I have three gold Bug-Off trophies. 
I put one in my main living area, one in the upstairs room (a bathroom), and the third in the museum.
I didn’t know you could get a second Floor until I visited someone else’s town! I’ve just been filling up my room with as many gyroids as I can. It’s super annoying to be in there, now.
Yep…you can get a second floor, a basement, and three additional rooms (I’m not sure about the order). Other house upgrades expand the sizes of the rooms.
The gyroids have always freaked me out a bit for some reason…when I find one that isn’t so bad, I put it on the stage at the club.
If you get over 5,000,000 in your account, you get a beifcase full of money from the post office.
According to the animal crossing wiki, gyroids are loosely modeled around Terra Cotta funerary dolls from medieval Japan. So…assuming the implication is that you’re grave robbing every time one sprouts up in your village, you’re right to be creeped out. 
Funerary, huh? Kinda makes me wonder about the gyroids stationed in front of each house in the original Animal Crossing.
