thing about her. But you know you love her deeply.
- do you have children?

Santo - 45
Antinor - 174, but don’t look a day over six. What are numbers, again?
I agree that we should head downhill. The walking will be easier, and we’ll be more likely to come across a river. I sure am thirsty.
That’s ridiculous! I’d most certainly remember my favorite pub!
-What’s your favorite kind of beer?
-How do you get around the city you live in?
-Do you participate in any sports?
-Do you have any artisan skills?
-Do you have any memory of how we all ended up here?
I’m off to Vegas for a couple of weeks
, but will try to keep posting!
Nice! Enjoy the trip.
