Let's play a role-playing game

You look around, and…

“Hey guys! I found a tasty bug!”

Seriously, though, no you didn’t.

It’s obvious that Antinor is the only one with serious outdoor experience.

Drat!

Maybe I’m a good hunter, that survival skill has come in handy so far. I’ll see if I can broaden our meals beyond berries.

You’ve pretty much tapped the area for now.

The sky darkens and clouds roll in. In the distance you hear thunder. You feel a few raindrops.

There is a nice rocky overhang nearby.

Make for the rocky overhang!

We need shelter and fast.

“Antinor, any chance you’d be able to use any of this green wood I gathered to make a bow into insoles for our shoes? We could peel strips off the wood, and use it to line the cloth. It’d have to afford more protection than the cloth alone, and we’d be able to get farther down the stream tomorrow. It’d be a good activity to keep us busy under the overhang while we’re watching guard for each other.”

“Great idea!”

attempts to put Santo’s suggestion to use

“If you figure it out, see if you can teach the rest of us, Mr. Outdoors. :p”

I should probably put this in the control thread…but I’m RPing my ass off here! Playing a straight, married, outdoorsman is pretty far out of my experience.

And doing quite the job of it!

Woodworking 0/ Cobbling 0/

You rolled a 100.

Whose cloth shoes did you just destroy beyond recognition?

Soon it is too dark to work. The rain turns to a complete downpour. The only illumination is the occasional lightning bolt, some of which are uncomfortable close. This goes on all night. The overhang offers little protection, and soon everything is wet. What little bread you had is now inedible mush.

Everyone is miserable. Things couldn’t possibly get any worse.

Oh yeah – mudslide!

(ETA: Sorry!)

So, two questions:

Antinor, whose shoes did you destroy? (Yes, that’s a serious question.)

The mudslide is going to wash (all of) you away and possibly hurt you. What will you do to mitigate that?

Can you give us a layout of the land (in relation to our place in it) again and what direction the mudslide is coming from? How hard is it raining? How high is the river? How strong is the current? Can any of us swim?

Well, since I’m the rugged survivalist and it was my own clumsiness I would say it’s only fair that I experimented on my own. (Unless someone else wants to volunteer…or we run across those Prada slipons.)

For the 2nd bit, I’ll echo NAF’s questions before I commit to anything.
what do I see, can I spy out any safe refuge or direction to head?

Sure.

You’ve been walking west, and down a gentle grade. The river is to your left, and is about ten feet wide. You haven’t tested the depth, but from its rapid flow, it seems not more than a few feet deep. It is now quite swollen and very rapid. You are camped about 40 feet off to the right. You are under an escarpment some 30 feet long and about 120 feet high. It is mostly dirt with some rocks and roots and stuff. There are a few low bushes within a few feet of you, as well as some sizable boulders.

Water pours over the escarpment and washes a good deal of it away. It’s kind of like getting hit with an ocean wave of about 4-5 feet, only far dirtier. If you were standing, it would definitely knock you off your feet.

It is pitch black. With a decent memory roll, you might remember where a few things are. You do NOT have time to discuss a plan with the others. All you can do is react.

Ok, so the flow is coming from above us. “Boys, we’ve got to move NOW. Secure the supplies as best you can and let’s get across that river. We should miss the worst of the mudflow if we get across. We’re all going to die if we don’t go, start moving!”

Does his best to secure his share of the supplies and crawls out beyond the worst of the flow coming down from the escarpment. When able to stand, he takes off running and leaps as far as possible across the 10 foot river and any that is missed he starts swimming/running (depending on depth) to get to the other side.

(How many rolls do I need to process all that? )

Unsure but in fear for my life I follow Antinor, leaping from the frying pan and into the fire.

I hope the shoes he made for me are fire retardant.

My theory is that the river will absorb most of the flow coming from above us and that we’ll be safer (for a relative value of safer) on the other side of it.

OOC I totally agree. That’s why I asked all of those questons about the river. In character…I am scared shitless. Lead on oh valient leader.

Oh, about a million.

Let’s see – standing, running, jumping, running again. Failing the jumping may result in swimming. I don’t have my stuff with me, so let’s call standing and running a function of AGL, jumping is STR/AGL/AGL, and swimming STR/DEX/AGL.

Antinor

(Roll roll roll)

glee crossed the river like a star athlete. The rest of you failed to even stand up. You got washed a good way down the hill, and you all suffered some injuries from hitting rocks and stuff.

Santo Rugger got minor scrapes on his left hip – 1 injury level.

NAF1138 banged up his right knee a bit – 1 injury level.

Antinor got hurt in his left hip and right upper arm – 2 injury levels.

Each injury level is a -5 to all actions.

Does my limited knowledge of medicine extend to basic first aid? If so can I help recover some of these injuries once we find a new shelter?

We should try to find a new shelter somewhat close to the river, but far enough away that we won’t get flooded out if it rises any further.

Looks around Do I see anything that would make a GOOD new shelter on this side of the river?

ETA: we should probably join glee first. Misread your post tdn.
