Mods, would it be possible to ask Chimera to take his MRA crap to another thread? Everyone else is trying to have a discussion and he’s doing all he can to throw it off course.
This is still an ongoing issue/discussion. This isn’t specifically about Skald, Morgenstern, Chimera, or any particular poster. An issue was raised and we want to address it across the board. Please take personal or specific issues you have with other posters to another thread (I recommend using the Pit). This is a fine line to draw, so please use good judgment and restraint.
Men and women may live in the same world, and yet in a lot of ways we don’t. In my 64 years, not only have I never been sexually assaulted, but I’ve never even considered the possibility, never altered my course to reduce the likelihood that such a thing would happen to me.
Which makes sense, because if you’re a straight male, and you get through childhood and adolescence without being molested, and you stay out of jail, the likelihood that you’re going to be sexually assaulted is vanishingly small.
Now consider whether a woman can say anything like that.
Then consider whether women might react to salaciously intended references to sexual assault or abuse in a very different way than men might.
Finally, consider that there’s no one single possible set of gender-blind policies regarding such references. One can have policies that are theoretically gender-blind, that shrug their shoulders and take little offense at such references. Or one can have policies that actively police them.
Neither policy would be one policy for men and a different policy for women, but rather one policy across the board. But the policy that shrugs fails to take into account the different realities that men and women live in, while the other policy takes those differences somewhat into account.
We have come to the conclusion that in certain instances, clear notice in either the title, or the beginning of the OP, or both, will be required to give people a heads up if a thread is going in a direction that includes explicit sexual material. Something akin to ‘[WARNING: Contains explicit sexual material]’. This is derived from the rule about clear thread labeling, as well as not being a jerk.
If a thread is titled, ‘let’s talk about scat porn fetishes’, well that’s pretty clearly labeled already and we can surmise what the thread will be about and a warning probably isn’t necessary. If however, it’s called “Is this Chevy Malibu a reliable car?” and later in the body the real point of contention is all the scat porn filmed in the backseat, well, it’s reasonable to not want to be rickrolled into scat porn threads so a warning should be included, or better yet a more clear thread title.
This is a judgment call, and one off instances may not get as much notice. However, if there is a pattern of behavior or if something should be looked at, we encourage reports so that we may evaluate. Obviously a warning notice posted in every thread or title defeats the purpose of this guidance.
We have also reached out directly to Skald as some of his posts were the catalyst for this thread, however this guidance applies generally.
This is a big step and I really appreciate this. While I know what to expect in even clearly labeled threads, I’ll still report when humiliating and/or degrading women is involved and I hope others will do so, as well. That way the mods can begin to get a feel for what women may find inhospitable here.
Good policy, and I appreciate you listening. If I can make one very minor suggestion/tweak, if everything is labeled as a trigger warning it becomes meaningless. Crono‘s was fast enough today to catch two obvious trolling attempts to put trigger Warnings on normal threads. Could I suggest that that be added to the rule above? Only label the stuff that’s at least questionable. It’s such obvious trolling that I wouldn’t expect you to have imagined you needed it, but clearly It is needed.
