I don’t care if the conversation has gone on to TV shows at this point. Lib’s a dick, and a really really smug dick at that. Whatever he claims about the name “liberal”, he’s an American, he knows just as much about the common meaning of the term “liberal” as the rest of us do. Frankly, I don’t see why it’s not obvious that it’s just another example of Lib being a smug dick. You know, makin’ sure to let all the lefties on the board know that they’re not real liberals. Because real liberals, like him, value freedom from taxation above all else.
Whatever the libertarian party may claim about freedom, its platform is assuredly not identical to classical liberalism by any stretch.
Is it the worst thing about Liberal? No. But he’s a smug bastard, and here’s one more example.

That’s bullshit. It’s perfectly valid to express one’s opinions about another’s motivations. As long as you frame it as an opinion. Say, with the qualifier “Frankly, I don’t see . . .”

See, Excalibre would have a point if Lib had changed his name to “I’m Liberal And You’re Not”. Of course, Lib didn’t. He changed his name to what he feels identifies HIM. NOT to something that he feels identifies others, as Excalibre seems to think.
Frankly, IN MY OPINION, the “Lib isn’t Liberal” movement is based solely on insecurities, namely, yours, or Excalibre’s. You can’t, IN MY OPINION, accept the concept that someone that disagrees with you would identify as the same “type” of person that you would. You are, IN MY OPINION, so unshaky and unsteady in your views and beliefs that the challenge Lib’s very existence causes makes you actually question your beliefs; since you, IN MY OPINION, can’t handle that, you attack him.
That’s my opinion, which, according to you, is infallible… in my opinion.

I have some pretty serious problems with Lib: in general, I find him very quick to take on the martyr-mantle, and willing to distort what other people say in order to find an insult to pure little him. I find his love of obfuscatory languages off-putting; it appears to me most often to be a way to feel smarter than everyone else (don’t catch my obscure reference? Oh, you poor ignorant fools, not as educated as me!) I find him to be a huge hypocrite when it comes to religion: he’s consistently a terrible representative for a religion of peace and love.
But some of that is, no doubt, due to his medication; I just wish that he had someone he trusted who could tell him when he was going off the deep end and he’d believe them. And sometimes he’s a real joy, when he’s not being aggressive and self-pitying and arrogant and hypocritical.
He’s a hard one to predict.

You can say his politics are nutty. You can dislike his attitude. You can object to the change of his username. But it should be astonishingly clear to anyone who pays any attention to these boards that Liberal is not an idiot.
I don’t know what he’s like on other boards, but I have a feeling that wherever ideas are being discussed, Lib is likely to cause controversy. He seems to have an almost obsessive drive to point out things he thinks are dishonest and call people to account for them. He’d probably earn just as many “pittings” at a Republican message board, a Democratic message board, a Libertarian, a Christian, a Jewish, a Buddhist, or a Jain message board.
And Lib, I watch almost no television, but I got my Dad The West Wing second season on DVD, because he’s a big fan, and he’s been trying to get me to watch for ages. So we watch a few episodes whenever I go to his house, and I have to agree that it is an excellent show. I didn’t think I’d like it this much, but it is of superb quality, and I compliment you on your good taste.
Yeah, well your mom probably thinks you’re smart and good-looking too. Shows what she knows. In my opinion.

Since I’m apparently not entitled to my own opinion on Lib’s name, neither are you. Unless you can back this up, I’ll remember it as another example of your inanity. I made a conclusion about his motivation based on his behavior. You made one based, apparently, on a reading of your tea leaves. Once again, for the record, you, SPOOFE, are staggeringly imbecilic.
Can I just say how sick to fucking death I am of people (and actually, it’s often you, Daniel) bringing up Liberal’s medication? And you always seem to do it as some kind of explanation – nay, an excuse – for his habit of driveby shitting on certain threads.
I know you mean well, but seriously … I don’t give a flying rat’s ass if someone’s taking medication. There are likely hundreds, if not thousands, of Dopers who are on various forms of meds to help them with various forms of psychiatric disorders. And it doesn’t give us (yes, I’m one of 'em) a magical free pass to behave however we want to. He’s an adult. When he acts like an asshole, he should be called on it without you raising the PC-guilt spectre of “ooh, he’s just a poor sick individual who’s not in control of his mean-spiritedness.” Many of us may even be worse off than he is, health- or situation-wise, but are still responsible for our actions on the boards or in social situations.
So please lay off the “oh but he’s on his meds” line already. People with mental illness aren’t fragile creatures who need to be treated with kid gloves lest they blow up like a time bomb. Sure, some are, but even that doesn’t excuse craptastic behavior towards others. If we’re taking some prescription that turns us into vicious bitches, then it’s our job to talk to their doctor to find a better alternative or an additional med to counteract these side effects.
After 15,000+ posts and God only knows how many pit threads, I strongly doubt Liberal is too delicate to handle criticism. And he should be expected to face the same recriminations that everyone else would. As a champion of personal responsibility, he’d probably agree.
In any event, a guy – even one who’s often an utter frustrating asshat – who appreciates the national treasure that is John Spencer can’t be totally crazy.

Sorry you’re sick of it, but that’s not my problem. I bring it up not to make you feel better, nor to excuse him, but to help folks reeling from his bizarre attacks understand what’s going on. Your comments about treating him with kid gloves clearly show that you’ve not read my posts about him; I treat him with anything but kid gloves.
Nevertheless, while his medication is no excuse, it is an explanation, and my wish stands. Medications can lead to mood swings in people, and only the strangest Descartian mind/body splitters would deny this; I wish Lib had someone who could say, “Dude, your medication is acting up again–step away from the keyboard!” and he’d do it.
I’m going to keep bringing it up, so if you’re sick of it, you might want to stop reading posts from me with his name in them.
