Live Foaling Cam

You’d think a second-time dam would have more sense, wouldn’t you? Maybe she’s just a hot-minded mare in general. She does seem crazy about him – but a bit too crazy.

Maybe he’s one of those Big Dumb Guys – gorgeous but no brains to speak of.

That poor attendant keeps pushing his snout into position and he still doesn’t get it.

ETA – Can’t tell from this angle but it looks like she’s milking Virona and letting the foal lick the mild from her hand.

Huh – Virona seems calmer now that she’s getting milked, even by the human. And now Squirmy seems to be getting the idea, and she’s staying calm. Maybe she was frantic with pressure in her teats?

It’s almost like Squirmy is more interested in the human than her mom. Virona is an experienced mother, I think she doesn’t understand why Squirmy isn’t getting it. If he can get his colostrum, they can supplement the mare’s milk.

StG

StG is right - Squirmy is clueless.

They’re giving Virona some paste-like substance. I wonder if it’s a calming agent?

StG

I hope so. And now they’re trying Squirmy from the other side.

Is it unusual for foals to refuse to nurse?

Surly Chick - Usually only weak or sick foals don’t nurse. Getting the colostrum in the first few hours is essential. He’s almost too strong - like he doesn’t feel the need to nurse because hey - shiny!

StG

Clearly male… :stuck_out_tongue:

I wonder if he’s finally latched on, now that we can’t see? He does seem to be standing still.

Things do seem calmer.

Nope. I can see his head protruding from behind her rump.

He seems like he’s straining to poop… don’t they normally give a foal an enema to help pass their bowels the first time??

Ha! He just stepped closer and the attendant moved away – maybe he finished a good drink?

Damn. I have to go do late barn check/feed/water – will be gone for a good 45 minutes.

They’re taking the leadline off mom and leaving. I’m going to assume he got his colostrum meal and all is well.

Squirmy looks like he’s trying to poop!

He does look like he’s straining. I think the enema is if he doesn’t pass the meconium by himself. The first milk has laxative properties. She seems to be winding up again.

And here’s the handler again. she’s finished delivering the placenta.

StG

And a quick check on China shows nothing but poop.

Phew! Looks like he’s got the hang of it finally.

I don’t know, it still looks like he’s just chewing on her side.
